NSW teams
Sydney Kings
West Sydney Wildcats
Woolongong Hawks
Hunter Pirates

QLD teams
Brisbane Bullets
Townsville Crocs
Cairns Taipans

VIC teams
Victoria Giants
Melbourne Tigers

SA
Adelaide 36ers

WA
Perth Wildcats

NZ
New Zealand Breakers

Out go the Canberra Cannons, replaced by the New Zealand Breakers (i don't think anyone is shocked by this, its been well known for a while now). What did shock me was the move from 11 teams to 12 with the inclusion of a new expansion team called the Hunter Pirates, I assume to be based in Newcastle. Now Newcastle has had a basketball team in the past and it was pretty much a failure in a lot of respects. Do the NBL think a change of name and a fresh start is going to change the luck of basketball in the City of Newcastle? I'm a sceptic. I think they have be a repeat of the Cairns experiment, with the hope that they will 'come good eventually' and the NBL is willing to let 1 or 2 losing seasons go past in order to get the Pirates afloat (pardon the pun).

Thoughts?

Well I knew about the Pirates but not about the NZ team. Have you got a list of all the squads?

Hunter actually replace Canberra who actually brought the Cannons license and New Zealand Breakers are the new expansion team.

I wonder if some here could tell me more about the NBL.

How much do the players get paid? Is there a salary cap?

There are foreign (American) players, right? Is there a limit on how many a team can have?

New Zealand has a national league as well, presumably smaller than Australia's. Will the new NZ team in the NBL have the best of the NZ players all on one team? Could the Breakers have all the Tall Blacks, aside from any who play in Europe or the US (Sean Marks), on their team?

Yeah there is, im pretty sure is $700,000 or $750,0000.

Basically you can have 2 imports (Non AUS - NZ) per NBL roster, but you finsh second last and last, you are able to have 3 (Im pretty sure this is still allowed) I doubt that clubs could afford it, but i think the option is still there.

Their roster is
Paora Winitana Grd - TALL BLACK
Pero Cameron Fwd - TALL BLACK
Brad Williams Fwd
Phill Jones Grd - TALL BLACK
Aaron Olson Grd
Dillon Boucher Fwd - TALL BLACK
Ben Melmeth Ctr
Paul Henare Grd - TALL BLACK
Blake Truslove F/C
Casey Frank - IMPORT

5 Tall Blacks in the Breakers squad.

*Pero Cameron was selected in the All World 5 at Last Years World Champs (Best 5 players in the tourney)

I hope this helps

So the Breakers would come in as quite a strong team, wouldn't they? Would they be one of the favourites right away?

Well, the NBL tips off tonight with games between the Breakers and Adelaide, Hunter and Melbourne, and Townsville and Cairns (GO you Taipans!!!). On Friday night, Melbourne plays Brisbane, whilst Cairns hosts the Breakers.

Personally I've never been a huge basketball fan but have taken an interest in the Taipans when they've been winning (which is more and more as the season goes on.

Current betting for the NBL championship:

$3.30 - Sydney Kings
$6.00 - Wollongong Hawks
$7.00 - Brisbane Bullets    :?:
$8.00 - Townsville Crocodiles
$8.50 - New Zealand Breakers
$9.00 - Perth Wildcats
$12.00 - Melbourne Tigers
$12.00 - West Sydney Razorbacks
$15.00 - Victoria Giants
$17.00 - Adelaide 36ers
$26.00 - Cairns Taipans :D :D :D :D :D
$201.00 - Hunter Pirates

Tonight's games:

$1.25 - New Zealand Breakers
$3.85 - Adelaide 36ers

$1.38 - Townsville Crocodiles
$3.00 - Cairns Taipans

$4.05 - Hunter Pirates
$1.23 - Melbourne Tigers
