Newtown scrap Jim Beam

The Board of the Newtown Rugby League Football Club has announced that the club will not be fielding a team in the 2007 NSWRL Jim Beam Cup competition.

This decision has been made following a thorough review of the club's internal structure and scope of operations, and is done with the intention of making the most efficient usage of the club's financial and logistical resources.

The Newtown RLFC will be concentrating its efforts on participating in the NSWRL VB Premier League competition as part of the club's successful and continuing partnership with the Sydney Roosters RLFC.

The Newtown club's 2007 season will commence in February with trial matches against North Sydney, Balmain and Parramatta.

Its disappointing Newtown has left, especially after three new teams have joined the JBC for the 2007 season.

Still understandable, Newtown works on a very tight budget, and has to look after the primary interests of the club, which of course is VB Premier League.

Jeez, I hope not. When they tried to bundle us (Maggies) out in the eighties,
I could never understand why Newtown did not fight harder to stay in.

Not at all! If this yar is anything to go by, the players started with that attitude but then grew to appreciate playing for Newtown. At no other PL club were they praised in such numbers by fans who saw them as their number one team. This touched them.

The Jets dropped down to one team in 2000 when it entered First Division. It's not the end of them by a long way.

As for Newtown in the 1980s, they had much more debt than Wests and without a fan like Wayde, could not take up the fight.

An odd thing to say Twiz. Newtown seem to have their house in order and they have been in bigger scraps than this.

Getting booted out of the first grade is about as big a kick in the guts as any team can get, and yet they survived. You may have to reassess your doomsday prophecy.

You'd have to ask Messers Quayle and Arthurson. Newtown were all ready to move to Campbelltown.. and they had the backing of the previous NSWRL administration. Long story.

Rick was indeed our saviour, but a couple of years later, we crapped on him :(

Just finished reading the rest of the posts after yours then. I think Newtown management are saving some money with the expectation of returning to Beam Cup after saving some cash in their absence, then returning even bigger and stronger, by utilising the advantagious link with prem/league Roosters while it's available !!. ;-)

Hope I am right and they are back some season soon, however where will those always needed replacements come from for the prem/league team when players make the step up to firsts. ??? We have relied on them EVERY season that we have been a competable Prem/league side, and NOW they are not there to call on. TROUBLES perhaps for 2007 if the Roosters 1st grade have the injury and suspension problems that they so regularly had in 2006, again in the upcoming season.

A top 4th place may be a problem without any depth in 2007 !!!

Hope they are back for the 08 comp. I was looking forward to seeing a historical club playing in Perth.

This is a year of consolidation as we are spending considerably more on PL for contracted places, it is hoped we will reenter in season 2008 but the costs of JBC and the lack of return made it difficult next year.

Just more info relating to the imminent demise of the Jets.

If the imminenet demise of the Jets, or any club, was measured by how many fans turned up to see its reserve grade team (which is what the JBC was) play in a finals match, all clubs would be in real trouble. You obviously have no idea.
