New Zealand 2 will deal a massive blow to NZ rugby

The best option for New Zealand over the next 10 years is a) for the Christchurch local government to strike a deal with Canterbury Bulldogs to play games at their new stadium when it's built and b) get Sydney teams to take one home game to Wellington or Auckland on Friday night.

No the best option is for the NRL to spend tens of millions across NZ to get the clubs back on their feet so they can produce juniors, long before they ask for bids on a a second team.

You know for all the talk about the Warriors being rubbish, you can't really blame them for the last 3 years. They may have lost Walsh ( I love watching him play but he's not that big a loss considering he's a terrible defensive fullback) but they signed 3 kiwi rep players this year!
Big difference when you don't have covid!
I think the Warriors could be a real surprise packet this year.
If they are playing well back at home during another rubbish SR season... it could deal a blow on its own.
This year marks a lot of change for the Warriors - back to NZ for home games, reserves & age grade running again, new coaching setup - on top of the usual tweaking of the squad with a new season.

I think all of it points to a reset that's much needed.. and there's just enough continuity in the squad & back office from last year that it might not take too long to find their feet... unlike say the Bulldogs where there's a lot of squad, admin AND coaching changes to get functioning together.

Need to get those wonderful kiwi kids which we know they can produce playing for the warriors

For sure More regular NRL season “home” games for Aussie based sides need to be taken to NZ cities/towns as well as the NRL Funding South Island junior teams playing in the jersey flegg, SG Ball and Harold Matthews competitions.

Getting Sydney teams to play in New Zealand is a cheap way of providing New Zealanders with NRL games until the country has the resources to field a second team. If the games are used to promote the local competitions then it can have a positive impact on participation.

This is definitely the way to grow the game across New Zealand. Governments want events at their grounds and kids want to meet professional athletes. If the Sydney clubs are active in the communities they play in then it could have a positive for both parties.

You guys just come on this shit on your own and it means nothing.

The irony in your post is incredible.

Maybe he thinks Peter vlandys is reading this forum and will be impressed by his posts when none of the league fans on here are

just the idea of another nz nrl teams seems to trigger him

the nrl taking over the pacific is inevitable

It's funny you think that that's gonna happen.

Not enough to make a difference. 30 years of it happening and participation is still heading down at a rate of knots. It's happening in Auckland and they already have a team.

‘We have to expand’: Perth, NZ floated as V’landys reveals plans for 18th NRL team

Staff Writers from Fox Sports
March 22nd, 2022 3:16 pm

Australian Rugby League Commission chairman Peter V’Landys told SEN 1170 Breakfast that the competition will look at introducing an 18th side depending on the Dolphins’ success in 2023.

The Dolphins have begun building an impressive squad as they prepare for the 2023 season. But the Dolphins’ addition takes the NRL to 17 teams, which means there’ll be a bye for one team per round next season.

V’Landys conceded that this was a concern and something the competition is looking into.

“Look probably it is (important that we have an even number),” V’Landys said.

“But we just want to see how we go with the Dolphins and to see that there is a sufficient player pool there.

“I think there is, and then we look at possibly going to the 18th team.

“We have to expand, we have to always look towards the future, you can’t just stand still, you need to be proactive and you need to continue the popularity of the game, and if we can make the game national we’ll do so.

“There’s a possibility of Perth or even New Zealand, there’s a lot of possibilities.

“But let’s just see how we go with the Dolphins first, then we can make a decision on an 18th team.”

The addition of the Dolphins will see the NRL push to 26 rounds, extending the competition to by another week.

“It has to stack up with a business case, what the Dolphins did is it stacked up,” he explained.

“We don’t have to pay tens of millions having that 17th team, in actual fact we generated substantial new revenue from broadcast to have that 17th team.

“So it pays for itself without harming any of the other clubs, so if we go for the 18th team, it has to be important that it actually brings benefits.

“We’re not going to do it just for the sake of doing it, it has to have a business case and it has to have substantial outcomes for the game.”

Questions also arose regarding his future as ARLC chairman, but V’Landys said there’s a lot more work to be completed before he steps down in the near future.

Isn’t there supposed to be some sort of goodwill gesture towards NZ by the NRL this coming season in taking more “home” games there after all what the warriors went through during Covid19 for 3 years?

Sounds about right sadly.

Isn't there also an Australia v NZ test match slated to be played in NZ this year also?
Hasn’t been announced but end of season tourney featuring Tonga samoa oz and nz so I’m sure they will get a lot of those tests given test crowds in Australia are very poor

That sounds like a great tournament. Hope Fiji and PNG get invited too.

TBF international crowds in Brisbane draw good numbers and I’m sure if Australia play either Tonga or Samoa in Sydney at the new SFS it would attract a good turnout.

I think whichever nations miss out will tour the uk but not certain

tonga vs anyone at mt smart stadium is a guaranteed sell out

then maybe one day look to Eden park

CommBank in parra is ideal for tests due to capacity and proximity to islanders living in the far west
