Mega Trade

Not as big as the Herschel Walker or Ricky Williams trade in terms of draft picks exchanged, but Denver and the Deadskins have agreed to trade Clinton Portis for Champ Bailey and a 2nd round pick. Both will get contracts in the $50 mil range. As a Bronco fan, I'm not sure what I think about it. The last 3 SB champs haven't had great runners, I can't forget what we achieved with the great TD in the side. I haven't seen much of the Deadskins, hence I have no opinion about Champ. Thoughts anyone.

Champ, he is a flat-out SUPERSTAR! I'm struggling to think of a CB who would rate even near as good as him at the moment. Like Dawkins for Philly he is the kind of player you happily build a D around.

But in saying that Portis is a freak. He will be in the HOF one day barring serious injury & I wouldnt give up a star RB for any D player of any era.

I tend to disagree, as great as offence is - the modern day game is more reliant on a good defence. A good defence beats a good offence as they say.

And another point is that a good offensive line can make any running back look good. Look at the Vikings this year, Moe Williams is nothign more than a run of the mill back up running back - yet he looked like a star behind that massive vikings O Line. However a cornerback is all by himself, if you have a star cornerback he isnt relying on his D line anywhere near as much as a running back relies on his O line.

I could go on for a while, so ill cut it short :)

The Broncos got the better end of the trade.

Each to their own but Miami screws that POV up for mine. Their O-Line is hardly potent but by running a basic Offensive scheme of "Run Ricky Run" they do a hell of alot betther then alright. The only other weapon on that team is Chambers & by rights he is only a second string WR at best.

I agree about the O vs D bit but my point was in regards to a straight one for one swap. Take a guy like Ronnie Lott or Howie Long & while their talent would span generations in this game they couldnt win one on their own. Change one yes, win one no. Now take a Walter Payton or Larry Csonka & therein lies a gamebreaker of the greatest kind. Guy's like that dont come along often & in Paytons case maybe never but Portis will, IMO at least, be the sort of RB to take close games & make them WINS.

With the success the Broncos have had producing Running Backs recently replacing Portis won't be a problem. They might go with the guy who ran a Marathon against the colts in SNF.

More free agent news, the Freak has signed with Philly. I would have thought that wideout was the Eagles most pressing need, they should have gone for another Titan, Justin McCareins.

I'm not sold on this. If he stays healthy then it could be a very astute buy. If not, & this is a BIG possibility, then we're up the creek considering it's an 8 year deal. This is somewhat weird though because Reid isnt one to build teams in FA, he seems to prefer getting raw talent & moulding it to what he wants a-la McNabb.

Shame we lost A.J as well.

The thing to watch from Philly is the rumour about Tra Thomas being traded to Chicago & thus gaining the Iggles a 14th round pick which gives them a red hot chance at picking up a worthwhile WR. Dont know how much water this holds but even as an Eagles fan I wouldnt miss Tra to much...

Also add the strong rumour that Philly will trade a 2nd rd pick for Terell Owens, who has stated more than once he wants to play with McNabb, & this FA is actually looking slightly promising with only better to come.

Owens is so much better than a 2nd round pick, the Eagles would be laughing if they got that. Think about it, what second round pick is going to come within the same league as TO? TO is one of the best mixes of size and speed you will ever see. Shame he is a wanker though.

Back to your previous example about the dolphins, I think that example only proves that the Redskins are losing in this trade big time. Ricky Williams is an unbelievable running back - but his figures this year were average at best, that O Line killed him. It just shows, no matter how good the running back - it means nothing if the defense is meeting him every play in the backfield.

In other news Peyton Manning has just become the highest paid player in NFL history by resigning with the Colts.

Que? Miami finished 12th last year & like I said, on the back of Williams & a second rate WR. The Deadskins were around 27th with a D core of Smoot, Upshaw, Trotter, Arrington & Bailey. Two of those guys made Pro Bowl & all would be on the starting roster of near on any team in the league. I'm not sure how you read that but for mine it says a dominant RB had a greater effect during the year then a dominant CB.
Meeting him in the backfield is due to there being no other weapon in the Miami O therefore 'backers know they can afford to creep. Again, I'm not trying to argue the productivity or benefits of a RB vs a whole D, just a quality RB vs a quality CB.

I disagree with you again, the Dolphins didnt come 12th because of their offence, they came 12th because they have (in my mind) the best defence in the league.

Ricky was averaging 3.5 yards a carry this season, thats really not very good and he only managed 9 rushing touchdowns. If you had taken out Ricky Williams from the Dolphins it would have hurt them, but not as bad as you may think.

I agree it wasnt simply because of their offense, in fact I'm trying to explain that in any of this I'm not comparing "whole" sides to a particular player. Although I did mention the 5 above we are getting a little off topic to the original question.

Until I can explain it in a way that puts us on common ground we are just going to go around in circles. My original comment was about a quality RB Vs a quality CB, & I happily stand by the fact I think the RB, as a single entity, is a greater game factor then a CB, thusly Washington have cleaned up here.

We'll just have to agree to disagree then. 2 years ago I would have agreed with you without a doubt, but my opinions have changed, ah well.

Qunetin Griffin is the new RB's name but if I was Mike Shanahan, I'd be making a play for Antowain Smith and let them split time with Mike Anderson playing Fullback. I hope we pick up a good linebacker and wide receiver in the draft to cover for the aging Rod Smith and Ed McCaffery. We have the 24th overall pick and Washingtons second round pick so we should be able to pick up some decent players although most of Denvers best players have come late in the draft, just like TD came in the sixth round, 195th overall.

Denver knows how to produce the best out of their RB's so I'll leave it in the capable hands of Mike Shanahan but should this trade backfire, it will be the end of his career in Denver.

He's a great player ......but the Colts should also invest in getting some more dudes to toughen up their defence.

With Denvers style of play I can see Staley fitting right in or even Charlie Garner. Both of those guys are good hard runners & although neither will run 98 yds they can butt heads with the best of them & keep on going.
