Dragons confirm McGregor's position under review

With St George Illawarra’s finals chances slipping away, the future of coach Paul McGregor will again be discussed at a meeting of the Dragons board next week.

St George Illawarra CEO Ryan Webb confirmed McGregor’s position was on the agenda for the board’s regular monthly meeting next Tuesday.

After holding an emergency meeting in the wake of the round four loss to Canterbury to consider McGregor’s fate, the board unanimously backed him to continue in the role and put measures in place aimed at helping to improve the team’s performance.

The Dragons won four of their next six matches and suffered narrow losses to last year’s grand finalists Sydney Roosters and Canberra.

However, they have lost their past three matches to Cronulla, South Sydney and the Roosters to now sit six points behind the eighth-placed Sharks with seven rounds remaining before the finals.

McGregor is contracted until the end of next season but Webb said he was aware that his position would be reviewed once the Dragons fell from finals contention.

“It is definitely a discussion that needs to be had and everyone has been pretty open about that at our end,” Webb said.

“We had that meeting after round four and put in some areas of support. The team showed some good form for a few weeks but we still fell short of finals so you can’t just sit there, you have got to talk about things.”

Webb was unable to give any indication of whether the board would continue to support McGregor or look to head in a different direction for next season.

He said McGregor was aware that his future would be discussed by the board.

“I will chat to Paul during the week and see what he is thinking and where he is at,” Webb said.

“It is a normal board meeting on Tuesday and as far as we are concerned Paul is contracted until the end of next year but it is something we will talk about.”

If McGregor’s services were terminated after this weekend’s match against Parramatta, it is expected that assistant coach Dean Young would take charge for the remainder of the season.

Fellow assistant Shane Flanagan is precluded from taking on a head coaching position until 2022 under the terms of a suspension imposed by the NRL for breaching a previous coaching ban while at Cronulla.

Meanwhile, rookie five-eighth Tristan Sailor may start in the No.6 jersey against the Eels following the suspension of lock Jackson Ford on a tripping charge.

Sailor played 50 minutes from the interchange bench in last Thursday night’s 32-24 loss to the Roosters as his only other previous appearance since the season resumed on May 28 was a brief stint against the Rabbitohs and the Dragons coaching staff wanted to preserve his energy.

However, after gaining some valuable match fitness he is likely to play the full game in a move that would allow Ben Hunt to start at hooker and Cameron McInnes to play lock in place of Ford.

The Dragons will again be without Australian prop Paul Vaughan due to a COVID-19 breach on the eve of the Roosters clash which required him to undergo a 14-day isolation period.

New recruit Kaide Ellis replaced Vaughan but the former Penrith prop’s involvement was limited as he hadn’t played since March.

If only Mary practised what he/she sang- he was never a friend or mentor to the younger players. He was hard on them and wouldn't give them a chance but inexplicably was forgiving of the mediocrity of senior players and continued to select them. Result- Frizzell gone, Leilua gone, Robson gone, Garrick gone, Saab going- many others rumoured to want out. Meanwhile no one of quality wants to come to the Dragons

Some promising form after the previous board meeting in June kept McGregor in the good graces, the Dragons have fallen in their past three games despite either leading or level in all of them.

McGregor has been stripped of some of his responsibility, with a selection committee put in place with the assistant coaches.

The Daily Telegraph reported on Monday night that the club were set to part ways with the coach next week, with CEO Ryan Webb confirming the meeting would involve McGregor's future.

“Paul knows we will be discussing it at board level now that we’re out of contention for the finals," he said.

Speaking on NRL 360, Phil Rothfield said that there is a split at board level over the coach's future.

“There’s a board meeting next Tuesday night. The directors are split – the Wollongong directors are supporting Mary, those at Kogarah aren’t," he said.

"He’s won 8 of his last 31 games. Ben Hunt started at halfback, went to the bench for a month, then went to hooker, then went to five-eighth. There’s no continuity there.

"It’s 2020 – tell me one NRL coach that doesn’t have final say over the team he puts on the park.

"The Parramatta game will be his last game."

McGregor has been in charge of the Red V since 2014, with the side winning just one finals game during his tenure.

It is expected that Dean Young will take over as interim coach, but the Dragons are preparing to go to the NRL and ask for Shane Flanagan's head coaching ban to be uplifted.

The likes of Jason Ryles, Craig Fitzgibbon, Shaun Wane and Geoff Toovey have also been spoken about as potential Dragons coaches.

Dragons may again hold fire on Paul McGregor as 'far cheaper pay-out' looms

The Dragons might be tempted to hang on to battling coach Paul McGregor until the end of the season to secure a "far cheaper pay-out", Nine NRL reporter Danny Weidler says.

McGregor could coach his final game for St George Illawarra against the Eels on Friday, according to some reports, with a board meeting next week to decide his fate. The Mole reported on Tuesday that McGregor's manager had been summoned to meet with the club this week.

Yet Weidler said that the Dragons, all but out of finals contention with seven games remaining, had a strong financial incentive finish the season with McGregor. The coach survived a potential axing in June, amid reports that a $1 million severance would be required and the club could not afford such a pay-out.

Either way, McGregor is extremely unlikely to see out the final year of his contract as Dragons coach next season.

"I don't think he'll be the coach there next year ... but whether they get rid of him now, it doesn't make financial sense for the club in a lot of ways because if he can last until November, there's a far cheaper pay-out for the Dragons and we know we're in a difficult financial time," Weidler said on 100% Footy.

"I guess the only reason for him to go early would be planning. That would be the only reason.

"But I don't think he'll be coach next year. Whether his exit is as early as this week, that's been talked about.

"I know there's a board meeting next Tuesday and obviously Mary's future will be on the agenda, as it has been previously. It makes more sense to say goodbye to him in November."

The Dragons face a headache over the coaching position for next season.

Assistant coach Shane Flanagan, the Cronulla premiership winner, is their preferred option but still barred from a head coaching role in 2021. Another leading option, former Dragons forward Craig Fitzgibbon, has confirmed that he will see out his commitment as a Sydney Roosters assistant.

Current Dragons assistant Dean Young, the 2010 premiership hero, may take on a season-long caretaker role.

"I'd like to see Shane Flanagan back coaching a first grade side but I don't think he's going to get a reduction in his penalty. There doesn't seem to be a strong appetite [among NRL officials] for that to happen," Weidler said.

"Shane's future might depend a bit on what Paul McGregor does. If he's gone, he (Flanagan) went there to be with McGregor.

"It might mean Flanagan has to go somewhere else; maybe like a Bulldogs, for instance, who have got a new coach (Trent Barrett)."

The Dragons may opt to delay under-fire coach Paul McGregor’s sacking until the end of the season for financial reasons and it could affect Shane Flanagan’s future at the club.

Phil Rothfield reported the Dragons Round 14 clash with the Eels will be Mcgregor’s last, but Danny Weidler believes waiting until the end of the season makes more financial sense.

The club legend has won 69 and lost 81 of his 150 NRL games as head coach of the Dragons for a win percentage of 46.0.


However McGregor’s imminent departure could have repercussions for assistant Shane Flanagan’s future at the club.

Flanagan came to the club to join forces with McGregor and his head coaching ban doesn’t expire until 2022.

Whether he wants to stay on under an incoming coach on a multi-year deal is up in the air, according to Weidler.
