Below is a brief list of some of our new signings which is causing considerable excitement, especially the size of some of them, lets hope they can display some great efforts.

Sioli Helu: Played with Wellington in the NZ Bartercard Cup competition in
2003, and has represented NZ Residents and NZ Students. A 100 kgs
centre/winger with genuine speed, who has really impressed at training.

James Stosic: another Kiwi, who played in the Queensland Cup competition
this year. A rugged 110 kgs front rower, this former Junior Kiwi has been
described by his manager as being "like Glenn Lazarus with attitude".

Thomas Gemmell: captained the Wellington Bartercard Cup squad in 2003. A 100
kgs back rower/utility player with a reputation as a fearsome enforcer.

Willie Pauhotaua: a speedy, skilful back who plays fullback, centre or wing.
Scored bags of tries in the Bartercard Cup, weighs in at 95 kgs.

Phillip Leuleuai: certainly has strong Rugby League bloodlines, as a member
of the famous Leuleuai footballing clan. Nephew of former Kiwi great James
Leuleuai. A 110 kgs front rower/second rower with both speed and ball
skills, has played in the Bartercard Cup and France in recent seasons.

Nelson Lomi: recommended to Newtown by 1970's Jets second rower Paul Dawson.
Lomi is a Queensland Schoolboys representative, with a solid reputation in
Gold Coast club football. A 98 kgs winger and fullback who is fiercely
determined to succeed in Sydney.

There are more signings planned as the Jets gear up for their best season
since moving up into the NSW Premier League (formerly the NSWRL First
Division competition) back in 2000.

Stosic played for Redcliffe in 2002. Certainly had some size in him but had trouble forcing a regular spot in the Dolphins' Qld Cup side and spent most of the time in reserves.

I don't know where he played in 2003 but it certainly wasn't in the Qld Cup.

Anyway, I hope he goes well for the Jets in 2004.

I guess it would be hard to force a spot in the dolphins side they are the quality team in the QLD comp. Thanks for that Phins.

It's good to see Lomi given another shot. He's a hardworker and although he's not the most talented footy player running around, he's sure to give 100%. For a brief history Lomi came off the bench in first grade game for the Roosters in 1999 and played a further 4 first grade games for the Roosters in 2000. He's also had a stint with Balmain in 2002 and represented Tonga in the 2000 World Cup

Does this mean that by their signing, other clubs are prevented from rubbing their wallets in our faces and stealing them as usual??.

It sounds very good as Newtown have lacked a bit if size in past seasons.

I will believe it when I see them take the field in game one, as have been let down SO MANY times in the past.

Can anyone tell me if their signing prevents backstabbing clubs like Souths stealing them.

They are signed for 2 years so if they are wanted elsewhere we are are in a better position.

2 Years sounds good mate. But you didn't answer the question.

Can other clubs take them?. When you say better position does this mean Newtown is in a better financial position or can they simply say NO your not going.

While we would not stand in the way of a players future we would be in a better position to obtain financial compensation to buy out the contract in reality. By keeping players who show potential it means we would also be in a better position in regard to becoming a feeder club as they would know they can groom players at Newtown and know they would have access to them.
