Nagas keen to help Raiders

Daniel MacDonald, Canberra Times | April 8, 2008 - 11:37AM

Former Test winger and Raiders great Ken Nagas would join the Canberra Raiders' coaching ranks next year if approached by incoming coach David Furner.
Nagas, 34, yesterday told The Canberra Times he was a firm believer in "earning your stripes" but wouldn't hesitate to sign up if he was given the chance to help coach an NRL team.
"These things don't come up everyday," the current Raiders under-20 assistant coach said. "I don't want to get ahead of myself but if anyone gets that opportunity to get offered that position I think they would take it."
Nagas, in his second year as an assistant coach, works part time under Tony Adam with the under-20s while juggling a career in the police force.
Adam said Nagas's understanding of the sport would be perfect for a coaching career.
"His footy brain is great to have and his calmness and knowledge of the game is a great asset," Adam said.
Nagas, a Lake Ginninderra High School graduate, made his first-grade debut for the Raiders in 1992 and played 142 games before injury forced his retirement in 2002. He lined up alongside Furner at the club and for NSW and said he had no doubt his former teammate would do a good job taking over from Neil Henry as coach.
"He's done a lot of hard work with the club," Nagas said. "Just being around him as a friend, I congratulated him. He's very down to earth, he knows the players and the club really well and I have no doubt he will do an excellent job there.
"If he came and asked me [to coach with him] I'd love to.
"I'd love to go further. I'm a big believer in earning my stripes but obviously down the track I would love to be [an NRL coach].
"I'm just biding my time at the moment though, I have got a good combination going with Tony at the moment and we're all enjoying it."
Adam said he was still a couple of years away from throwing his hat into the ring for a possible coaching position in the NRL.
"There is lots of pressure surrounding them [coaches] but I think that it's something every coach aspires to down the track," Adam said.

He's the kind of person who could slot into a role as a trainer, or something of that nature.

Probably too raw for any kind of proper coaching position, but definitely as a trainer.

Good stuff.

Bloody hell..... didn't realise he was so young when he retired.

Yeah it was his knee. He had all kinds of experimental surgery on it but he could never get it right.

He made a comeback...3 years ago? When we were really stuffed through injury and stuff. He lasted about a week.

Yeah it was extremely sad that Kenny had to retire so young. One of the greatest wingers of the modern era, he should of played more rep games.
