It really doesn't add much - it still sounds like they are using garbage cans as drums. St. Anger and Frantic are probably the only decent songs on the album and those remixes don't do alot to them...

Frantic was aweful.

St Anger was the only one that could be good, if you got rid of some repeats n added some guitar solo

Actually never mind. Regardless of the way these songs are engineered, mixed, produced, mastered, whatever ... they're really not all that flash anyway. One listen to their 1991 album makes you realise that.

The songs lack the qualities that made Metallica great in their early days. The guitars lack crunch, the songwriting lacks any real spark - it's just a sh*t album basically.

I suggest Master of Puppets for a more enjoyable experience.

Those days are great too, but suit a different mood for me. Songs like The Thing That Should Not Be, Master Of Puppets, Fade To Black, Welcome Home etc etc are brilliant songs but I enjoy them on a different level to the Black album, which offers a punchier sound, more concise songwriting and absolutely miles better production. No 80's Metallica album had anything close to an intro like Enter Sandman... nothing.

Also I find Kill Em All to be different again, people usually lump it in with the next three but it's very unique to me - mostly short, punchy songs chock full of energy. Metal Militia is a kickass song, whereas something like even Battery is more calculated and intricate. Lars has sometimes mentioned that RTL, MOP and AJFA are all very tight and structured in their recording ... they weren't willing to feel their way through the thing, instead making sure everything was tight as it could get. Metallica are better when they loosen up a bit, or at least feel like they are.

That's funny - I always considered the Black album to be the beginning of the end. A good album? Sure, but in hindsight it should have immediately sent warning lights flashing that something wasn't right.

Master of Puppets is the album for me too.

Lol, there are 4 albums and an EP prior to that one that are much better then what came out in 1991...

It's all subjective. I'm a bigger fan of good, heavy rock than speed or thrash type metal - even though I like both. What would you guys prefer - Megadeth or even Iron Maiden, or AC/DC? Love Maiden, but if I had to choose I'd take Back in Black to the remote island with me in a second.

I know you will say "Its all subjective" but if you make a comment like that you make it sound like it is a fact, or at least something commonly agreed upon. Unfortunately that is very incorrect. If you think the intro to Enter Sandman holds a candle to the intro to 'One' or 'Harvester of Sorrow' or even 'Blackened' then you are kidding yourself.
