He could be or atleast a relative, looks alike.

Scored a try against Toowoomba today at lock and then shifted to Fullback. Sounds skilled but I havn't seen enough of him.

I saw him play for Wests Tigers in a trial game at carrara .. he didn't really look like he could cope with NRL standard at that stage but wasn't a bad player so could make it oneday if he has improved.

He is Darren's brother I think he might be younger than Darren, he looks older than him though.

He is indeed the brother of our great champion Darren Lockyer. It would be great to see him play in the first grade, especially following the perfomance he put on today for the Tigers. Just picture Darren playing 5/8 and Matt fullback. Wouldn't that be quite a combination?

Matt Lockyer is the younger brother of Australian captain Darren Lockyer. He trialed with the Wests Tigers in 2002 in two games at five-eight and missed out on a contract with the club and has not been trialed since. Good player who can play as one member said 1 through to 6 and is currently locking the scrum for the Easts Tigers (played Toowoomba today).

Matt also played in the QLD Residents team on Wednesday night which was the curtain raiser for the Origin decider.

I've always thought he was pretty good... He has a few similar style to Darren, the way he glides accross the field. Very versatile too.. I always wondered why he never played first grade..

Surely someone must have offered him a contract.

Not to my knowledge.

Lockyer's only interest was that of the Wests Tigers in 2002 in which he has since then played purely in the QLD Cup with Easts.

Tigers could use him right about now.
So I take he only wanted to play for the Tigers?

No idea, though I wouldn't think that a player looking for a NRL contract would pigeon hole himself to one team only.

Anyone know how old he is?

I am pretty sure he is a couple of years younger than Darren making him 26 or 27 roughly. He is not listed on the Easts Tigers website under their players list unfortunately for some reason.

Easts Tigers will be one of the feeder teams for South Sydney next year. Perhaps he might get a run for the Rabbitohs.

a possible titan's buy?

No, I don't think so.

We will be looking at getting 22-25 NRL experienced players and then hold off a little leaving room open in our 35 man squad for QLD Cup players from our feeder clubs (Burleigh, Tweed Heads and Ipswich) and Elite Academy squad players.

I coached hom 4 years ago. I think the problem with Matt was he was caught between peoples expectations of him (playing in the shadow of his brother) and his own expectations. Whilst he is a skilled player he is no where his brothers class (who is). As such, he would often try things on the field , some things went brilliantly and some invariably go wrong. As such he had a high mistake rate.

I think his moving around in different positions hasn't helped his cause as he has played all positions except front row and hasn't allowed him to master the art of a position. I think 5/8 is his best position although I don't think he has played their much lately.

He is a champion bloke and hope he does get another shot.
