Monday Night War II

The Beginning

The years between WCW's bankruptcy and TNA's rise from upstart promotion to genuine global phenomenon were seen by many as pro wrestling's dark ages. While the business was in a far stronger position financially than it had been in the 70s and 80s, the existence of one global promotion and no credible challengers had created something of a vacuum within the industry.

Gone were the halcyon days in which fans across the world scoured internet message boards for rumors of the next high profile jump; gone were the days of edgy new personas, high risk wrestling, and balls to the wall promotion that had captured the hearts, minds, and imaginations of fans during the 'Monday Night Wars' that had pitted WCW and the WWF against one another.

Smarks (short for 'smart mark', meaning a fan with knowledge of the way the industry works) bemoaned the lack of competition because, in its absence, the WWE had become something of a stagnant organisation. Without competition to encourage the creation of stars and the evolution of the product - WWE PPVs (of which there were anywhere between 12 and 15 a year) had begun to feel like reruns. With only one company generating talent - the big stars were either old or, in the minority, home grown stars who had been so thoroughly forced down the throats of fans that ratings and buyrates were at an all time low.

TNA's jump from distant second to genuine contender didn't happen overnight - nor did it immediately reinvent an industry threatened by the increasing popularity of mixed martial arts promotion, UFC. What it did do, however, was force the WWE to take risks and forced TNA to step up their game.

And while the head to head battle that gave the wars their name would not eventuate immediately, the signing of Hulk Hogan in the fall of 2009 was the first rumble of a distant thunderhead. A storm was coming, and it was wrestling fans who would get to reap the benefits of a soil long parched.

--------------------

I've attempted a diary in this vein once before on EWB (entitled the Death of the WWE) and it fell on its ass because the above 'historical' style narrative meant I had to sim the entire game before I could begin writing. So, while I will use the above format from time to time, the rest will appear in a simple recap formula.

I'll be booking both WWE and TNA, as this is a diary about the 'war', not about one promotion bankrupting another.

Strap yourselves in.

TNA Creative Shake-Up
As reported earlier, Bubba the Love Sponge has been posting updates on Twitter giving the impression that Hogan and Bischoff will be taking over Vince Russo's creative duties in TNA.

Insiders within TNA have indicated that Russo remains on the writing team, but has been demoted from head writer. Bischoff will, as rumors stated, take over as head writer. At this point, Hogan has no official place on the writing team.

Ed Ferrera and Matt Conway will continue on in their current roles alongside Scott D'Amore and Russo.

Hogan Flexing his Muscle Already?
Within days of the confirmation of Hogan's arrival at TNA, several workers have been released from their TNA obligations. Although no signings have been announced at this time, it is a safe assumption that these releases are in preparation for the rumored influx of talent that many have been anticipating.

Those given their marching orders include Cody Deaner, Hector Guerrero, Jesse Neal, Kip James, Roxxi Laveaux, Shark Boy, and Sojourner Bolt.

On a hiring front, plenty of names are being thrown around as potential recruits as Bischoff, Hogan, and Dixie Carter look to continue pressing the WWE. Familiar names such as Ric Flair, Scott Hall, and Bill Goldberg have been thrown around as well as several members of the upcoming Hulkamania Tour of Australia such as Ken Kennedy, Umaga, and Orlando Jordan. More to come on this.

WWE Looking to re-hire Booker? Other signing news and rumors

WWE management are said to be interested in re-hiring Booker T, who has recently been released from his TNA contract. Although Booker left the company on less than friendly terms, it is said that the company are wanting to bring him in to offer some fresh feuds for their top tier stars as well as to put over younger talent much as he did in TNA with guys like Robert Roode.

Former ECW New Breed member, Marcus Cor Van (Monty Brown) is also said to be in talks with the company. The feeling from those outside the company is that the WWE would rather have him on the books than risk him returning to TNA.

With Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne set to host this week's Raw, it can also be confirmed that Roddy Piper will be guest hosting the following week. After Piper's recent comments about wanting 'one last match' following his appearance on It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, the company are said to be prepared to offer him a match at the upcoming Survivor Series PPV - probably as the leader of a team in a Survivor Series match, or potentially against somebody like Jack Swagger or The Miz.

Bryan Danielson is expected to debut on this week's edition of ECW
. No word yet on whether he will debut as a babyface or a heel.

Former TNA stars Kaval and Lance Hoyt are rumored to be on the cusp of promoting to the full time roster. WWE insiders have suggested that Kaval may enter into a program with Rey Mysterio as soon as he is done with Batista, whilst Hoyt would likely debut through ECW to better establish him before pushing him on to a frontline show.
