They didn't even make the Final last year, pumped by Brisbane. How did the support start in 2024? Sellout, Sellout, lost and lost...Sellout, Sellout..and sold out..2 of those Sellouts were in Christchurch! this isn't dependant on the Warriors success.. they want NRL!

If Another team is announced for NZ in 6 months time.. do you realise just how unstoppable the NRL will be in NZ?
The NRL is the biggest sporting competition in the Pacific and they're on board!
TBF they've had about 10 good years of fan support in 30. This current wavy is similar to their inception years and in 2011-2014. Hopefully they sustain it this time. Only time will tell. Getting more games on NZ FTA is a big step forward.

Sevens shot itself in the foot a bit from an entertainment standpoint by trying to become a legitimate sport.
HK7s was a one off piss up party with actual name players playing, a team with Lomu and Cullen in an open field was mouth watering.
They then expanded to around 10 tournaments, specialised unrecognisable to the general public players, toned down the party aspect (killed Wellington sevens) to appeal to become an Olympic sport.
What was a once a year highlight got massively diluted, I follow Union but sevens is now its own niche sport that I have no idea when it’s on and May catch the odd game by chance.
I’ve done Wellington and Sydney sevens and it was fun enough- once, Warriors in Vegas however is very tempting.
They just held it in Perth. I believe crowds were decent and it sold out on the Sunday (take note NRL!!) at HBF stadium. There were lots of pssed union fans in sombreros in the pubs on the Sat night when I was in Northbridge!

Did you or didn't you say rugby league is bigger than rugby union in Perth?
No I didnt. I said that an NRL club would draw bigger crowds than the Force.
Theres many metrics to measure a sports popularity.

At grassroots Union is more popular than league in WA (12k players v 4k), just as soccer is more popular than league in Qlnd and NSW in participation. But at the top tier NRL is bigger than Super Rugby. I couldnt imagine a Super rugby double header drawing 45k at Optus. Not hard to understand.

I’d argue Warriors have one of the more hardy fan bases and are well supported, even in games I go to in Aus there’s usually a decent away crowd.
They’ve always been the number 1 provincial team in NZ
Was only really near the end of covid where even long term fans had pretty much had enough.
I used to work for one of the big sports apparel brands and the were desperate to get their hands on the Warriors (who were with Canterbury at the time) as they were consistently at or very near the top of merch sales in the nrl.

You're using participation rates for soccer as the crux of your argument?

Kids play soccer because it's far safer than rugby league and rugby union. They're scared of getting tackled by a bigger kid.

The kids who play rugby union and rugby league have a completely different mentality than the ones who play soccer. They're not afraid of getting tackled and enjoy the contact.

Foce were getting over 25k to their games at Subiaco in the late 00s.

No Im showing there are many metrics to measuring popualarity of a sport. Grassroots participation rates are not necessarily reflective of top tier professional sports following.
If it was soccer, basketball and netball would have by far the biggest and wealthiest professional comps in the country!

Thats only part of the reason, its also suited to all body types and abilities, is easier to play if theres just a few of you, can be easily played in the school yard and is the biggest professional sport in the world with global superstars.

Occasionally, which again is why its nonsense to suggest the Force of today has any relevance what so ever to how an NRL club will go, or that no-one in Perth follows other sports other than AFL, which may also have been one of your BS claims in the past?

So Rugby Union is twice the size of League in Perth? And 7k crowds...
Could it be that 1: it's hard to gain traction in an AFL heartland and 2: if your performances are sub par, there's a massive drop off in support...

If a Perth team sits around the bottom, I actually expect 7k crowds.. I'm ok with that but that's the reality.

In participation numbers (touch aside) they are 3 times the size of RL. Soccer is 20 times the size of Rl in Perth and gets 7k crowds. Netball is 20 times the size of RL in Perth and gets 2k crowds. Like I said participation does not usually = Prof sports club fanbase. If it did soccer, basketball and netball would be the 3 biggest professional comps in Australia.

Could it be that people choose to play amateur sport for a different reason than they choose to watch professional sport?

Yep, same for nearly every team in every sport, thats just the nature of prof sport. Serve up crap week after week and people are less inclined to pay for it.

Id expect 12k crowds at the bottom, as long as we werent at the bottom for years and years.

7k is a very pessimistic outlook. Biased I'd say

Super Rugby a joke and team been kicked out
A league a joke
AFL well run
30 years ago in a time of war

or lets take the evidence in front of us on how NRL is doing with crowds in Perth and make an informed judgement

Brings back memories of the hugely successful expanded world club challenge RL in 1997
for me it’s not the fact that this club tournament might be successful or not but more the fact that it’s going to be held in 4 year cycles like a football or rugby union World Cup.

this isn’t going to save super rugby if it’s only played once every 4 years.
