Newcastle Knights Board update
Newcastle Knights | September 1 2017 5:15PM

The nib Newcastle Knights wish to acknowledge the Club's departing Board of directors, who have stood down as part of the transition process to full ownership by The Wests Group.

After assuming control of the Knights, the NRL appointed a seven-person Board in November of 2014.The Board comprised of Chair Brian McGuigan as well as John Quayle, Mark Fitzgibbon, Eileen Doyle, Katie Brassil, Peter Shear and Philip Gardner.

The Board developed and oversaw the Club's 2015-2017 Strategic Plan, which delivered a number of key achievements including securing a new and stable long-term ownership model for the Club.

The Board were influential in the Centre of Excellence project for the community and oversaw record investment into the Club's junior development and pathway programs.

The Board also improved the financial position of the Club with a profit forecast for 2018 and significantly enhanced governance and risk management frameworks and procedures.

"We wish to thank Brian, John, Mark, Eileen, Katie and Peter for their valuable contribution to the Club," CEO Matt Gidley said.

"There is no doubt they each leave the Club far better and stronger for their influence and involvement as a board member."

An interim board of Tony Crawford (NRL) and Philip Gardner (The Wests Group) will be in place from September 1 until November 1. The Wests Group will appoint their own board following the official takeover on November 1.

Wish Quayle was still involved. True rugby league man and clearly "got" what Newcastle and the Knights are about.

In all seriousness, forgetting the magic beans man, the appointed board has done a very good job under their charter and considering what they inherited...apart from Quayle, they were largely appointed for their business acumen and have certainly delivered a club in a much better financial position and governance structures.
