Daniel Mortimer signs new two-year contract with Parramatta Eels

BOOM five-eighth Daniel Mortimer has today signed a new two-year contract with the Parramatta Eels worth an estimated $500,000.

The Eels rookie knocked back a massive offer from the Bulldogs, the club where his father Peter and uncles Steve and Chris won premierships.

Parramatta will announce Mortimer's signing at a press conference later this morning in a huge boost for the club before Friday night's blockbuster season opener against the Dragons.

Mortimer is so highly thought of in the game that he has been signed by Channel Nine's Footy Show, after less than one season of first grade football.

More details will be available later today.

Mortimer spent the weekend with Chris, his cousin Ned and brother Tim on the family farm in Wagga Wagga as he wrestled with his decision.

Chris said his nephew had given no indication over the weekend about his future - and didn't even raise it with him - but insisted that the Mortimers' great tradition at the Bulldogs should not sway him.

"The Mortimer name should come into it at all - it should not be a factor," he said. "That was 20 years ago. We had a great association with the Bulldogs, but those times have passed.

"My allegiances will always lie with Canterbury, but his best option seems to be at Parramatta. He's struck the right chord there.

"We didn't even talk about it when he was down here.

"We sat up on the hill at the farm, and had a few beers, but he never brought it up."

Heres hoping the $500,000 has plenty of incentives included..... good job by management. On to Mateo and Keating.

Over the years, I have lived this scene many a time - great place to think things over!

Boom Eels playmaker Daniel Mortimer is set to announce he has rejected an offer from the Bulldogs to stay at Parramatta.
Mortimer and Eels chief executive Paul Osborne will front a press conference this morning at Parramatta Town Hall where details of the deal are expected to be outlined.
It is understood that Mortimer has re-signed for a further two seasons, with a one year option in his favour after that, committing him to Parramatta until at least the end of 2012.

Good news and perhaps the best part of this deal is that we didn't pay overs for him, sure he has some talent but he's really only played half a season

I wonder what the massive offer from the Doggies was, massive to me suggests more than $250K a year, but then again its just paper talk.

The Bears have made him their main target. Why didn't the Eeeels sign him for a longer period? What will happen in 2013 when he is just hitting his straps.
What about Wehbe...I hear the Dogs are after him? He is a talent...Worry worry worry
