Guilty on both counts.

That's a third of next season off for his troubles, assuming Wigan don't make 6th place.

How did Darren Albert get his broken cheekbone? That had nothing to do with Newton, right?

No, he tackled Brett Dallas front on. Brave tackle from Albert but totally needless as two other Saints players already had him. Albert just kind of flew into the ball/arm as Dallas clutched it against his chest.

Newton did Gilmour with a swinging arm and Long with an elbow.

According to a direct quote from the surgeon Long has a 'severe fracture of the cheekbone with involvement of the eye socket' and Albert has 'a fracture of the cheekbone with possible involvement of the eye socket'.

Long has already been operated on and is still training with Saints I believe, although obviously no contact for about 6-8 weeks. No news on Albert.

Gilmour was in hospital for neurological scans yesterday, but is expected to be given the all clear to play against Leeds in a couple of weeks.

Nasty business all round.

I had him going for 8....Im glad they gave him 10 though.

Hopefully they dont allow him to get out of this ban by being named in games he normally wouldnt play in.

here is the article

Wigan hooker Terry Newton has been hit by a lengthy ban for breaking Sean Long's cheekbone and knocking out Lee Gilmour against St Helens last weekend.

The Great Britain international, 26, will miss 10 Super League games - a record suspension for the competition.

Newton was banned for seven matches for the tackle on Long and another three games for a heavy challenge on Gilmour.

With a maximum of five games left this season for Wigan, the ban means Newton will miss the start of Super League XI.

The former Leeds player, who has been linked with a move to Bradford, could sit out as much as two months of next season if the Warriors fail to reach the play-offs.

That's because he will also be able to count one pre-season friendly as part of his suspension, leaving him with eight games to serve from February.

Newton, who was also fined £600, was found guilty of using his forearm on Gilmour and of using his forearm and elbow on Long.

Wigan chairman Maurice Lindsay declined to comment on the ruling, but St Helens chairman Eamonn McManus, who was furious at the time of the incidents, said: "Everybody who saw them were pretty disturbed by it.

"Now the authorities have made their decision, it's been dealt with. It's not for me to comment on the length of the ban."

Barrie McDermott avoided a ban when he appeared in front of the disciplinary committee on a charge of striking.

The Leeds prop, who plans to retire at the end of the season, was found guilty of a high tackle during the 33-16 defeat at Warrington on Saturday but escaped with a £300 fine.

It's a good job that Newton did get the ban he deserved. It sounded like Long and Saints were very wound up by the challenge on Long. Especially afterwards were Newton tapped him round the head, to say "Gotcha". They were ready to take the matter further, by all accounts.

I would've said 8-10 games in total, and I think 10 is a very fair ban considering Newton's past record of cleaning players out and losing his head, and the amount of times he's been given benefit of doubt.

He'll only serve 8, at most, so I imagine he's pretty relieved. And justice has been served. Well done, RFL. And a speedy recovery to Gilmour, Long and Albert.

Cheers FG for the Albert info - that's an unlucky break.

But is Newton worth it for Bradford anymore, missing the first two months and with a record of spilled-over aggression likely to cost him more time off at some stage? Henderson seems to go OK and get the job done...

Rumour has it that St Helens are going to get rid of Higham but they'll trade him to anyone but Wigan.

So Bradford are going to get Higham and then trade Higham to Wigan for Newton

I think Henderson and Higham would be an ideal combination at hooker. I can't see Micky getting a starting spot at any of the top sides but he deserves more game time than he is going to get at Saints next year.

He's battling for a bench spot with Roby so I think it would suit all parties if he found himself a new club. He'll go with the best wishes of most Saints fans though - he's a great bloke with a great attitude. Just hope he doesn't end up at Wigan, I wouldn't want to hate him lol.

Oh and as for Newton, I had him down for 8 games aswell (2 for the Gilmour hit and 6 for the Long elbow) but who am I to complain at 10 matches?

I think he'll get two knocked off on appeal though.

The Huddersfield one will count as one. If Wigan make the play-offs you can add another 1 or 2. He can use a pre-season friendly as 1, and he can probably use an Under 21 game as one. So he could probably use the system to get it down to a 6-7 match ban for next year, before even appealing.

Considering he's injured and would miss the Huddersfield and any possible play off games, a 10 match ban probably is fair, as the RFL know that in reality, it's more like to be at most an 8 match ban, and at least a 6 match ban.

Iinternationals don't count, do they? From what I can remember, Mal Alker was called up a couple of years ago for the 3rd test of an Ashes, but couldn't play as he was sent off on the last game of the season for fighting. But I don't remember if they actually counted the international, that he couldn't take part in, as part of his ban? I doubt they did. Just wanted to make sure.

I have a feeling Newton's ban will be increased upon appeal. Saints will not let this lie, Daniel Anderson is in the paper today bemoaning Newton's 'light' punishment. Saints board is also fuming at the totally unprofessional way Wigan have handled the issue.

If the RFL reduce the ban, I would expect fireworks.

I can't believe Wigan club thinks they've got a chance of appealing against the hit on Long, no wonder Anderson is blowing up.

For mine the other incident was where they might have argued the player was crouching a bit when hit. The hit on Long was late and high and no questions about it to me.

If Newton wasn't such a grub, I'd have argued the Gilmour one wasn't so bad. But seeing it again, even though he's ducking into it, Newton seems to c**k his arm back twice and knows what he's doing.

Can't believe what he said about the Long incident. Something like, "There was never any intent on my behalf to harm him."
Long was flat out on the floor and he came over and slapped him around the head and said "Gotcha". He's not got a leg to stand on.

They should increase the ban, like they did with Matuatia years back when he had the cheek to appeal. And his fine whilst they're at it. Hit him where it hurts!
But knowing the RFL, they'll reduce it by 2. Just for appealing.

Long's face paralysed and could be a year before he fully recovers. From MEN:

SURGEONS have told St Helens star Sean Long it could take up to 12 months for him to fully recover from his shattered cheekbone.

Long has had two plates inserted into the side of his face and was told by doctors it could take a year before he has any feeling again in the nerves and muscle tissue.

Long's season and his involvement with Great Britain in the forthcoming Tri-Nations tournament is over after he was hit by Wigan's Terry Newton during last Friday's Super League clash.

Newton was subsequently banned for seven games and handed a further three-match suspension for a separate incident involving Long's Saints team-mate Lee Gilmour.

Karl Long, the younger brother of the injured Saints ace, told M.E.N. Sport: "Sean is absolutely gutted by the extent of this injury.

"I saw him before he underwent surgery in Liverpool and he was in a very bad way - his face was a right mess.

"Sean's cheekbone was smashed in four places up to his eye and he has needed to have plates inserted to his face.

Civil action

"He told me he simply couldn't feel his face and we've since found out that it could take a considerable time, up to a year in fact, before he gets the full feeling back into this part of his face.

"It's a real sickener. His face has also been cut and these injuries will take a few months to heal. My brother is down right now because he was really looking forward to finishing the season on a high with Saints and Great Britain."

Saints coach Daniel Anderson and Knowsley Road bosses were outraged by the incident that saw Newton placed on report by Oldham referee Ian Smith.

He was subsequently banned by the RFL after they studied video evidence.

It's understood there is a strong possibility of Long, who plans to marry in January, taking civil action against Newton, who has been linked with Bradford.

Meanwhile, Newton's appeal against the ban for the tackle on Long is likely to be heard on Tuesday. He has accepted the ban handed out for the stiff arm that knocked out Gilmour.

Newton said: "I have pleaded guilty in respect of the Lee Gilmour tackle but I have also apologised for that.

"I am equally sorry for Sean Long who received an injury following my collision with him. He is a Great Britain team-mate and I do not enjoy seeing him injured.

"I hope Sean soon recovers but I must appeal and I want to sit before the panel and tell them what happened."

On teletext, Long says that Newton is telling porkies and has not been in contact to apologise to him. He goes on to say that even if Newton did make an effort to apologise, he could basically shove it up his ass, as the video, the extent of his injury, and Newton's reaction afterwards, show that he set out to do damage.

Terry Newton is scum. Pure and utter scum. The news about Sean Long is pretty awful and I have no problems at all with him taking Newton through the courts. People will moan about it being a dangerous precedent to set in the sport but Newton deserves it. Cases like this should always end up in court, whoever is involved. Not because of the injury, or the high shot, but because of the intent to cause harm. If Newton had done those injuries to Long in a genuine attempt to tackle him, there would not be legal action. It is the sheer intent to cause harm that is the crucial bit.
