Bird-brain plan to stop Burgess boys

Titans co-captain Greg Bird believes his side has to use brains rather than sheer brawn if they hope to win the middle of the ruck against the Burgess boys and a South Sydney forward pack he says are the benchmark of the competition.

With a game against a resurgent Rabbitohs outfit followed by a local derby against the Broncos next Friday night, the next fortnight presents the perfect opportunity for the Titans to quieten those detractors who question their current lofty position on the table with an even bigger crowd expected than which turned out for the Broncos game in Round 5.

Sam, George and Luke Burgess have all been named in the Rabbitohs squad for Saturday night at Cbus Super Stadium and stopping the forward momentum of Sam and George in particular shapes as the Titans' greatest challenge.

Only once this year has either Sam or George been kept to under 100 metres in a game and in 10 of 15 occasions they have each run for more than 150 metres, coming up with an astonishing 417 metres between them in their last outing against the Broncos.

While teams such as the Sea Eagles and Wests Tigers have successfully employed a tactic of matching fire with fire against South Sydney, Bird believes it will be in the Titans' best interests to approach the challenge from a more thoughtful angle.

"You can't sell those big guys short," Bird said. "You can't just say, 'Get under their skin and we'll win.' They'll come back at us times 10 because they're big and aggressive blokes. It's not just going to be a bash-up in the middle, there will probably be a lot of strategy that we'll discuss later.

"I think [the mobility of our forward pack] is one of our strengths and that's something we're probably going to focus on a little bit, our mobility and their size.

"We know where they're going to be coming. They're going to be coming down the middle, they're going to be coming aggressive and we've got to hold our own in defence, which I think we've been quite strong at the last few rounds.

"We're going to have to do a lot of work with them, tiring them out, twisting them up and throwing options at their defence rather than just carting it up into them."

Sam scored a double and George got a try of his own when the Rabbitohs disposed of the Titans 36-6 in their last outing at Robina in 2013, a dominant performance that has not been forgotten north of the border, Bird saying that they "embarrassed" them on their home turf.

"It's exciting, you want to test yourself against the best and they're certainly the best," was Bird's summation of the South Sydney forward pack. "They probably started [the season] a little bit slow but they're a force, especially with 'GI' (fullback Greg Inglis) at the back. As soon as those big guys get on a roll he comes flying through the middle and it doesn't get any easier.

"We did play a really good strong game against [the Tigers] but it's really going to be no comparison to coming up against the Burgess boys. They're internationals and have done it for a couple of years now and they're only getting better every game.

"Sam Burgess is probably playing the best footy of his life. He's made a point that he's come to play this year before he takes off to England and he's going to be a force this weekend."

As for stopping 194-centimetre and 120-kilogram George, the rugged Titans back-rower said it was a matter of executing their defence as they would for any other player... only better.

"Get up in front of him and get in his face," Bird said of how to limit George's impact. "You want to slow him down before he gets a head of speed up because when he gets those legs pumping he's pretty hard to bring down.

"Staying tight and getting numbers in the tackle, just all the things we do with the smaller guys but you've just got to be better at it with George and Sam because they're not just big, they can step and they've got speed, so it's going to be a mission."

Titans hooker Beau Falloon spent plenty of time playing alongside George in the NSW Cup with North Sydney when he first arrived from England in 2011 and despite his initial lack of mobility, had no doubt he would develop into a dominant force.

"He used to do what he's doing now in NSW Cup at North Sydney so I always knew he was going to be a good player," Falloon said.

"He was only really young, he was only 20 years old and playing a lot of 20s and NSW Cup just earning his stripes, but he's got all the experience behind him now and he's taken his opportunity and making the most of it.

"George has proved to be a world-class player, he plays for his country and he's one of [Souths'] big-game players and if you don't commit to tackling him 100 per cent you're going to find yourself on your backside."

Talk about brotherhood – the Rabbitohs are inseparable! While the rep weekend afforded all but five of the squad the chance to recover from what has been a bruising start to 2014, in a sign of just how close the class of 2014 has become, forward Jason Clark admitted to missing his Rabbitohs teammates during the short period of down-time.
With the modern demands of professional rugby league resulting in the team spending most of their waking moments together, in Clark’s view, the Rabbitohs brotherhood is only strengthening as a result.
“It sounds strange, but even after a couple of days, you start to miss the boys,” laughed Clark.
“The team is just another part of your family, so when you’re away from it – even for a bit – you start to miss the joking around the change rooms and all the stick that generally flies around a footy team.
“We call each other brothers, and we definitely feel as though we are, both on and off the field. To have that kind of connection is special and that’s really something that we hold onto.
"We spend a lot of time together outside of footy as well, so it's only natural that you feel a bit close."
The short break had a number of other positive effects for Clark and his teammates – chief of which was the opportunity to spend time with their young families.
“It’s always good to get a bit of a break for a few reasons,” admitted Clark.
“Yeah, it’s an opportunity for us to get the body right, but more than anything it gives us time to re-group and spend time with our families.
“Our wives and kids do so much for us, supporting us in every way they can, so we love to have a couple of extra days to re-connect. It works wonders for you.”

With the batteries now recharged, Souths’ focus now shifts to Saturday night’s clash with the Gold Coast Titans, for what will be the Rabbitohs’ second Queensland game in three weeks. After defeating the Broncos in thrilling fashion in round eight at Suncorp Stadium on ANZAC Day, Clark is confident of the position his side has put themselves in moving forward.
“There’s no better way for us to come into a week off than from a win,” said Clark.
“Getting a win like that up in Brisbane says a lot about us as a team and it’s given us plenty to work on as well.
“It was a pretty physical game – going right down to the end there – so there were plenty of bumps and bruises, but that break during the rep weekend will have done a world of good. Everyone will be feeling pretty fresh.”
The Titans currently sit in equal first position on the NRL ladder (third on for and against) with 12 competition points. Clark is certain that his team will be better for the test.
“It’s certainly going to be a good test for us,” said Clark.
“The Titans are playing some good footy – (former Rabbitoh and Souths Junior) Beau Falloon is playing well there in the nine and big Dave (Taylor) is causing plenty of damage, so we’re looking forward to the challenge. They’re going to be fired up and ready to go.
“They’ll want the win, but we’ve just got to want it more. We’ve got to be hungry and that’s what it comes down to. That showed in Brisbane and we want to show it again.”

Gold Coast Prop Ryan James Says The Titans Will Again Bait The Burgess Brothers To Beat Bunnies

TODD BALYM
THE COURIER-MAIL
MAY 07, 2014

Gold Coast prop Ryan James has revealed the Titans’ plan to bait South Sydney’s Burgess brothers after successfully getting under their skin this year.

The Titans have studied Round 3 footage of the Wests Tigers’ 25-16 upset win over Souths, noting how Sam Burgess lost his cool after a heavy tackle on younger brother George.

The video review highlighted the Tigers’ forward leaders they need to combat and laid out a blueprint for getting inside the heads of the Bunnies.

Deliberately baiting the Burgesses might be considered a death-wish, but it is the confrontational style of football the hard-headed Titans love.

James said the Titans would go into Saturday’s clash at Cbus Super Stadium prepared to get in the faces of South Sydney and flex their own premiership muscle in a game that could really boost their top four credentials.

“We’ve watched that (Round 3) footage a couple of times leading up to the Tigers game so we know it worked both ways for us, because both those games were coming up,” James told The Courier-Mail.

“The Burgess brothers are still excellent players but if you can get under their skin, they can turn a little bit.

“Souths just bully their way through the middle and let Greg Inglis do the pretty stuff out the back and it has worked for them.

“If they stick to it, they’re a great side.

“We’re just going to hopefully mash their game plan up a little bit and do what we do best.”

Gold Coast’s aggressive style rattled the cage of Sonny Bill Williams and the Sydney Roosters last year, with skipper Greg Bird and James clearly frustrating the Kiwi star to the point it was believed he offered to settle the score after the game.

James backed his forward pack to adopt an aggressive approach in front of 20,000 fans this week.

“We have such great players in the forward pack. I’m sure we’ve got the experience there that can hold their forward pack,” James said of the Round 9 clash.

James was on hand on Tuesday to launch the Graduates of League program, an initiative between the Titans, NRL and Griffith University to encourage more players toward study.

The Titans lead the NRL with 24 players enrolled in university study. James is one of the early adopters who is two subjects from completing his Bachelor of Business degree.

He said the recent career-ending injuries to Simon Dwyer and Alex McKinnon, his roommate on NSW Country Origin duties last year, highlighted the need for players to make university a priority during their playing days.

“The NRL have looked after (McKinnon) very well but he was also a smart character,’’ he said.

“I got the pleasure of rooming with him in the Country team last year and he was well into his studies.

“Footy doesn’t work out for everyone and you need further education to get further in life.’’

Dylan Walker has helped the Rabbitohs to a 40-18 victory over the competition leading Titans on the Gold Coast tonight (Saturday) – the Souths Junior grabbing four tries in front of 19,107 fans to score Souths fifth win of the season.

Walker was in scintillating form from the get-go with elusive running resulting in the first try of the game before proceeding to trouble the Titans for the remaining 80. Another Souths Junior in the form of Alex Johnston also grabbed a double.
But it wasn’t just the Rabbitohs’ attack that had the Gold Coast fighting to breathe. Another mammoth defensive effort saw the red and greens miss just six tackles – reminiscent of this year’s much talked about defensive effort against the Panthers.
With their first touch of the ball, Dylan Walker crabbed across field, creating an over-lap for Kirisome Auva’a who raced through and passed back on the inside to Walker to cruise over and score inside the first two minutes. Adam Reynolds added the extras right next to the sticks to make it six points to nil.
It became a double-punch from the red and green centres just three minutes later when Auva’a inched his way over the try-line himself – the video referee awarding the four-pointer after a brief look for a double-movement. Reynolds missed the conversion leaving the score at 10-0.
Another strong set from the kick-off saw the Rabbitohs back in attacking position, and it was all te red and green centres again, with Dylan Walker darting down the short-side just five metres in from touch and powering over to score out wide. Reynolds used the upright to bounce the ball back between the sticks to make it 16-0 after just ten minutes.
Souths seemed to being making metres and breaks effortlessly – in the 14th minute, a Greg Inglis offload on the 30 metre line to Adam Reynolds put the little half in the clear before passing on to Alex Johnston who raced the remaining distance to score on the touch-line. Bryson Goodwin lined up the shot at goal and made no mistake with his first attempt of the year making it 22-0.
It took 20 minutes for the Titans to finally get within striking distance thanks to a penalty. But the Rabbitohs defence held strong, managing to force an error from former Rabbitoh Dave Taylor right on the try-line.
In the 24th minute, the Titans finally managed to open their account for the night when Anthony Don intercepted a lobbing John Sutton pass to race 70 metres untouched. Aidan Sezer converted to make it 22-6 after 26 minutes.
The Titans began to gain in confidence in the latter stages of the half. Don made it two tries three minutes from half-time when he diffused a cross-field kick in the in-goal to plant the ball down. Sezer converted to make it 22-12 to take the teams to the sheds.
On the resumption, it took just two minutes for the Rabbitohs to get back into gear – Adam Reynolds putting a kick in behind the Titans defensive line for Dylan Waker to swoop and score his third try of the evening. Goodwin added the extras to make it 28-12.
Just two minutes later, Alex Johnston took a Titans bomb beautifully before racing 85 metres to outrun all defenders and seemingly score. But the video referee ruled against the try on the grounds of the Rabbitohs blocking Titans defenders during the kick.
George Burgess barnstormed his way over the line, but the Titans stripped the ball, before Chris McQueen in turn stripped the ball from the Titans to make his own claim for a four-pointer. The video referee ruled against the try.
The Rabbitohs had a third try disallowed just minutes later when Dylan Walker was denied his fourth for an ‘alleged’ knock-on – Rabbitohs Members and supporters left the Gold Coast in no doubt about their frustrations.
But Walker made no mistake in the 64th minute when he took a an offload from Greg Inglis inside the 20 metre line for the Souths Junior to notch up his fourth try of the night. Goodwin converted to make it 34-12.
The floodgates then opened up for the Rabbitohs when George Burgess busted through and flicked a pass inside to Alex Johnston who crossed for his second under the black dot. Goodwin made no mistake to notch up 40 points for the men in red and green.
The Titans scored a late consolation try through Dave Taylor, but the damage had been done – the Rabbitohs defeating the Titans by 40-18.

Rabbitohs 40 (Dylan Walker 4, Kirisome Auva’a, Alex Johnston 2, tries; Adam Reynolds 2, Bryson Goodwin 3 goals)
Defeated
Titans 18 (Anthony Don 2, Dave Taylor tries; Aidan Sezer 3 goals)
