These two teams are the two ends of the spectrum of US Rugby League. Mediaare a team formed out of the Media Wolfpack Rugby Union club and this is their first year of competition in the American National Rugby League. They have one veteran US Rugby League player and one Aussie import helping them learn the technical aspects of the game. They are a young and enthusiastic side who are playing League in the Union offseason. Most are playing League for the first time. They have a large fan base who follow them when they play away from home. The Glen Mills Bulls are the longest serving and most successful team in the US competition. They have ten players who are currently in the US team as well as a few past representitives. They are an older team with a wealth of Rugby League experience, including having former St George player and AMNRL CEO David Niu on their playing staff. Media and Glen Mills have played twice this year for one win each. They are due to play again tonight, and will also meet in the championship final of the AMNRL on 2nd August. Go Media, even if they are a sister club to Parramatta.

Correction to above story;
The teams have only met once for a close win to the bulls.
Media are undefeated except for this one game.

The bulls are a sister side to Cant. Bulldogs, so the game may be a preview of the NRL final.

Mantarays may have to wait
The Glen Mills Bulls powered their way to a certain fourth straight Championship berth with a convincing win over a depleted Media Mantarays squad at Jack Pearson Field. The Mantarays were without big guns Fred Gruhler and Chris Cahill, whom are both recovering from injury and racing the clock for full fitness in the Saturday, August 4 Championship Final at Dealy Field in Sea Isle City, New Jersey.

With the final of the North American Rugby League on today, I thought it might be good to reflect back on the first ever game of League played by the Media Mantarays. They have now played a grand total of 6 games of League and have a chance to become champions of North America if they win their seventh, but here is a match report of their first;

Rays Shine

Not often do you have an evening where you can witness a come from behind, emotional, inspiring team victory like the Philadelphia area did with the Sixers last night. It was incredible. If however, you are a Media Rugger like myself, you were treated to TWO come from behind, emotional, inspiring team victories.

Yes Media, we WON our first ever Media League - Manta Rays match over the New Jersey Sharks (Hibernians) last evening at Elwyn.

For me it was actuallythe first League Match I had ever seen. Honestly I felt a little out of place at first. The Manta Rays were getting crushed. Jersey had way more fans so I didn't recognize anyone save Artingstall, and two media players on the sidelines. Everyone else was in the game. The game is self explanatory, but most of the rules I didn't know, so I took some pictures and thought about heading home.

Then more Media guys started to arrive. Jason, Pauly et el. The more that came, the more subs came off the field. So I had a chance to overhear several discussions. I discovered that they too didn't know the rules or how the scoring went. I was clueless, but not alone. So I stayed for the half time pep talk. Dan - "Come on you got to play harder, Get out there and HIT!!!" Then Fred - "We can win this - in this game you can score 50 points in a quarter." Hmmm I wonder. We were down 34-8 at half by the way. (games are 20 min quarters that seem to fly by)

Well, sure enough, Media started to get their act together. Hard runs by Ric Dortone. Inspiringdashes by (Super) Dave DeVelario. Slashes by Kevin Flaherty. Dan McHugh with "out of his mind" crashes right up the middle. Steady ready Fred consistently attacking. Planters tackling everything in sight. Bob Dodge even giving it his all. Everyone contributed in that second half.

The score narrowed, and with time closing Media went up 38-36. The Sharks countered and were up 40 -38 with barely a possession left. The Sharks gained possession, but the defense held on the 2 meter mark. Media then started to drive, and made it all the way for a score,and a 44-40 win. It was impressive.

Media - I am an old timer I guess. Sure I have had resistance to the "League Thing." But, you know what, it wasn't that bad. Lots of running, quick passes and tackling. Great Practice for Union. Maybe it didn't have the grandeur of a 15 a side match, but you know what, who cares? It was well worth it to seesome heart come back to Media Rugby. If this is what it takes then welcome aboard. If this carries over to the Fall - we will be fine!

Congratulations Fred, Dan, Captain Ric and the other organizers. It truly was an inspiring game for the Media Manta Ray's first ever Match. Hopefully the Manta Ray League Rugby will be part of the Media Organization as long as Wolfpack Union has.

Player of the Game - It has to be Super Dave. Just seeing him out there. Inspiring!! Great Job.

The match report of the US final from AMNRL website;

Bulls make it Four from Four The Glen Mills Bulls made it four at the shore with a 26-16 victory over the Media Mantarays to take out there fourth straight Championship Final at Dealy Field In Sea Isle City, NJ. In front of a huge crowd and magnificent conditions the Bulls and Mantarays put on an entertaining and physical display of Rugby League to cap off a great season for both teams. The Bulls scored early in the first quarter and looked to be going to run away with the game as they sprinted to an 18-0 lead in the first period. The Manatarays however had other plans and fought hard to keep the Bulls scoreless for much of the next two quarters. Big games from their star players, Warren Heilig and Dave De Velerio, sparked a fourth quarter revival and at one point the Mantarays came back to within six points of a visibly tiring Bulls team.

Ed Woodbridge was inspirational for the Bulls and just beaten by Dave De Velerio of the Mantarays for man of the match honors. The Mantarays scored a try on the final bell to go down 16-26 and round off an incredible debut Rugby League season. The Bulls finish off 2001 with another title and full credit to their players and coaching staff for their victory.

Is it just me or does part of their logo look very similar to the current logo of the doggies? Have a look.

BTW,

This is the North American message board address;

http://communities.msn.com/NorthAmericanRugbyLeague/messageboard.msnw

I have spent some time trying to make this an interesting site because I think there are many American web surfers who may come across the site and gain an interest in League. The guy who started the site, Aaron, is an American Union player who has never seen a game of League. He developed an interest from surfing the web.

I urge everyone to go over, register, and put up a few threads - just ask a few questions for Aaron to answer. Anything to keep the site active. I see this site as a positive effort to spread the game to new and fertile ground.
