Paul Jotter wasn't the first on the scene. Not by a long shot. A small crowd had gathered on the steps of the old mill already and Jotter muttered apologies as he shouldered his way through.
"Make way," he said, "I'm with the Miser's Falls Star".
They moved aside easily enough, but when he saw what lay on the steps, he wished they hadn't.
The man's skin had been peeled off to reveal the muscle and bone beneath. Without lips or a face to give it definition, the death's head grinned bloodily up at Jotter as he fumbled with his camera.
"You the new reporter?" asked the police officer on duty. Jotter nodded as he snapped photos and tried his best to not think about the smell coming up from the body or wonder what happened to the guy's skin.
"Who was the victim?"
"Barry Wilkes," the officer replied. Jotter could see that the officer was intentionally not looking at the corpse. Apparently he didn't have much of a stomach for it either.
"Any idea what happened here?"
"Still under investigation. You'd need to talk to the chief".
The officer pointed up the hill to where Inspector Tony Wilson stood with a notepad in hand and a grim look on his face.
"Inspector," Jotter said as he stumbled up towards the town's chief of police, "Any chance of a quote for the Star?"
The older man shook his head.
"Not now, kid," he replied, "Come by my office in the morning".
He turned his attention to the crowd.
"Everybody run on home now, alright? It's not safe out at night".
Jotter sighed and made his way back towards Evergreen Place.
