Marque Games

What games could the NRL promote as marque games - or even events if you like - throughout the season, encouraging people to go the game or watch it on TV, such as the dragons Vs roosters ANZAC day clash?

A few spring to mind:

  • Brisbane Vs Cowboys (all queensland game, could be held around the same time as a queensland holiday eg. queensland's labour day, royal queensland show)
  • Penrith Vs Parra ('battle of the west')
  • There's alot of history in a Souths Vs Roosters game but the problem is Souths aren't really that competitive.
  • Heritage matches could also be incorporated. (Possibly a Steelers Vs ? heritage match?)
What other games could we have between clubs with an intense rivalry or are related to each other in some way, be it geographically or whatever?

The NRL could then organise to have these games become annual fixtures in the season, prehaps holding them on public holidays such as the ANZAC day game. It could also be an added incentive to hype up a Monday Night Football game on a long weekend.

Saints and Roosters came up with the concept, in an NRL sense, a few years ago and have been doing it.

Don't know what you could call it but a 10 year anniversary match of the grand final of ten years ago.

If you get what i mean, so this year it would have been Manly vs Dogs. Next year it would be Manly vs Dragons etc.

In 2007 do a double header with Knights vs Manly and Broncos vs Sharks.

Parra v Manly, Parra v Canterbury should always be matches with historical rivalries.

Stuff like this is a good idea but individual clubs put in so many requests for the draw as it is anyway, they would have to learn to abide by NRL rulings and all stop whinging and play ball for it to be planned well and work.

Maybe we could follow an AFL idea and have contest between teams play for a trophy of some sort. WOuldn't have to be every side.

But say Parra vs Dogs play for a trophy. Dunno what you would call it, but it would help to promote the game a bit, and add a little more rivalry to the contest.

Some teams already play for a trophy. The Warriors play Melbourne for the Mick Moore Memorial Trophy, and there's another one (the Bartercard trophy??) for clashes between the Warriors and the Broncos.

They don't really add anything to the games though, probably 90% of people watching would have no idea that there was a trophy on the line. If there was more promotion around the idea then I reckon it would be a goer.

There lies one of the biggest problems with rugby league. Virtual no promotion of games.

But in this city you can't help but be bombared on the radio and on the TV with the next Swans "Blockbuster" game.

I would prefer to see Rugby league allocate some more money to doing this themselves.

Yeah, the AFL do a good job of promoting games as events as it were. But then again that's because all that AFL has is a domestic comp.

At least this will give the Sharks a chance to win something

Manly and Parra could bring in the Fitzgerald-Peters Cup.

Going a b it into the wrestling side a Melbourne v Parramatta game could have a added stipluation that the loser moves to Iceland

2007 Is a Big Year, as it's the 100 year anniversary so this is what I would do in the first round to celebrate.

First Grade Double Header:
Souths vs Roosters
Newcastle vs Canterbury

Reserve Grade:
Newtown vs Norths

Jersey Flegg:
Balmain vs Wests

Why the Bulldogs? Because there is 3 teams who were there in 1908 still playing in the top grade and the next team to be established that still exists is the Bulldogs.

you are right about it being the 100th anniversery in 2007, but the NRL will not celebrate anything till 2008.
Just like with origin...last yr was the 25th yr!

Woah...why didn't anyone in the media notice that?

I suppose it would be better in 2008 anyway, since in 2007 the NRL are just going to hype up the GC and give them all the attention.
