VILLASANTI FIT TO TACKLE FORMER TEAM

After coming through a strenuous fitness test, which was conducted prior to Friday morning’s final training run, former international front rower Richard Villasanti has been included in the Sharks NRL squad for Saturday night’s clash against the New Zealand Warriors.

Villasanti, who has played three games in the Premier League for the Sharks since joining the club mid-season, has overcome a niggling knee problem and was given the green light by Sharks medical staff and will be fit to take on his former club.
“I’m good to go. I got through a fitness test this morning and I’m definitely looking forward to the game,” Villasanti said.
After languishing in the local Auckland BarterCard Cup competition during the early part of 2006, the Sharks threw Villasanti a lifeline and after three weeks of building his match fitness to the necessary level, the Sharks have given him his chance in the top grade.
“He has earned his place with a couple of very good performances in the Premier League,” Sharks coach Stuart Raper said.
Hutch Maiava will make way for Villasanti and will turn out for the Sharks Premier League team.
“We want to get Hutch plenty of game time and to try to improve his fitness levels,” Raper explained. “And playing Premier League will enable him to do that.”
The Sharks will need to be near their best if they hope to beat a New Zealand team full of confidence after steamrolling the Wests Tigers last week.
Brett Kimmorley, solid in his comeback match against the Bulldogs, should be better for last week’s run, while Paul Gallen will be keen to continue his impressive form to further push his State of Origin claims. With the thumb injury to Cowboys Luke O’Donnell there could be a vacancy in the NSW forward pack for game two of the Origin series.
Nigel Vagana also returns to the Sharks side after missing the Bulldogs match with an eye injury.
The Sharks were successful in winning the only match between the two teams in 2005, coming out on top 28-24 in a match played at Members Equity Stadium in Perth.
The Sharks v Warriors clash kicks off at Toyota Park at 7.30pm. Premier League, which gets underway at 5.30pm, sees the Sharks play the St Mary’s-Penrith Cougars, while the Jersey Flegg Sharks take on the Wests Magpies in a match scheduled to begin at 4.00pm. Gates to Toyota Park open at 3.45pm.
Ben Cummins will referee the NRL match.
