Rugby league looks to grow Logan heartland
The Queensland Rugby League (QRL) is set to capitalise on Logan's rich football pedigree.
Logan is the heartland of the code in South-East Queensland with many of the sport's stars beginning their careers here, including Australian representatives and NRL players Cameron Smith, Josh Papali and Corey Parker along with dual international Israel Folau.
Keen to expand their footprint further in Logan, QRL Managing Director, Robert Moore says the organisation will work with Logan City Council to build a strategy with a long-term goal for rugby league in the city.
"The future growth in Logan, through new developments, leads us to the assumption that there should be an Intrust Super Cup based in Logan," Robert says.
"How we get to that is our challenge collectively but there is no doubt that a presence in the state-wide program is something we should be aiming for in this region."
The renewed focus on the game in Logan is part of an extensive review to support and enhance player development and pathways across the state.
Robert says the game is in a healthy position to move forward and set itself up for the future after lengthy consultation with stakeholders across the code.
"The objectives of the review were to clarify roles and responsibilities of groups that presently organise and deliver activity to participants aged 13 to 18," he says.
"We've also focused on the current climate, and the need to identify cost-effective approaches, while also removing duplication where possible.
"This is about raising the bar in terms of supporting players, referees and coaches.
"In a year that has been anything but normal, the game remains strong in Logan.
"When you consider the likes of Slacks Creek with a 30 per cent increase in the year that we've had it's quite a remarkable thing to see."
Council continues to support rugby league, and sport in general, across the city.
Recent projects include the Multi-Sport Underwood Park development and the Slacks Creek Rugby League clubhouse. Upcoming projects are planned for Noffke Farm Park for the Waterford Rugby League Football Club. Work is continuing on the gymnasium and PCYC facilities at Slacks Creek.
