PVL was in Christchurch over the weekend, I would think this post by Kea is positive.i heard PVL was not expecting RL to be as strong as it was in Christchurch, on field and business interest

This idea that V`Landys went to Christchurch and was surprised by the interest in Rugby League both on and off the field is frankly laughable. It`s just your classic V`Landys bite grab for the media.
To be perfectly honest if the interest was that real off the field money wouldn`t have been a prob for the bids.
I`m a fan of V`Landys, he gets things done, but best not to believe his every utterance.

I think people are taking too much out of the whole " the bids weren't good enough " talk. It's just a negotiating ploy to squeeze the best out of the bids.

Latest interview from Moffett…

Says they will “consider” to bid again ..and if they do they will “address” the license fee …

I’m a little skeptical about this bid …also would prefer the Orcas name..

I like the Orcas name but it’s attached to the Wellington province, Orca will frequent the waters around the Harbour.
Kea is a much more uniquely South Island animal that lives in the Southern Alos that run the spine of the South Island so has more attachment to the area

I’m sure they will do the market research on the name … just giving my personal preference ..but there was a bid this time around known as the Southern Orcas ?

Im hoping they aren’t saving Orcas for the Wellington team … that’s likely decades away if Christchurch gets the second NZ team in the near future

It’s also likely that Wellington people will support this new team over the hated city of Aucklands team right?

I can't talk for other Wellington rugby league fans, but for me it depends on the level of engagement each team has with us.

Too often in the past, Wellington sports teams have been beaten by Christchurch/Canterbury province teams - especially in rugby & cricket - most often THEY are winners while we're the 'lovable losers'.

If a Christchurch-based NRL club is especially South Island focused, I can't see me moving my support from the Warriors.. and if they're Christchurch with a game or two in Dunedin, absolutely NO.

However if they want to position themselves as a "New Zealand outside of Auckland" team, and take a game each year to Wellington then I could be swayed.

Most likely, the Christchurch-based club plays a game or two per season in Dunedin & the Warriors take a game each year to Wellington & MAYBE one to another location (Hamilton? Rotorua?).. and we get a North-South split, even though the population ratio is something like 3:1 North Island (4 Mil in the north, 1.3 mil in the south roughly), which a 3rd NZ NRL club based in the lower North Island would balance.

“Something like”…. ? its only around a million people on the South Island right?

It would be helpful to the NRL and the new team if NZ2 could get Wellington behind them to at least try to close the gap …this would mean playing at least 1 game a year there I would assume

Is the rivalry between the two islands a ”big deal “ in NZ? Doesnt seem anything like the rivalry between the States over here ... but I’m a long way away …I also realise that you can’t manufacture this ”hatred” regardless of how much money or effort you put in …

Lower population hasn’t stopped the crusaders dominating super rugby

Wellington stadium is crap

They should play zero games there

I dont care what happens in Union and I doubt you do either…although there are other teams in NZ as well diluting any one teams population dominance

Having a more even population split between the two teams sounds like a much more favourable outcome then a 4m/ 1m split

Southern Ocra and South Island Kea are two different bids. Keas are well populated in the SI, in the Alpine area and are shits to cars if they’re left alone unsupervised in ski areas, but are loved. Orcas frequent Pt Nicholson, Wellington Harbour. The original Wellington NRL bid circa 1992 was the Wellington Dolphins.
Christchurch has a new fancy stadium, Wellington has a shitty cake tin

Best not to dilute the area it represents

Assuming Dunedin gets 2 games then little room for Wellington to get any games

It would be crazy to play at Wellington and not Dunedin

It’s not crazy at all … its a 550k population base versus 150k in Dunedin …

do you want NZ2 to be another Gold Coast Titans to the Brisbane Broncos…?

I doubt that many NI fans will switch from the Warriors to a SI team. There's more of a sport (as opposed to real) hatred than you think between NI and Canterbury.

And I know there is a hatred of Auckland by everyone else …

The NZ A League teams seem to be concentrating pretty exclusively on the Auckland - Wellington wider rivalry … they don’t seem to care much about rivalries with the Aussie teams ..

I don't really think the Warriors are seen as an Auckland team these days as they've been around on their own for 30 odd years. No reason for a fan from Taupo to switch to a SI team from the Warriors when they dislike both Chch and Auckland.

TBF, if the SI team genuinely support NZ talent, and don't fill up the team with Oz journeymen like the Warriors have too often in the past then I might switch, but I'd feel dirty about it the whole time. ;)
