i think it looks a hell of a lot better now than what it used to, that bit of black wood should never have been fitted IMO, I like to be able to see the valves working.

Very nice mod. I agree it looks better with the Tube showing.

The 5150 worked with that black backing because of the '5150' nice and large in the centre. Do you know if there is much difference between the 5150 and 6505? The 5150 has a great reputation for a crisp crunch, but it lacks a bit on the clean.

What is your experience with the 6505?

When EVH left the peavey camp a few years ago, he took the name 5150 with him, but the patent for the amp remained with Peavey, they came out in 05 to celebrate the 40 years of peavey (65-05). The amps are exactly the same i believe. They are great with the high gain stuff, you are right, the clean is a little lacking but throw in a boss super chrous and it's decent enough. To be honest, I don't really play all that much clean stuff, so it doesnt really bother me if the clean isnt the greatest. I bought this mainly because every other experience with peaveys i have owned has been great and this was in my price range. I would love a mesa or an ENGL, but i don't have that sort of $$$$$ laying around. $3k was all this set up cost, the cab is not the actual proper 6505 cab, it's the XXX cab, a fair bit cheaper, but I have read alot of players (pro and amatuer) prefer this combo of cab and head over the matched quad, the aussie lad from bleeding through uses the same set up. I saved a fair bit of $$$$ by swapping cabs, plus it has a higher wattage rating so maybe it can handle a bit more punishment???

Yeah I knew EVH took the 5150 name with him, and it now appears as the EVH 5150III. Was looking at getting my hand on one of these initially, but figured for a little bit of extra dosh I could pick up the Mesa Triple Rec Cab. I play a lot of heavy stuff, but I love clean sounds as well so i needed a bit more versatility in the amp.

Nice Amp.

I love peavey stuff. All american made and reliable.

I also prefer being able to see the tubes glowing bright.

I just bought a new to me second hand Trace elliot V8 tube amp for my bass.

There really is nothing like a full tube amp- is this your first experience with one? Throw away those boss OD pedals.. lol.

yeah this is my first all tube amp, it took me ages in the shop playing the smaller combo to get the sound i wanted, I was almost ready to give up when i finally figured out how the hell you get a dirty sound out of them. I wanna get a maxon overdrive to throw into the chain, i love the distortion that comes out of it already but i want to add to that the OD, i have seen clips on youtube where a lad uses one on a triple rec and shows the difference with it off and then on, sounds alot tighter on the low end stuff. I will keep the gain as is and just make the signal to the amp "hotter" by using the maxon.
