laugh how could we "steal" him from you? hes under contract?

We have two CEO saying two contradictory things.

Who is telling the truth? well we prob wont know but saying were trying to pinch him is ridiculous

Monas himself has also said he's not going anywhere Seano. One of those CEOs has lied this year and was threatened with legal action. Souths asked about Monaghan: Manly
August 1, 2005 - 8:54PM

Manly chief executive Pat Wilson says the NRL club has knocked back an approach by South Sydney for Sea Eagles skipper Michael Monaghan.

Channel Nine reported that Manly had offered the Sea Eagles halfback to the Rabbitohs during a phone call last Monday.

The Nine report said Souths chief executive Shane Richardson confirmed he had received a call from Manly "offering Souths Monaghan's services".

It said there was a "behind the scenes push to oust him (Monaghan)" by Manly after signing Melbourne halfback Matt Orford for 2006 and that the Rabbitohs were "prepared to look at Monaghan".

However, Wilson said: "that's not the case, we are disappointed in the story.

"There was a call from Shane Richardson but we did not offer Michael to Souths - we've had no discussions with Michael or his manager on this issue.

"There was an approach made by Souths."

Asked if Souths were interested in Monaghan, Wilson said: "Of course they are...but we've had no further discussions on the matter."

Manly executive director Paul Cummings said Monaghan was contracted to the Sea Eagles for another three years and "that's the end of it".

"We have not approached Souths about Monaghan so basically that's the end of the story," he said.

"As far as we are concerned he has signed for three years with us and that's the end of it from our point of view.

"I don't know where this rumour has started but I can say to you that Michael Monaghan is contracted with us for three more years."

Monaghan's manager Jim Banaghan said the Nine story was "crap".

Banaghan said he was not surprised Souths were interested in Monaghan after Bulldogs pivot Braith Anasta and Orford knocked back lucrative Rabbitohs offers recently.

"Souths are desperate to get players, mate. When you have two people knock back half a million dollar offers you will do anything to try and get a player," he said.

"Souths want Monaghan, Monaghan doesn't want Souths."

Meanwhile, Manly coach Des Hasler has slapped a media ban on his players after the Sea Eagles slumped to their fifth straight NRL loss - a heartbreaking 26-24 home defeat to North Queensland on Sunday.

The former ladder leaders have slumped to seventh on the NRL ladder with five regular season games left to make a finals run. That will be in the Sydney Morning Herald.

Well the way I look at it Souths have nothing to gain from lying about who contacted who - IF manly are going to release him they will do it regardless. However, manly have a lot to gain from lying about it as morale already looks low.

It will be interesting to see what happens thats for sure

Richo confirmed Manly called Souths about offloading Monas, why would he lie?

I can't believe you blokes are still trying to punt this poor loyal servant of the club, I heard you don't have enough salary cap space for Lyon and that he's now likely to join the Gold Coast in 2007, but it a bit rough trying to punt monas just to try and make some space for Lyon.

I'm lead to believe that the Manly management rang Souths, Roosters and Melbourne and offered Monas to them.

Easy sour grapes Manly got 2 of the 3 players Souths wanted Bell and Orford so since you couldn't get a half back by yourselves you dicieded to ignore the fact Monaghan has a new 3 year contract with Manly and go after him.

once again, what would Souths have to gain from making lying about who approached who?

And even if they were lying about it, it is certainly no crime to ask the club if they have Monoghan in their plans given the recent press

There will be more than enough money for Lyon if Manly go after him in 2007. Menzies, Kennedy, Witt and Heckenburg just to name a few off contract.

uh ever heard of the anti tampering rule? Monaghan isn't availible to any other club but Manly until July 1 2008 when his current contract with the club is up, on July 11th and July 21st Monaghan stated that he's not going anywhere he's happy at Manly but souths were just too busy courting Orford or saying that Manly are in breach of the salary cap if they sign Orford to notice that not only did Monas welcome Orford to the Sea Eagles but in round 20 during his time off Monas went to Melbourne to see how Orford and Bell play so he could effectivly formulate game plans next year. Souths by lying about it makes their statement about Manly breaching the salary cap more creditable.

As best as I can remember, it was also reported that his sister lives in Melbourne, it was her birthday and their parents were also down in Melbourne for that weekend.

But IF Souths did initiate the contact they contacted the MANLY CLUB anyway and not the player so how can that be considered anti-tampering. This is not a rare occurance for clubs to release contracted players - especially given the talk about Monoghans future.

Give up on the anti-tampering line cause its just plain wrong!
