Newcastle or Jim Beam comp Which is stronger???

The Newcastle comp has always been strong but now I believe it is even stronger again with many new signings like ex NRL or Super Laague players.
Some great players from the bush come down to play aswell.

The Jim Beam Cup is very strong as well with many players trying to make it in the NRL through this comp. With many ex NRL players this too makes it a very strong comp.

Overall I would think the Newcastle comp is in front with week in week out tough games and so much talent filtering into it.

Being from Sydney and never having seen any games from the Newcastle competition, it would be difficult for me to say whether it is stronger than the Jim Beam Cup.

On one level I doubt Newcastle would be stronger, though the way in which the Central Coast teams have fled from the JBC (hardly enamoured with the standard and the restrictive player qualification rules, apparently - though it could also be a money issue) might suggest its not up to scratch.

Has anyone seen games from both JBC and Newcastle?

I have not seen games from the Newcastle competition but in a rep game last year a understrength Jim Beam Cup team, without players from the Windsor Wolves and Sydney Bulls, defeated a combined NSW Country team comfortably!

The comp has become smaller this year but this should serve to only strengthen the quality of the competition as Ourimbah and Woy Woy had been cellar dwellers for the first 2 years of the comp!

Jim Beam Cup would be stronger. There are a lot of players in Jim Beam Cup who have played in Premier League or Jersey Flegg.

Also there are quite a few players in Premier League who have previously played in Jim Beam Cup.

Last year Newcastle rep side beat Central Coast rep side including the Jim Beam cup players 66-10.

As for quality of players in each team. Here is a list of players in the Macquarie Scorpions (Newcastle team) for 2006. Macquarie finished 5th last season.

1. Robbie O'Davis - Knights, QLD and Aus
2. Chris Swann - South Sydney
3. Julian Bailey - Newcastle Knights, Roosters and Super League in England
4. Jay Bolton - Newcastle Knights and Eagles/Bears
5. Shay Livermore - Knights
6. Jacob Briggs - Knights and Balmain
7. Scott Briggs - Canberra Raiders
8. Marc Reid - Knights
9. Russell Richards - Knights
10. Daniel Quinn - Knights
11. David Cox - Knights
12. Chris Nolan - Knights
13. Ryan Johnson - Jim Beam cup

Plenty of players from NRL clubs.
Its a very close comp in Newcastle and not many sides get beat by over 20 anymore.

The Metropolitan Cup (and before it the NSWRL 2nd Division) was clearly considered the top non-NSWRL/ARL Premiership competition in NSW contested by distinct clubs. With the advent of stand-alone clubs in the Premier League (i.e. as the old Reserve Grade became a more distinct competition) the status of the JBC has become a lot less clearer.

With the inclusion of the Central Coast clubs the NSWRL clearly had ambitions to make the JBC a state-wide competition and get more of the state's cashed-up leagues clubs investing in high-class senior football and player development. I've heard that one of the major problems with the Central Coast clubs was that they didn't like the restrictions on player eligibility (how many of the players listed in the Macquarie team would be able to play in the JBC?) and as a result thought the standard suffered.

For me this thread suggests that we really need to coax clubs like the strongest Newcastle and Central Coast clubs to be involved in a strong state-wide competition below the Premier League (or including these clubs in an expanded Prem League?) and, as a result, pumping funds into boosting RL across the state.

In fact Newcastle beat Central Coast 28-16. The 66-10 score might have been in u/19 where all the decent central coast talent is signed by the sydney clubs. Mono Mal is right a Jim Beam shadow team beat combined country 40-10.

Sorry just checked it then and it was 42 - 16. Check the crlnsw website.
Still a flogging. This was a team that had players from The Entrance who won the year before and I think finished 2nd that year in the Jim Beam Cup.

Entrance finished 4th. Lost semis to Windsor 32-6 and Wenty 44-8. The Big 3 are way above the rest of the comp. Do you know how Entrance went against Wyong on saturday?

Wyong Roos have been playing in the Newcastle competition haven't they? There you go, a direct comparison between the Newie comp and JBC...

Looks like Wyong Roos have a good side for 2006 particularly with Ferris and King (who have both played for Leigh Centurions in the ESL, not to mention NRL clubs).

These players wouldn't qualify for JBC.

The only people that dont qualify for JB is anyone who played NRL in the same season. Ferris was going to be captain coach of Asquith last year but he then signed with an english club instead. You have to balance your points by using using juniors or long term players.

Wenty has just signed 4 players from Balmain and 2 of them played more than 100 games for the Tigers. Also signed Dave Mulhall from Toulouse, France and he played for Auckland Warriors in the past.

Ahhh... Okay, thanks for clarifying the eligibility rules. I was under the (mistaken) impression that if you had played NRL you weren't eligible for JBC - I'm sure I read that somewhere and that CRL sides that had ex-NRL players were worried about losing them (or being unable to sign them) if they entered the JBC.

Are Wenty's ex-Tigers players ex-NRLers or ex-Premier Leaguers? How many ex-full time players are in the JBC?

im pretty sure Aaron Mercer has played first grade for Wests.....Adam Tippett From Sydney Bulls remains one of the competitions best players, and he used to play halfback for Balmain, also for the Bulls Damien Mostyn used to play for Cronulla, and Shane Shackleton from the Bulls previously is now in PL for the roosters, thats just a handful

Wyong won the game by like 8 points however the Entrance side this year is made mostly of young players after they lost a few players in the off season.

Bulls had Tippett and Azzi who played less than 4 games in NRL (base 10), and Debartolo, Paiyo, Mosytn and Jolly who played 4 or more games (base 15) but then you can get 1 point discount (up to 5) for each year they have played with the club. Bulls could play 4 or maybe 5 at the one time depending on the rest of the team. Generally, back in metro the top 5 teams would each have more than 10 players with 1st grade experience.

Expecting a big year for Shackleton at the Roosters this year.

Entrance were reasonably strong in the first couple years but had no depth last year after losing a lot of players. The Sydney Roosters had Parmatangi, Savage and Carruthers playing every second game at the Entrance last year. If all the Roosters are going to play for newtown and Entrance has lost more players they will do it tough to make the 5.

Wenty got Mark Luland, Leigh Bowman, Justin Bishop and Steve Mowbray from Balmain. I am pretty sure Luland appeared in 1st grade a few years ago but they were all in Premier League but also palyed JB for Woy Woy last year. Balmain would lend 3 to 6 players to Woy Woy most weeks but near the end of the season they got none and were beaten by 60 to 70 points in a couple games. Wests premier league also lent players to Ourimbah over the last two years but their squad has got much weaker so they cant help anyone now.
