Maybe there is a lack of bidding tension between the networks. In about six months, origin series would have just concluded.

It is hard to do a tv deal in the off season where the code, respectively is out of sight, out of mind. So the NRL needs to do the dealing in the middle of the season. And maybe do it after origin, especially if there is record ratings.

If my memory serves me correctly, the AFL signed off on their deal in September-finals time!

I suspect they have been talking to prospective bidders from mid last year at least … the deal has usually been done two years in advance … although I appreciate they are scouring the global markets this time

Looks like no one has blown them away yet

The AFL one is a strange one for him to mention, as it was the AFL having one less FTA game (Sat night) then they used to (i.e. copying the current NRL model)

Its stands to reason that having a FTA Sat night game all season in the NRL would lead to far more viewers than the equivalent STV coverage, but is the financial cost worth it? (i.e. I assume STV pay more than having higher ratings on FTA is worth).

I find it very hard to believe that deal the AFL got out of Fox stands up financially … Im leaning that the NRL should cut bait with Kayo and leave the AFL to it , rather than getting dragged down with them … what will the average punter be paying then to watch the AFL?

I’ve also said previously that Monday night football should be a new vehicle for NRL FTA… could even make it exclusive to the network that picks it up

For the 2013-2017 tv rights, the NRL announced the deal in August 2012. However in the last two deals, they have announced it two years in advance. Fair to say in the last two deals, the NRL didn't realise it's potential, especially in the last one, where the code gave an extension to Fox in the middle of Covid.

I don’t believe the NRL has ever reached their potential before in the rights deal …. Having News Ltd as a 50 percent owner for years and then watching Rupert Murdoch have a hissy fit when the NRL tried to go off script one time didn’t help , but no excuses the last time …PVL got it wrong unfortunately

TV boss in major declaration in bid to poach NRL rights

Is NRL set for a new home on free-to-air television when the current rights deal ends in 2027?
Currently broadcast by Channel 9 and Fox, the NRL is set to enter a new round of negotiations, with Ch 7, Ch 10 and streaming giants believed to be preparing bids.

Having already secured the rights to this year’s rugby league world cup, Channel 7 boss Chris Jones have said he will initiate talks with NRL Chairman Peter V’landys about expanding the network’s league delivery.
“The Rugby League World Cup comes at the end of this year,” Jones told Kane Cornes on SEN’s Locked In. “We’re terribly excited about that and it sits in a beautiful slot.
“Of course, we would love to get a piece of some of the NRL. What that looks like, who knows? But we will start those discussions with Peter and the team.
“They have a great sport.
“We love what we have with the AFL Thursday to Sunday; we would be silly not to put our hats in the ring.”
Jones’ comments follow the network’s move to expand popular AFL show The Agenda Setters into NRL for 2026 with a new panel show beginning from round one of the NRL season and continuing through to the end of RLWC2026.
“We cannot wait to expand Seven’s sport offering into the NRL season. The Agenda Setters: Rugby League will do just as the name suggests and be at the forefront of news and opinion from the start of the NRL season right through to the end of the Rugby League World Cup,” he said.

“With an unbeatable 2026 sport calendar that begins with the Summer of Cricket, the 2026 AFL season, the Birmingham 2026 Commonwealth Games, Supercars Championship and now the Rugby League World Cup, there is something for every Australian on Seven and 7plus Sport.”

Good if they could promote NRL on cricket instead of just other codes.

could easily go for all rep football
as it wouldn't clash with their AFL obligations ... offset some of the cost with DAZN to simulcast origin

or
Monday night football as early as next year !... same as above , no clash with the fumblers

hat in the ring...do it!!

He actually said that having one of each ( FTA and Subscription) was his “preferred model” but if the money isn’t “ where they want it to be , then we will look at possibly splitting it “….

FTA as it stands now, generally doesn't make money. If you go breaking that up it makes the bludger games mid season worth being covered.

Especially as TV doesn't pick the games now

If 9 have a cry & say the 213 NRL games aren't .. " worth" .. covering without reps
then offer the right money for it all & it won't be a problem ,
the NRL will be thinking 180 to 200 mill for the whole package i'd think.

It’s funny then why the 7 guy being quoted in the above article was so positive at the prospect of covering NRL games “we would be silly not to put our hats in the ring”…: guess he must love losing money

I don't think he's referring to "NRL" games as such , club games .
The term NRL seems to encompass everything these days , the tip is they want Origin & Internationals as they won't interfere with their fumbleball coverage.

7 might be serious about bidding or they are trying to get 9 to pay more knowing full well that 7 can't pay for both league and AFL and show them on the main channel. It would be silly of 7 to say we are not interested, then 9 basically has no competition for the FTA rights and the NRL has to accept what 9 is offering.

either way it benefits the game. The only one off spot likely to be available to them is a potential Monday night game

I find it odd that the 7 guy is on some AFL radio program spruiking the merits of NRL in front of a dude who is an NRL hater.. go on an NRL show and do it, or perhaps he is trying to get a message to the AFL to lift their shitty game that it looks like they have overpaid for
