Leeds Rhinos have announced that former England three quarter Nathan McAvoy will join the club for the 2006 season.

The 28 year-old will join the club with immediate effect after being released from his home-town club, Salford City Reds, at the end of Super League 10.
McAvoy said: "I am delighted to have been given the opportunity to play for the Rhinos and I truly intend to make my mark with the club. I am excited about the start of the new season, there are so many world class players at the club, especially the young ones, and I hope to make my experience count."
The club have also confirmed that McAvoy will be outside their top 20 players for the season but that he has not yet be assigned a squad number.

I wonder why? Didn't get in the Salford sqaud, so... Leeds buy him?

And if he's outside their core players, surely they've got the academy strength in the backs to call on if required.

I just can't get my head around this signing. Why did a player who couldn't get into Salford's squad sign for Leeds?Millard was questionable but I just can't believe this.

I can understand his signing if they intend to play him in the forwards as a 2nd rower, but definitley not as a wing or centre, he's too slow for that now.

I think this signing is actually detrimental to the British game.

If he plays wing or centre,he will be hampering the development of future stars like Ashley Gibson(who scored a hat-trick and kicked several goals on debut),Lee Smith,Peter Fox etc and if he plays 2nd row he will be in the way of players like Jason Golden,Carl Ablett etc. These players need game time to improve, and playing a no-hoper like McAvoy is IMO a lot worse for the British gmae than playing an import. At least the import would be a decent player.

i know they need a back but come on, McAvoy is not the answer.

he couldnt even get in a poor salford squad so he has no chance of getting in the leeds.

i take it he's no good?

Well he has everything required, he's big and strong but probably dosen't have the ticker.
If Tony Smith can get the best out of him, it may be a suprisingly good signing. We just have to wait and see, as i said earlier he has to be used in the forwards.
