Pain in the past

Jason Avedissian

05Sep07
http://manlydaily.com.au/article/2007/09/05/6254_sports.html

THE pain of bombing out of last year's NRL finals is still simmering for the Sea Eagles, but there will be no repeat of that disaster in 2007.

Manly finished fifth at the end of the 2006 regular season.

But a tight first-up loss to Newcastle, followed by a hammering against the Dragons saw the Sea Eagles prematurely exit the finals.

Captain and half Matt Orford said the misery of Manly's poor showing last season will lift them ahead of Saturday night's semi-final against Souths at Brookvale Oval.

``It's a long off-season and you don't want to have any regrets,'' he said.

``I've been in a few finals series now and to bow out so early you always ask questions, what ifs and could I have done anything different. These opportunities don't come around too often.

``You dead-set cannot take them for granted and you've just got to do whatever it takes to win the match.

``I know the feeling (of losing) and I don't want to feel it again.''

Second-rower Anthony Watmough said this current squad which finished the regular season second to minor premiers Melbourne is stronger than last year's team.

``We had a really good team last year, not as good as this year,'' he said.

``We had a great opportunity last year and didn't make something of it. I don't think we stepped up enough and took on the challenge . . . that won't happen again this year.''

Orford believes the 2007 squad is also superior to last season.

``We've come a long way in being a more consistent footy team,'' he said.

``Des (coach Des Hasler) has done a fantastic job.

``There are some young guys who have also stepped up. We are playing more as a team this year.

``The addition of Jamie Lyon is a big one and our backrow has been enormous too.''
Manly prop Brent Kite says he is a remote hope of being fit for Saturday's semi-final.

``I haven't written it off yet,'' he said. ``I'm doing everything possible to play.''

Reprieve for injury-plagued Burns

Jason Avedissian
05Sep07
http://manlydaily.com.au/article/2007/09/05/6251_sports.html COWBOYS-BOUND Manly utility Travis Burns insists he still has a role to play in Manly's attempts to win this year's NRL premiership.

Burns has endured a forgettable second half to the season with illness and a back injury ensuring he has received little game time in recent months.
The rugged 23-year-old was yesterday named on a six-man Sea Eagles bench to face the Rabbitohs at Brookvale Oval on Saturday night.
And while the make-up of the squad is not set in stone, Burns is confident he can still leave his mark at the club before he heads north to Townsville.
``It's been hard, and it does hurt (not playing more), but hopefully it's all behind me,'' he said after training at Narrabeen yesterday.
``I can't control illness and injury. Just because I've signed with another club doesn't mean I don't have anything to offer here. I'm not retired - I'd be disappointed if I had nothing to offer.''
Second-rower Glenn Stewart said he ``felt sorry'' for Burns whose season turned upside down when he was rushed to Manly hospital in June with pneumonia.
He has since struggled with a back injury and been unable to force his way back into the Sea Eagles starting team.
``I'm sure he will look back and think it's been one of his worst years with injury,'' Stewart said.
``It comes part and parcel with the game. It can't get much worse for him.''
Manly coach Des Hasler named young prop Adam Cuthbertson in the front-row for the injured Brent Kite (abductor) with Jason King also gaining a start at the expense of Mark Bryant who moves back to the bench.
Chris Hicks (ankle) has also been named in the starting squad ahead of rookie Michael Bani. Luke Williamson returns at lock with Steve Menzies another on the bench.

Sea Eagles ready to soar

Wednesday, September 5, 2007
http://nrl.com.au/News/Latest/NewsArticle/tabid/76/NewsId/6924/Default.aspx

Manly second rower Anthony Watmough says the only thing that can stop the Sea Eagles claiming the 2007 NRL premiership is themselves.

The second-placed Sea Eagles enter the finals with high expectations after a consistent season where they beat all but one - North Queensland - of their top eight opponents.

Dally M second rower of the year Watmough says Manly finally has the experience, maturity and more importantly discipline in defence that is required to go all the way.

"The boys have talked about how you don't get too many opportunities to have an impact on the competition like we have this year and with the team we've got the only thing that can stop us is us," Watmough said.

"If we really put our mind to it (we can win it). We've just got to turn up every week and take it week by week and I'm sure come (grand final) we'll be there.

"I think defence is always a massive thing in finals footy. We've been defending well but just doing too much of it lately so if we can hold the ball then our defence will take care of itself.

"Semi-finals footy is not the most exciting footy but it's just the team that grinds it out usually wins the game and we'll look to do that but still try and play a little bit expansive when we can.

"(The eye) is always on the big prize, but we've just got to take it week by week."

Watmough, like coach Des Hasler, is unconcerned about the club's indifferent form coming into September.

The Sea Eagles have suffered two successive losses and a narrow victory in the run home, but alarmingly have conceded 60 points in those second halves while only scoring one try.

But Watmough says the players are only guilty of brief lapses in games, while the lack of pressure in having a top-two finish secured may have also led to complacency.

"It hasn't been that bad, it's only been 10-minute or 15-minute patches we've played bad in," he said.

"We know that we can't go away from what we've been doing all year.

"At the moment the little things are not sticking that were sticking at the start of the year. We just have to be persistent and try and do the simple things or one percenters and we know we can beat any team.

"We've been building up to the finals. We haven't been up to that level lately but the boys do know what's in store for them come Saturday night and it's a challenge that everyone is looking forward to."

The Sea Eagles commence their finals campaign on Saturday night against South Sydney at Brookvale. A victory would mean Manly progress directly to the grand final qualifier.

Don't give them to Souths fans. In actual fact, if he can, can he burn any spares outside of Souths Juniors before the match?

Is there a TV at said work?

Don't forget-If you can only find Souths fans to use your tickets, burn them.

I'd like to congratulate the dolt who thought saying I smelt of Beaver was in some way a good call.
