Mark Waugh's medium pace

Just watching some old World Series Cricket matches in the early 90s, I notice Mark Waugh used to bowl medium pace, and looked alright.

I then saw another match in 94/95 where he bowled similar style, but looked a bit slower.

I know later on he changed to off spin, but when was the last time he bowled medium pace?

He actually opened the bowling for Australia one day at the SCG when we had McDermott (I think) and a team full of spinners.

Pretty short spell, it was a old SCG spinners wicket.

Both Steve and Mark were decent bowlers - Steve was selected for Australia initially on the back of his bowling. I think a lower back injury similar to the one Steve suffered changed his style.

Also opened the bowling in a test after either McDermott or Hughes were injured

Steve was a genuinely very good medium pacer - I think he opened the bolwing in a test once or twice...

Mark was rubbish in comparison IMO - less control, and fewer variations. Better as a spinner probably

Mark before he hurt his back could be quite sharp, i remember on the 93 tour to England he opened the bowling with Merv. IIRC he took 4 for 80. I'm pretty sure he was bowling his offies in the 96 WC.

M Waugh was more of a quick bowler than Steve who was only ever a medium pacer.

As much as I love Junior and watching his bowling, his off spinners weren't very good.

Mark Waugh was still bowling medium pace in 93/94, so I guess he must've changed during 1994

JJ is right, Steve was the better medium-pacer. There wasn't much between them for pace, they were probably both around 130kph in their primes, but Mark was primarily a part timer while Steve was a genuine ODI all-rounder. Steve was just a better player while Mark looked the part without delivering, both bat and ball.

I used to be able to mimick Mark Waugh's medium pace action flawlessly. Steve Waugh was a marvellous medium pacer and proved himself in both one day and test cricket as a key clutch bowler. The day he stopped bowling was the day he started to become overrated as a cricketer IMO.

I think Steve has 197 ODI wickets, he was a pretty good one day bowler, and at one stage was second for Australia as all time wicket taker.

With test matches I dont think he took that many wickets, he was a handy bowler still, what kept him in the side early in his career before he got back to back tons in England in 89.

I think last time he bowled was in the 2002/03 Ashes series, I think he got frustrated when Vaughan got some runs and McGrath and Lee broke down, so Waugh got the ball and bowled a good one.

M Waugh actually made it into NSW country as an opening bowler rather than a batsmen as a youngster.

2ns test at lords in 93 when mcdermott went down with appendicitis

he also took 5/24 against the west indies with his medium pace in a memorable come-from-behind win at the mcg in a one dayer(dec 15 1992 i think)

and yes, i know all that off the top of my head ( will try to get a life one of these days)

mark was much faster, but did very little with the ball. steve had the ball bouncing, seaming and swinging in every bloody direction, and could control it very well.

Marks off spin rarely turned at all, it was just all round crap.

Mark was the better batsmen, only when he was concentrating 100%. his natural instincts scored 85% of his runs, the other 15% was through concentration

Steve was the other way round.

Mark had the uncanny ability of bouncing blokes out, coming on just a little quicker than they anticipated. He was a bowler who's best variety was a change up in pace. Steve was probably opposite, a guy who could nag you out and then deceive you with a slower variation. Both valuable bowlers through the late 80s early 90s for Australia.
