Get Joey

By PAUL KENT Rugby League Writer

THE cross-code war for Andrew Johns will intensify this morning as senior NRL stakeholders hold a last-ditch meeting with his manager in a bid to prevent the star pivot signing with the NSW Waratahs.

Details of the meeting emerged last night as the Knights yesterday put forward an expression of interest for rising Melbourne star Matt Orford – an insurance bid, should Johns defect.

As speculation about a switch warmed up, Wallaby Matt Burke threw his support behind the signing of Johns, while England coach Clive Woodward gave the bid his universal approval.

"If it was to happen, I think it would be brilliant," Woodward said.

But Johns remained tight-lipped last night on the issue as he attended a launch party in Sydney for a book by his brother Matt's alter-ego, Reg Reagan.

NRL boss David Gallop has orchestrated the secret meeting, contacting Johns's manager, John Fordham, yesterday. "I was invited, asked would I like to meet with John Hartigan and David Gyngell tomorrow morning and I said absolutely," Fordham said.

Mr Hartigan is the CEO of News Limited, publisher of

The Daily Telegraph and a 50 per cent owner in the NRL, while Gyngell is the CEO of Channel 9, rightsholders for the NRL.

Gyngell might not be able to attend the meeting himself but is expected to be represented by a senior Nine representative.

Fordham said he had no idea what sort of proposal would be put forward.

"David was the one who rang me," he said. "He called me and said would I be agreeable and I don't mind saying that they are the two most important media proprietors in Australia.

"I've got no idea what they want to talk about. I was just asked if I was available to attend a meeting.

"Obviously, they're going to hard sell the rugby league situation but I can't double guess what they're doing."

A tight-lipped Gallop would not reveal what kind of deal would be offered but was insistent any deal would fit within the NRL's strict salary cap guidelines.

The NRL yesterday confirmed that the Knights had been given permission to push forward with a third party agreement, involving a construction company, to top up Johns's offer.

"We have advised the Knights and John Fordham of that today," Gallop said.

This morning's meeting, to be held at a private location, is planned to make Johns aware of his welfare beyond his playing career.

"I am interested in talking to Fordo about not only what is effectively the last few years of Joey's playing career, but the impact of a decision to go to rugby union over his role in our game, post-football," Gallop said.

"Rugby league has got a great track record and, I'm not saying rugby union doesn't, but rugby league has got a great track record of people continuing to be part of the family for a long time into the future."

Fordham met Channel 7 CEO David Leckie last Friday to discuss Johns's future within rugby union.

A Seven spokesman last night confirmed they discussed Seven becoming part of the "consortium" to lure Johns from league to union.

Fordham said Leckie was more interested in Johns as a television talent, saying he believed he was "probably the best of all" on Nine's State of Origin telecast.

Why couldn't the Broncos offer up some kind of consortium for him?

They can under some circumstances. Their method for Lote wasn't approved by the NRL. The Broncos use the same thing for some of their players now.

It really is a different case than Lote -- we're talking about possibly the greatest player ever here -- and the main thrust of this is Johns' television career, commentating and presenting. Lote was in no position to contemplate that at such an early stage in his career.

Not saying I agree with it, though -- I'd rather he just get on with it and jump ship without costing the game any more bullshit.

Joey is just like Gould...me me me me Me Me ME ME ME MEEEEEEEEEE. He'll be loving this I reckon, let him go I say. In doing all this to try and keep him all it is doing is making it an even bigger loss than it really was if he left. All of a sudden the ARU can say how much league wanted to keep him because of what is happening, it'll now be a huge coup if they get him, and you can bet the ARU will soon get onboard because of it. The Knights, NRL and News LTD are now making Johns bigger than the game, and no one is bigger than the game.

How pissed off will the Broncos and Sharks be right now to see all this happening? When they asked for help to keep their international stars from switching codes, what response did they get? A big fat not our problem.

This is all f**king bullshit.

Like it or not....stars sell.

John is probably the biggest start in Rugby League. His loss will have an effect.

Think of all the kids who say Andrew Johns is their favorite player. When these kids are told Johns now plays union, it opens them up to that sport.

If League kept Johns....alot of those kids wouldnt give union a second thought.

So what, how many young Broncos fans scored Sailor like tries in the park? or young Sharkies going the length of the backyard, sidesteping the dog, fending off the cat just like their hero Rogers? No matter what way you want to look at this, it's BS the NRL and News LTD are doing something because it's Johns and did nothing in the past.

This is all f***ing bullsh*t.

What he said.

Johns has been out for most of the year and yet somehow, miraculously, we've had a great season. Time to move on to a new set of heroes.

How about they give us a hand to keep Wiki and Monas? They're our two most marketable players and unlike the rest of the NRL we are actually in a frontline battle with Union.

They say no one is bigger than the game but at the moment with everyone pandering to Johns it proves he is in the eyes of those that matter.

The same people that lobve Andrew Johns and use him as there hero can now have blokes like Craig Wing, Kurt Gidley, Karmichael Hunt, Benji Marshall etc etc. There is a never ending stream of great talent coming through.

To be honest with ya the best thing the NRL could do was to stop worrying about what a 30 yr old champ is going to do and start promoting our new generation of stars.

This year the league loses Brad Fittler, Ryan Girdler most likely Andrew Johns. What better time to start an advertisment campaign showing highlights of the above three and then have it fade away and then have highlights of the above 4 and some other kids strutting there stuff. They could then finish it with a motto "Your NRL as some champions leave others arrive" or something like that anyway.

Bloody brilliant idea........ while the kids keep coming blokes like John while as good as they are are capable of replacement.

No matter what way you want to look at this, it's BS the NRL and News LTD are doing something because it's Johns and did nothing in the past.

News Ltd couldn't do a deal for Tuqiri, because the Broncos are owned by News Ltd, and have sponsors with companies that are owned by News Ltd. So any money News Ltd paid Tuqiri comes under the cap, even if it's related to writing a column, etc.

The Knights have no sponsors with companies that are owned by News Ltd, so any money News Ltd pays Johns doesn't come under the cap.

Fairly simple to work out.

The other deal that the NRL rejected with Tuqiri and the Broncos was rejected because the company that the Broncos organised demanded advertising(over the load speaker) at all Broncos home matches. The deal that the NRL approved between the Knights & Johns, is fine because the company the Knights organised doesn't want anything in return from the Knights.

Fairly simple to work out. It's fine if the money comes from a source that has no link with club - even if the club organised it; It's not fine if the money comes from a source that is linked with the club - Even if it is just free advertising in return for the deal (That's called sponsorship - the Broncos just called it something else)

admit it or not, but the large majority of people posting here will watch with huge interest joeys first union games, and many will be hooked. He will bring a new dimension to the code and will be a revolution for Union.

Not me. Union bores me to death. Not the quality of the players, but the rules of the game.
