McGregor: Reasons Behind Team Selections

Mon 1st February, 03:00PM A A

St George Illawarra Dragons Head Coach Paul McGregor is keen to see how his players respond to the upcoming pre-season trial fixtures commencing on Saturday.
The Dragons will be split into two travelling squads in the coming days as they take part in both the annual NRL Nines tournament held at Eden Park, Wellington as well as face-off against the Wynnum-Manly Seagulls at Pinklands Oval, Redlands.

McGregor discusses his rationale behind selecting players for the two fixtures as well as providing his assessment on prop Russell Packer.

Paul McGregor is glad to have some selection dilemmas on his hands

Dragons coach Paul McGregor knows he will have to deliver some disappointing news to a fair chunk of his roster come round one but it’s a luxury he’s happy to have.
Russell Packer, Mose Masoe, Dunamis Lui, Sebastine Ikahifoe and Siliva Havili have all been added to the roster while the likes of Mike Cooper, Jack de Belin, Jake Marketo and Will Matthews enjoyed career-best NRL campaigns.
Not all can fit into a 17-man squad and McGregor is looking forward to the selection headache ahead of his side’s march 7 season-opener against Melbourne.
“It’s a position I wasn’t fortunate enough to have last year,” McGregor said.
“There’s nothing like competition for spots. I know all the good teams have it.

“They've all got quality players across the board and certainly always someone there to take their positions.

“I think we're really starting to build on that here if look at where we were at this time last year to where we are this year.”

Initially I had strong reservations about Paul McGregor and his long term coaching aspirations.I must admit he has grown into the position and things are looking positive in the future.should we remain relatively injury free with key players I think we will surprise many people.Really looking forward to the season, starting with the Charity Shield.
