I once heard the Saints referred to as the first "punk" band. Its all very objective IMO.

mc5, the stooges both arrived at the same time. it was definitely pre- punk. and they probably influenced a lot of punk bands [but so did the who,the doors, and the velvets, and i wouldn't class those bands as punk]

even blue oyster cult had an influence on the new york underground scene, i believe both patti smith and jim carroll worked with them.

mc5 are pre punk and a huge influence on punk like the new york dolls were

MC5 kind of took their cues from some of the dirtier garage punk that was floating around in the early 60's, the most notable and influential being The Sonics
The 5 were just a great farkin rock and roll band.
If you were in Sydney on sunday night you should have caught my mates at the Sando, The SC5. Awesome night. Deniz Tek got up and played a few tunes with the boys as well.

I hear ya, pigeon-holing and the like. Just with The Sonics I cannot describe them any other way.
My nephew and his mates came around mine to listen to some records and talk some shyte as they were forming a "punk" band. The were eyeing off all the usual suspects, The 5, Stooges, Birdman, Saints, Ramones.
I said to them, "Lads take these seven songs away, learn them as hard, fast and dirty as you can, thats what all the good ones did"

You can hear all the influences throughout all "punk" music right here.

Geez I know this thread is supposed to be about the MC5 but i brought up the Sonics and low and behold it gets announced they are playing here for the first time. April 22nd.
Big Dave has got himself a great day at Enmore to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Hoodoo Gurus releasing Stoneage Romeos, with some unreal bands, Red Kross, The Fleshtones, The Sonics, Deniz Tek and Rob Younger, 5.6.7.8's and of course the Gurus doing the whole Stoneage album. All across three venues, The Enmore, Notes and The Green Room.

costs a bit but it will be worth it
I'll start another thread for this

Aahh, good times..

Back in the late 80s would see me most Friday and Saturday nights at the Kardomah, Evening Star, STUC, Graphic Arts Club, Hopetown and sometimes making the trek to the Dee Why Pub seeing bands like Hitmen, Lime Spiders, Celibate Rifles, Scientists, New Christs, Johnnys, Screaming Tribemen etc etc...

Good times..

MC5 were formed in 1964, Stooges in 1967..Bands like The Seeds, Count Five, Troggs were formed in early to mid 60s and they were considered 'garage punk' or at least highly influential - Australia had bands like Missing Links and Purple Hearts formed in the mid 60s and also considered 'garage punk'

There's a load of stuff on You Tube with these bands...

You're in my world CB.
I have some strong ties with all those bands mentioned, some strong, some tangled and some just hanging by a thread.
