Michael Chee Kam gets two-game NRL ban from Tigers

Wests Tigers utility Michael Chee Kam will be free to return in round nine against Penrith after the NRL club finalised his punishment for a common assault.

The Tigers on Wednesday stood Chee Kam down for two matches and fined the 27-year-old an undisclosed amount following his guilty plea in court last Wednesday.

Chee Kam has already served one game of his ban against the Gold Coast on Saturday night, while he was not named to face the Sydney Roosters this weekend.

It came after the NRL entered discussions with the club last Friday, who had originally deemed him free to play until his sentencing on May 7.

“Wests Tigers has worked closely with the NRL Integrity Unit throughout this process, which has now been finalised,” the club said via a statement.

“The club has provided Chee Kam with additional support and education during this time, and will continue to work closely with him to uphold the strong values, behaviour and culture of Wests Tigers.”

Chee Kam had originally been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm in January, however that was withdrawn and dismissed in court last Wednesday.

Instead the New Zealand-born forward pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of common assault over the December incident. He will be sentenced on May 7.

The two-game ban means Chee Kam can return as part of the NRL’s Magic Round at Suncorp Stadium — the same venue he was the last-minute hero for the Tigers against Brisbane in round five.

That seems completely fair to me. Common assault can be absolutely nothing. The law has changed and that is a good thing but it's extremely unlikely he bashed anyone if he has been charged with common assault.

We need his running game but hopefully not his stupid mistakes.

Slap on the wrist big time. After the off-season from hell, I thought the NRL would have come down much harder via the club.

It may also show what Madge thinks of him and no doubt pleaded his case, maybe, that is.

I think he's lucky.

Interesting that Musgrove has gone but his partner 'in crime' is still playing at Penrith way.

Despite the brain explosions he is a good player. Straight in to replace McQueen or on the bench or to replace Jennings or Marsters. He is better than basically every other edge option we have other than Matterson.
