New Zealand 2 will deal a massive blow to NZ rugby

Neither do I, but what I said appears to be what's shaping-up.

I'd love to be wrong & see NZ 2 soon after Perth & PNG - but I suspect the NRL may want a period of about 5 years for those two teams to "bed in" and have player/coaching/refereeing depth grow to accommodate them.
Because of the lack of ambition with regards to expansion prior to St Peter becoming our Patron Saint, there was a backlog that we are feeling the effects of now.

E.g.

2022 was about 20 years overdue for Brisbane 2

2027 is about 15 years overdue for Perth

2033 is about 8 years overdue as NZ is ripe for a second side now

Once we get through those, Ipswich and Adelaide will probably be about right to go.

Highest in the league and helped grow wellingtons crowds too

The nrl is making a huge error by not locking in nz2

If an insignificant sport like a league can manage two nz teams when their total tv deal is 20 million pa the nrl can manage two nz teams just from its nz tv deal of 32 milll pa

Yeah, we paid a huge price for having timid & extremely conservative leadership for 20 years- not to mention an ownership/governance structure that had a strong interest in preserving the status quo- particularly with Newscorp's keen interest in keeping the Broncos as "the only show in town".

The NRL should make a couple of Australian based teams take their “home” games to New Zealand like Christchurch, wellington and Dunedin etc.

3 on The road games per season for 5 years should be plenty until the process for team #20 is concluded.

This used to happen back 10-15 yrs ago …

Teams don’t want to give up a home field advantage now and go to a place that will be actively supporting the opposition ….. and I think it would be unfair if only a few teams were “made by the NRL” to do so …it’s a different story going to Perth or Adelaide where it should be pretty neutral/even support ..

The Warriors have also become a much bigger draw in Australia as the away team post covid, so it’s a game that at lot of teams want to retain

The Wanderers had around 18k crowd average in 2016/17. Now its about 9k.

When the stadium is finished and games are being sold out there it won’t be long till they get a team

The stadium and crowds will seal the deal

“Interest in rugby league in the South Island has reportedly doubled since 2022, and a study shows that a NRL franchise in Christchurch would return a $3 million profit from its first year.”

The Gemba reports showed a South Island NRL team would generate up to $29m a year to the NRL in additional broadcast revenue, deliver a viewership base of 259,000 and a potential market of 282,000 people in the South Island, including 36,000 “converted rugby union fans’’.

It could expect a membership base of 10,600 and an average game attendance of 8600 - both figures would be the lowest of existing NRL clubs (the Brisbane Broncos lead with 40,200 members).“

I can't see crowds of 8600 sealing the deal.

There's a lot to take out of that but one thing is certain. Those membership numbers and crowd numbers are bs . Double both is around right and that's if they're travelling badly.

The bids need to come together and get government support. And I think that might be why the NRL kept their powder dry. The NRL seems to want to get bids at their absolute best and while there's fractured bidding and no government support- there's obviously room to improve.

Yeh but if they can see the club making a 3 million profit on such lower membership and crowd numbers then imagine what the real figures will show in terms of profit

I think they set those numbers low to show it works no matter what

Their crowds will be 15 to 30k

Memberships depends if they are lazy like the warriors or not

Wahs numbers aren’t great

Let’s all be honest …NZ2 will have plenty of time to get their act together …Team 20 most likely won’t be happening until the TV deal after the next … so 2033 at the earliest … the NRL have two difficult projects that they are taking on at the same which will keep their hands full in the medium term…

Seems to be the case. It is disappointing but Christchurch is going anywhere, it's population is only increasing along with RL following. In 8 years it'll storm out of the blocks.

Wait tilll Anzac game next year in that stadium the talk will ramp up

And discussions will be held shortly about the nz tv rights with sky or dazn

If they are providing more money for a second team then that will push their start date up

It’s disappointing with the way the game is going over there … but probably prudent considering the focus on the other two that will be required … PNG will probably go down as the most difficult sports expansion in Australian sporting history to date…by some margin

The Warriors better find a way to win one before Nz2 come in , as I wouldn’t be surprised that they get shown up before too long …

nah .. this is a third world country where they are setting up unique infrastructure projects that I’m assuming they have limited expertise in, and in addition trying to set up a pathways system across a country comprised of terrible local transport and potential cultural issues that Australia doesn’t have …

In addition they have to get it done in 30 months
