The brain as well. Many moons ago, around the time that I married Mrs Gronk, my new step mother was walking down the carpeted spiral stairs in their house in Baulkham Hills. Her heel slipped and she fell backwards and hit the back of her head in the steel treads. That concussive impact forced the brain forward and caused massive brain bleeding / bruising. She was in Westmead ICU and her brain was swelling. They first put a stint in her skull to allow the brain fluid to seep out, however the swelling was so great that it was going to cause more brain damage by presssing up against the skull.
Soon they had to remove a section of the skull in her forehead to let the brain essentially expand. Once the swelling had subsided, that part of the brain started to die and they had to remove it. They warned us that she would lose all abilties to walk talk think shit you name it.
She was transferred to the brain injury unit of Westmead and was there for 6 months. The goal was that they use the science of neuroplasticity to retrain other parts of the brain to do those tasks. So with slow repetative practice, she learnt (carved out new neural pathways) to remember who her significant people were, talk, walk and eventually she returned home 90% normal.
Ironically, a mate from school was ice skating with his kids at Macquarie Ice Rink 6/7 years ago, fell backwards and (yep you guessed it) rinse and repeat above. Thankfully he has regained his quality of life and is back teaching as a Prof at a prominant NSW University. That process however took 9 months in Royal North Shore.
So you can retrain your brain, you just have to trust the science.
And, of course, you have to actually do it. Not just think about it.
