New Zealand 2 will deal a massive blow to NZ rugby

if it can be used to attract sporting fixtures to NZ like Origin, a few smart administrators and pollies know how to twist the narrative to bring further sporting fixtures to NZ like NRL matches.
Maybe they could use it. What I'm saying is, there's a case for revenue outside of this particular fund anyway.
But hopefully we get more out of that fund for more one off fixtures.

Nrl should just announce chch and ipsiwch as teams 20 and 21 with staggered entry as we all know they are locks
And miss the opportunity to milk money out of government?? Nah.
The negotiating will start after the Wahs play in Christchurch.

NZ2 - 2030
Ipswich - 2032
Adelaide - 2036

^ What I'd like to see. Then pause expansion until a Melbourne 2 or Hawaii or Fiji NRL side make sense.
That makes a lot of sense, though if Adelaide doesn’t get some decent groundwork and NZ continues to grow fan engagement and juniors it may be a decision between Adelaide & NZ 3.

Another factor in the mix is if PNG's subsidies dry up, and whether they can move to become a self sustaining club without that taxpayer support. If they hit the wall, that could open up another spot.

I think those should and will be the next 3 teams but the timeline will completely depend on how Perth and PNG change the current outlook. That's a lot of expansion you're talking about and having the players and money isn't a sure thing.

I'm not against it but after team 20, we should be putting expansion on the self for 10 years imo.
After team 20, I like us to focus on getting Europe going better.

Once Perth is established then it open the way for Adelaide (last fumbler state)

Same for Christchurch and then Wellington

And png then Fiji

Wouldn’t surprise me to sees Fiji / Pacifica side get similar funding that png got when that runs out

Money won’t be holding back expansion as tv companies will fund new clubs and time slots

Player pool will and that is where png will have to cover it and maybe nz

3 new teams means at least 100 more players needed

Plus the new interchange rules is going to thin depth as well

When png is a success remember me lol

Yes I’m expecting more outreach to nz and Adelaide over the next 5-10 years. Need to lay some roots there after the bears come in, ie hosting double headers at Adelaide oval and one off games at Hindmarsh stadium on the regular. Plus more grassroots stuff.

But I think the nrl focus in the next few years will rightly be making sure Perth and PNG succeed, but dropping a game or two in Adelaide is a no brainer.

Adding Adelaide and Ipswich makes the nrl have a more national reach than the afl which be a big deal. Sure they have Tasmania by then but nrl teams will be better concentrated around higher population areas. Plus we’d also have a solid foothold in nz and png on top of that. Shows how successful the nrl can become while the afl still struggle to make gc and gws relevant after 15 years.

Nz stumping up for origin is a positive sign they are investing in sports tourism. It may see them more willing to stump up cash to get a Christchurch team?

Adelaide is no hope. Despite the strength of the game, the economy and the size perth still had to accept an arranged Sydney marriage and stump up $100mill to join the party. Short of SA getting a RL mad premier and a change of heart at nrlhq it seems highly unlikely Adelaide will be considered for many many years to come.

It’s not the end of the world not having a team in Adelaide …yet…

Other places ahead of them …..

Maybe by 2040

If Perth bears are successful, getting good crowds and some on field success, nz2 comes in, and regular games held at Adelaide… the tides will change. There will be growing fomo from Adelaide that they’re not part of this expanded and rejuvenated pacific wide competition. They will want a piece of the action.

Adelaide is a decade or two away with other teams to come first and some dependencies like Perth going well. But it’s a good possibility for sure.

That doesn’t matter. If pollies want to make it work they’ll find a way bro. Attempting to hold pollies to their own rules is a waste of time.

although reading through those for points provided. I can’t see why it wouldn’t be eligible.
We've had a team in the NRL for 30 years, you really think they'll allow NRL matches to be a major event? That would just open it up to NZR putting their hand in the jar for test matches/Super etc.

Also, this section will be hard to justify from an NRL point of view:
  • Prove a clear need for government investment. Large profits or surpluses post event may need a reasonable proportion of Major Event Fund investment to be returned to the government.
The NRL might just be one of the most profitable sports leagues on the planet and already has bi-weekly games in NZ. I think they'll struggle to prove a clear need for investment. Although, TBF, I would have thought Origin wouldn't meet that criteria either.

See my link above, it's a major events fund that has been around for 20 years (for example, the 2017 RLWC got funding). Despite @Ashburn confidence above I don't think this fund will impact whether any local or national govt will contribute to an NRL team.

Anyway, I thought this was announced back in October last year? Why is being reported in the last couple of days as breaking news?

It probably won’t be used to get more nrl games but in general places like Darwin pay around 300k so it’s not a lot of money

For league maybe magic, tests or the final of the pacific cup

So for 20 years you’ve argued nrl needs a national comp to match the afl tv deal but your idea of national was just Perth ?

People were saying the same thing about Perth not too long ago.
If they didn’t have the bears attached to them then adding them before nz2 was stupid

We’ve seen how they’ve struggled for players and how the local media treats them as outcasts

It’s the only reason why they getting positive media is the bears connection

I would’ve preferred central coast bears coming instead and Perth waiting behind chch and Ipswich
