Players Stood Down

Author: Sydney Roosters
Monday, 24 May 2004

A meeting was held earlier today with Sydney Roosters players Craig Wing and Anthony Minichiello.

The Sydney Roosters were represented by Head Coach Ricky Stuart, Chief Executive Brian Canavan, and Deputy Chairman Michael Conn.

The Club acknowledges that both players have been penalised by the NSWRL for their actions during camp, however all players at the Sydney Roosters understand they have social responsibilities and a strict code of behaviour.

It is the belief of this club through its board of directors that the two players broke club policy.

Both Anthony Minichiello and Craig Wing will be stood down from the Roosters game against the New Zealand Warriors next Sunday at Aussie Stadium.

We understand this action punishes their teammates, fans and sponsors of the Sydney Roosters.

The Sydney Roosters are a foundation club with a 97 year history; the players of today are simply custodians of our tradition. We pride ourselves on setting the highest benchmarks on and off the field.

We trust this decision will now put an end to speculation and allow our players and coaching team to fully prepare for our game against the Warriors on Sunday and for Craig Wing to fully concentrate on the important State of Origin game on Wednesday night against Queensland.

Without knowing the club policy, it's too harsh in my opinion. Seems more like a sacrificial face saving excercise than anything. Mini - maybe - he did take a phone along against orders and may have had involvement with the phone call. But Wing? What did he do wrong? He broke no rules. There was no curfew in place. He didn't act offensively, nor did Gower. Unless he lied about the night, Wing doesn't have a case to answer in my opinion.

yeah you're right - we really should wait a few weeks before dropping them to show all the nuff nuffs in cyber land we are serious about punishment.

Ohh wait heres a good conspiracy theory for you - maybe we rigged the draw so that we were playing crap teams when the Walker and Wing/Mini sagas happened... just so we could drop them and still be confident of winning.

I agree about it being very tough on Wing.

As far as I can see he did nothing at all wrong - just had the bad luck to go out on the same night as a bunch of idiots who disgraced themselves.

I don't see anything he's done that deserves this sort of action

brook - he and Mini were punished for breaking a Rooster rule which has a number of licensed premises in the Cross as being off limits.

Seems harsh on Wing when a certain "Wallster" saw most of the team there only a few weeks ago.
