i would put menzies in the forwards as i dont think hes suitable for 5/8th in big games. However we dont really have a replacement for jamie lyon so i dont know who to put in that position. this geoff robson hasnt really sparked maybe we should try heath lestrange in 5/8th. i hear he has a descent kicking game also.

THE ‘glory bound’ rounds continue to heat up with another sensational Friday night blockbuster at Brookvale Oval.

The front-running Sea Eagles showed they can be vulnerable after copping a hiding at the hands of the Roosters last weekend, which was music to the ears of Panthers’ fans as they gear up for this crucial encounter.

Sure, the Penrith record at Brookie is woeful, but with so much at stake you can be sure they’ll be pumped up for this clash.

The men from Sydney’s west sit in seventh spot on the ladder at this point in time but they are fully aware a loss could drop them as far as 10th.

With rounds running out, it’s not the place you want to be and as such the motivation couldn’t be greater.

Manly, still sitting comfortably in top place despite the last-start loss, welcome back Luke Williamson and Glenn Stewart to their side, which sees Steve Menzies remain a stop-gap five-eighth and relegates Jeff Robson and Jack Afamasaga to an extended bench.

Anthony Watmough remains sidelined, with Glenn Hall starting in the second row.

For the Panthers, exciting rookie Lachlan Coote is out, which brings Maurice Blair into the centres and shifts Brad Tighe to the wing.

Frank Pritchard also returns from injury in the back row, pushing Joseph Paulo to the pine.

Once again Luke Rooney has been named as an 18th man.

Watch out Sea Eagles: The Panthers believe the manly edge defenders are vulnerable and will be looking to exploit them.

Adam Cuthbertson has an attacking, dominant game and as such targeting him to defend will work two-fold.

Firstly, by making him do extra defensive work, his tank will be emptied quicker and his danger in attack lessened; secondly he misses around 15 per cent of his tackles as well so a potential line break comes almost once in every five runs.

Watch out Panthers: The Sea Eagles are bringing the second-phase ‘heat’ to this match.

With 236 offloads so far this season Manly lead the way in second-phase football, well ahead of the Panthers who with just 162 offloads are ranked 14th in the NRL.

The likes of Steve Menzies (33 offloads), Adam Cuthbertson (26) and Glenn Stewart (22) have all been prolific providers this year and they’ll look for that to continue as they try to disrupt the defensive line of the Panthers.

Where it will be won: Desire.

Just how bad do these teams want it?

That’s what will decide this big match.

For Manly, it’s possible they could slip into a bit of a cruise mode.

They are already safely into the finals and sometimes players subconsciously start saving themselves for the bigger games to come.

With a match-up against the Storm coming seven days after this one, the minds might already be moving forward.

But if there is a real desire inside to finish on top of the pile in the regular season rounds they need to stay focussed on the job at hand and beat the Panthers before they face the Storm.

For the Panthers, desire has always been the one major problem at the club.

It has waned at crucial times in recent seasons and lethargy has reigned supreme.

They have appeared to have turned the corner but this game will be the real test of just how much they want to compete with, and beat, the top sides.

The two teams have split the past eight clashes four apiece but the Penrith record at Brookvale is a concern for Panthers fans. Penrith have only won eight of 33 matches at Brookvale; their last win there came in 2003.

Conclusion: The Brookvale hoodoo for the Panthers is a big one to overcome – particularly as the home side will not be impressed with their side’s performance last week.

Expect the Panthers to compete for most of this contest but be beaten by a touch of class here or there, most likely from Brett Stewart who still has an uncanny knack to find the try line on home turf. One thing is for sure, this is a game worth getting to.

Positive Panthers big on raw power

CONFIDENT Panthers coach Matt Elliott believes a positive brand of football is the only way his team can upset NRL frontrunners Manly at Brookvale Oval tomorrow night.
A full-strength Panthers side, bolstered by the return of devastating second-rower Frank Pritchard are quietly confident of knocking off the Sea Eagles on their own turf.
Manly will take the park in a prickly mood after a disappointing last-start defeat against the Roosters.
But Elliott has warned any suggestion his team will simply provide Manly with the chance to resurrect their form is off the mark. "Whatever they throw at us on or off the field we won't be intimidated," the Panthers boss said yesterday.
"We named a strong side this week and we'll be going there confident.
"We know what we can do and won't be going to Manly to try and grind out a win.
"If we play positive football we can take control of the match and with Franky coming back we'll be very strong."
The former St George utility said Manly's strength is their ability to play 80 minutes.
"We will be playing a fit, mobile and well-coached team," Elliott said.
"To continue to play well and to compete against that we have had to focus on improving certain areas and trying different things.
"Positive footy is the key."
In-form Panthers winger Michael Gordon said he expects a hostile reception from Manly fans.
"The crowds are wild at Brookvale and not friendly to visiting teams," he said.
"All of us are pumped up for the match."
Apart from gun rookie Lachlan Coote who is out with a knee injury.
In the Manly camp, second-rower Anthony Watmough will also miss out tomorrow night as he recovers from minor knee surgery this week.
The hard-running forward is expected to be back to face premiers Melbourne at Brookvale on Friday week.
Grandstand tickets for that game have already sold out with supporters urged to pre-purchase through Ticketek to ensure their place at Brookvale Oval for the grand final replay.

JEFF Robson and Phil Moorwood are set to be omitted from the Manly bench. Robson's presence on a six-man bench is mainly as a standby for halfback and captain Matt Orford (groin). Penrith second rower Frank Prichard (shoulder/virus) has trained well this week and should play. Frank Puletua is likely to drop off. Penrith have not won at Brookvale Oval since 2003. The Sea Eagles have won 20 of their last 23 home games. In all the games between these clubs at Brookvale, the Sea Eagles have won 35 and the Panthers just eight.
