Wests Tigers are pleased to announce the re-signing of dynamic centre Esan Marsters for the coming two seasons. The new deal will see Marsters remain at Wests Tigers until at least the end of the 2020 NRL season. Since making his debut in Round 13, 2017, the 21 year old has taken to the field 19 times for Wests Tigers.

Marsters said that he was thrilled to be extending his stay at Wests Tigers.

“It was definitely an easy choice for me to stay at Wests Tigers,” said Marsters. “They gave me a chance to play first-grade here and I really want to pay them back by playing some good footy.

"I just enjoy being around this club, all the boys are really tight and I’ve got some of my best mates here.

"We’re all pretty close on the field and it’s really reflecting on the field.

“In saying that, I really want to play for Ivan as well. He’s stuck by me this entire time so I really want to play some good footy for him and just finish the year on a good note,” he said.

“I think all the boys are really close this year and do things for each other.

"We’re showing on the field what we can do and I’m really happy to be a part of it.

"We definitely want to keep improving and working hard as a team and that’s the most important thing.”

Wests Tigers Head Coach Ivan Cleary said that he looked forward to continuing to work with Marsters over the coming seasons.

“Esan is developing into an impressive player and I look forward to working with him on the next part of his career with Wests Tigers,” said Cleary.

“In a short period of time he’s shown himself to be a very valuable member of our team and we look forward to seeing him develop further over the coming two seasons."

Wests Tigers CEO Justin Pascoe congratulated Marsters on his contract extension.

“Esan is a natural Rugby League player and we are thrilled that the club can continue to work with him to reach his full potential,” said Pascoe. “He has a bright future and we’re committed to continuing to develop him both on and off the field as we build a destination club where players and staff want to be.”

That’s right.

TIGERS

Benji Marshall, JJ Felise, Tim Grant, Kevin Naiqama, Sauaso Sue, Malakai Watene-Zelezniak, Bayley Sironen, Pita Godinet

Coach: Ivan Cleary (until 2020)

New deal: Corey Thompson (until 2019), Esan Marsters (until 2020)

Leaving: Taane Milne (Released)

I think Benji will be offered, but I think Kevvy & MWZ are warranted as well. If they are not looking at Grant in the top 20, then I think he will be gone?

Kev has to be offered an extension, Ivan has done wonders with him. MWZ is very solid without being explosive and worth keeping on.

I'd be tempted to let Sue move on, he hasn't kicked on the way I thought he would have.

Benji, well we can leave that until later on in the year.

I love that all we have left to sign are depth signings.

I hate that last year they were all first grade regulars.

Good pick up, one of the most underrated players in the comp.

Keep a hold of Kev & MWZ, and look to bring in a couple more for next year and we're sweet. I can't see Benji going anywhere, he hasn't looked this happy on a RL field since Sheens coached us.

Heard they are chasing some English centre to replace the loss of Suki and Milne

Geez it’s great & inconceivable that this once dysfunctional rabble have got their house in such order that the players not signed for next season r all disposable.Top of the pecking order re who to re-sign followed by daylight is the prodigal son if he’s physically up to it & only for 1yr(b4 the Cleary’s reunite).

Additionally we have a very strong squad with depth & money to spend on recruiting quality players who can enhance our roster.

Good stuff, glad to see Ivan and the tigers doing well after a painful year last year for them.

I’d be sad to see Sue go but I think that’s the way it’s heading. His not a bad player, I can see someone like Parra throwing big money at him

I’d hold onto Kev for another year but feel we need to try and buy a genuine first grade center. The English kid we’re after sounds good.

MWZ, I don’t know I’m getting more off this guy every week. Really want Fonua to come in.

I'd love to see Fonua come in but he looks slow. He can score a try though and his hit-ups are I reckon the best in the game.

A bit disappointing to hear he wants to switch to RU some day...

'Money' Marsters eyes trip to Denver - and the All Blacks

Esan Marsters knocked back interest from Cronulla and premiers Melbourne to re-commit to the Wests Tigers – now the youngster hopes to sneak into the New Zealand team for the Denver Test.
And the youngster who has been nicknamed ''Money Marsters'' by a few of his cheeky Tigers teammates told Fairfax Media his long-term dream was to represent the All Blacks, even though he's never played rugby at the elite level.

Marsters has been ultra-impressive for the Tigers at right centre and this week was rewarded with a two-year extension, which will keep him at the joint venture until the end of 2020.

The 21-year-old will look to continue his blistering form against Newcastle on Saturday in Tamworth, the NSW country town he thought was ''somewhere near the Central Coast''.

Marsters popped up on the radar of the Storm who wanted a back-up plan for Felise Kaufusi if he exited the club at the end of the season, while the Sharks were tempted again after they expressed interest the first time around.

New Zealand officials will also keep an eye on Marsters as they look to pick a team for the mid-year Test against England in the US.

Brad Takairangi was the right centre in the World Cup, but been in and out of a struggling Parramatta team.

"I definitely want to make that side – I want to keep playing good footy and I might be a chance,'' Marsters said on Thursday.

"If the Tigers keep winning, it only improves my chances."

Kiwi and Tigers teammate Elijah Taylor said Marsters and Benji Marshall deserved to be considered for the US Test.

"Their combination has been very dangerous [on the right], Esan has good feet, a great offload, he's fast and really strong,'' Taylor said.

"Even Benji, with the way he's been playing, deserves to put on the black jumper again."

Marsters said the childhood dream growing up in Auckland was to play for the All Blacks, and he was fair dinkum about eventually making the switch.

"I never played rugby at the elite level, but I really want to test it out, and hopefully I get a shot over there and see what happens. I'll go with the flow,'' Marsters said.

"As a kid I always watched the All Blacks, and when you see how they travel and win a lot, you want to be a part of that legacy.

"I definitely want to make the move later in my career, but once I'm established in the NRL.

"It was an easy choice to stay at the Tigers. I'm getting to play my own footy, and Ivan [Cleary] has told me to play my own footy, work hard on defence, run hard, be a tough player and everything else will fall into place."

Marsters is averaging more than 130 metres a game and forever busting tackles and making offloads. He is also capable of playing in the back row, hence Melbourne's interest, but prefers the centres.
Meanwhile, Taylor confirmed his dodgy hamstring survived a final hit-out on Thursday and he would definitely return against the Knights on Saturday.

Taylor broke down in the round-two win against Melbourne and watched his teammates go on to win three of their next four matches.

Y am I not surprised that the vultures melb & cron were interested in him.I suppose we haven’t gifted them players in particular the Mexican cheats enough decent backs(korobeite & JAC) in recent times !

Geez it’s a relief to have a shrewd coach & an admin thats turned the corner re recruitment & retention.
