After all the injuries I cant really blame Mullen for rolling the dice. Probably figured he didn't have long left anyway so if he has a chance at extending his career why not. He probably has a good idea of how many guys get away with it.

^Yeah it was the same when Anderson Silva snapped his leg clean in half and was close to 40 years old. I couldn't blame him for getting on the juice to try and overcome such a horrific injury.

NRL confirms Jarrod Mullen tested positive to a secound test.

"The rugby league career of Newcastle star Jarrod Mullen is all but over after confirmation of a second positive test to a banned anabolic steroid.

The NRL confirmed on Tuesday it had been informed by the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Agency that Mullen's B-sample tested positive to steroid Drostanolone.

The Knights playmaker has now been issued with a Notice of Alleged Anti-Doping Rule Violation and is looking at a maximum four-year ban, all but ending the 29-year-old's career.

Mullen has an opportunity to appeal the latest developments, however it seems it is over for the former NSW State of Origin representative.

"We obviously remain disappointed with what has transpired but we will continue to respect the process and monitor Jarrod's welfare," Knights CEO Matt Gidley said in a statement.

Mullen had been provisionally suspended by the governing body since mid-January after a pre-season test came back positive late last year.

The Knights playmaker had been battling a series of hamstring injuries in recent seasons and again suffered a re-tear during a training session in November.

NRL CEO Todd Greenberg told AAP last month he was saddened by Mullen's drugs saga.

""Anyone who loses a career, it's disappointing for them, and ultimately disappointing for the game. But there are always consequences for poor decisions," Greenberg said.

"We do a huge amount of education and players need to make good choices and when they don't and they take risks, there are massive consequences."

With Mullen under contract until the end of next season, a likely termination could open a reported $750,000 on the Knights' salary cap to spend on bolstering their roster.

Mullen has played 211 games for the Knights since making his debut for the club in 2005, representing the Blues on one occasion."

so 22 week ban like Howe, O'Davis, Richards or 11 weeks like Mad Dog?

They only got those penalties as when they were tested they were under the then ARL's Drug Testing policy which only permitted a maximum 22 week ban. Mullen will be dealt with under the current policy which is compliant with WADA's standards. Hence Mullen will be given a very substantial ban.

It's officially over for Jarrod Mullen, banned for four years.

"Jarrod Mullen's NRL career appears to be effectively over as the NRL Anti-Doping Tribunal handed the Newcastle halfback a four-year suspension for his use of illicit substances.

Mullen was found guilty of the use of the prohibited substance Drostanolone and the presence of the prohibited substance Drostanolone, which is an anabolic steroid.

The 30-year-old failed a drug test in January 2017 and then a B-sample tested positive in February, giving him little chance of proving his innocence.

Mullen's suspension expires on 16 January, 2021, meaning he will be 33 years of age and unlikely to make an NRL return.

He has 21 days to appeal the ruling to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The Knights are still paying out his $550,000 a year contract which extends to 2018, although that is now set to change and would free up some much needed salary cap space next season for the struggling club."

Surely Newcastle can free up his salary for use in 2017, and pinch one of the many unwanted players languishing on the bench/ in reserves this year

Pretty much a positive for Newcastle really. Mullen has taken up so much cap space for no results and now they can completely move forward from him.

I don't think this comes as a surprise. He will definitely fall into the 'what could have been' category.
