The off and on-field achievements of retired Eels legend Nathan Cayless were recognised last night when he was presented with the Key to the City, by Parramatta City Council Lord Mayor, Cr John Chedid at the Parramatta Eels season launch.
Cr Chedid said the former Eels captain was a worthy recipient not only due to his impressive sporting achievements, but also ongoing efforts with local community and charity groups.
“At our Council Meeting on Monday night, Councillors unanimously resolved to honour Nathan’s achievements and commitment to the City of Parramatta with this accolade,” said Cr Chedid.
“Nathan has been a champion of Parramatta and it’s important for the City to recognise the contribution he has made over many years of competition at the highest level.
“A Key to the City is an exclusive token of appreciation from the City of Parramatta and it’s not bestowed lightly,” said Cr Chedid. “Only in very special circumstances is the Key to the City presented to an individual. It’s the most prestige accolade a resident can receive from Council,”
Nathan Cayless, who retired at the end of last season, is a former captain of New Zealand, having notched up 38 tests for the Kiwis. He captained the Parramatta Eels for 14 seasons and turned out in the blue and gold 259 times during an illustrious first grade career. He currently holds the record for the most games as captain of any team in the NRL.
Along with an impressive sporting resume, Nathan also has a commitment to charity and helping disadvantaged communities.
“Nathan has a strong track-record of working with charities and organisations aimed at helping young people who are disadvantaged,” said Clr Chedid. “He has been appointed as ‘Patron’ of the Ronald McDonald House Charities. In this capacity, he is an ambassador and spokesperson for the charity, and makes time to visit children who are housed in the facility.
“Nathan is a humble man who has never forgotten his grass roots, and his journey from Parramatta Marist High School football through to representation at the highest possible level, is an inspiring story,” said Cr Chedid.
“I’d like to thank the Parramatta Eels for allowing Council to make this special presentation to Nathan at their season launch, and I wish the team all the best for the upcoming season.”
Photos from the presentation are available on Council’s website at www.parracity.nsw.gov.au as well as Council’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/parramattacitycouncil.
