Ausar Walcott of the Cleveland Browns pleads not guilty to attempted murder

PATERSON, N.J. -- A former rookie linebacker for the Cleveland Browns has pleaded not guilty to attempted murder and other charges in New Jersey.

Ausar Walcott was arraigned Thursday in Paterson, N.J. He is accused of punching Derek Jones in the side of the head outside The Palace Gentlemen's Club in Passaic early Sunday.

A prosecutor says Jones is in a medically induced coma at a New York hospital, where he's listed in critical condition.

The 23-year-old Walcott is being represented by a public defender while he attempts to hire an attorney. He is being held on $500,000 bail. The case will now go to a grand jury.

Walcott, who played for the University of Virginia, was signed by the Browns on May 13 following a tryout. The team released him Wednesday.

Troubled Cowboys lineman Joshua Brent jailed for violating bond conditions; tests show marijuana in his system

Josh Brent (Dallas County Sheriff's Department)

Dallas Cowboys lineman Josh Brent is in the Dallas County jail after he apparently tested positive for marijuana last week, violating the terms of his $100,000 bond on an intoxication manslaughter charge.

Brent is charged in connection with a December car crash that killed his best friend and teammate, Jerry Brown Jr. Brent, who was driving the car, had a reported blood alcohol level of .18, more than twice the legal limit of .08.

A hearing was scheduled for July 19 to determine whether Brent’s bond should be declared insufficient after a May urinalysis found levels of marijuana in his system. But Dallas County prosecutors filed an amended motion earlier this week to speed up that process after a June 19 test “indicated the presence of marijuana” in his system again.

“The defendant in this case has been repeatedly warned of the conditions of pre-trial release in this case,” the state’s motion reads. “His continued use of marijuana demonstrates a pattern of conduct in disregard of this court’s authority to properly supervise his pre-trial release.”

A state district judge agreed with the state, declaring Brent’s bond “insufficient for good cause,” clearing the way for his arrest.
Neither Brent nor his attorney, George Milner, could be immediately reached for comment.

The Dallas Cowboys have no comment.

Joe Lefeged DB IND 6 Hrs

Updating an earlier story, Colts S Joe Lefeged was arrested for multiple gun-related offenses overnight in Washington, D.C., after fleeing police during a traffic stop.
Lefeged, 25, was in a vehicle with another man when police attempted to stop the vehicle. After an unspecified chase the two were arrested, said Officer Araz Alali, a D.C. police spokesman. A handgun was found in the vehicle, Alali said. Lefeged is being arraigned this afternoon on various charges, including: carrying a firearm without license, unregistered firearm, unregistered ammunition and presence of a firearm in a motor vehicle.

Bryce Brown RB PHI 6 Hrs

A pit bull and her seven puppies belonging to Eagles RB Bryce Brown were among the animals seized in a suspected dog fighting operation in Wisconsin.
The seizure took place on May 21 at Northland Pits in Fall Creek, Wisconsin. During a Friday hearing, Bekah Weitz, the humane officer for the Eau Claire County Humane Association, said one of her concerns regarding the animals was they were being trained for fighting. When the dogs were seized, she saw scarring on seven animals. We'll have more on this story as further details emerge.

hmm, i wonder if brown is a front for vick?

Getty ImagesDogs owned by Eagles running back Bryce Brown were seized in May at a Wisconsin kennel. According to the Eau Claire (Wisc.) Leader-Telegram, the seizure of the adult female Pit Bull and seven puppies occurring in connection with a broader dogfighting investigation.
On Friday, a judge ordered that the dog and its litter be returned to Brown.
Brown has not been accused of wrongdoing, and apparently won’t be. He sent his dog to the kennel for breeding in February.
Brown’s lawyer argued that Brown is a victim, and that it was important that the young dogs be released to Brown sooner rather than later.
“It’s a lot easier to sell 8-week-old puppies than it is to sell eight-month-old puppies,” attorney Sheila Kessler said in court.

Again, there’s no evidence or allegation Brown did anything wrong. It appears that he simply picked the wrong kennel.

So don't be a Bengal or a Viking and definitely don't be a defensive player either.

Interesting that defensive players top the list.

DA: Arrest warrant for 49ers' Brooks filed in error

According to police, Ahmad Brooks attacked Niners teammate Lamar Divens with a bottle.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The Santa Clara District Attorney's Office erroneously filed an arrest warrant for 49ers linebacker Ahmad Brooks after allegations that he repeatedly hit a teammate on the head with a beer bottle, a prosecutor said Wednesday.

The district attorney's office is still investigating the incident and will decide next week whether or not to bring charges, Assistant District Attorney Karyn Sinunu-Towery said. She said there is no outstanding arrest warrant.

"We haven't had time to look at everything we have and make a fair assessment of what went wrong here,'' she said.

Prosecutors sought the warrant last week to arrest Brooks on suspicion of committing felony assault with a deadly weapon. A judge signed it last Thursday, but the county district attorney's office asked to have it put on hold the next day, Santa Clara Superior Court spokesman Joe Macaluso said.

According to police, Brooks hit teammate Lamar Divens with the bottle three times and then punched him in the face during an early morning argument on June 8. The alleged attack left Divens with a 3-inch cut on his forehead, according to police statements accompanying the warrant application.

Brooks, Divens and others had been drinking and went to a bar before returning to Brooks' house. Divens pretended to throw Brooks' keys in the grass, though he had actually held onto the keys, prompting the attack, according to the statements.

Investigators were told Brooks was intoxicated and had threatened to get a gun, according to the statements.

A person who answered the telephone at a number listed for Brooks referred questions seeking comment to the 49ers. The team said in an email that it was aware of the situation, but would not comment for now.

Brooks started every regular-season game last season, finishing with 46 tackles, 6.5 sacks, an interception and two forced fumbles.

Bengals have really fixed that part of their recruitment now. We are one of the lowest arrest rates for the last few years, but damn we had some troublemakers on our books. Mike Brown and his cheapskate ways.

SAN FRANCISCO -- Authorities say San Francisco 49ers All Pro linebacker Aldon Smith is out of jail following his arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence and marijuana possession

Santa Clara County Sheriff's Sgt. Kurtis Stenderup says Smith posted $5,250 bail on Friday morning, just hours after he was taken into custody by police responding to a solo vehicle crash involving a pickup truck in San Jose's Silver Creek area.

Police say Smith was arrested after officers gave him a breathalyzer test and determined he was under the influence.

The 49ers said in a statement that the team is aware of the matter and had no further comment. It's not clear whether Smith will play for the Niners when they host the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday.

The linebacker was also arrested on suspicion of drunken driving in Miami Beach in January 2012.

Smith has also been named in a lawsuit by a Northern California man who said he was shot during a party at Smith's house.

In the suit filed earlier this month in Santa Clara County Superior Court, David Kleczek, an attorney for Ronndale Esporlas, claims that Smith and former Niners tight end Delanie Walker fired weapons illegally during a party at Smith's San Jose home on June 29, 2012.

More From ESPN.com
Aldon Smith was arrested on DUI and marijuana charges early Friday. The talented defensive end needs to get his life under control before he blows his chance at a special NFL career, Bill Williamson writes. Blog

The players charged a $10 admission and $5 per drink, the lawsuit said. Smith, 23, and Walker, who is also named in the suit, were allegedly intoxicated on Smith's balcony when they later fired gunshots in the air while trying to end the party, the lawsuit said.

Kleczek said they then moved to the driveway where he alleged more shots were fired. Esporlas, 21, was shot twice in the leg while he was "caught in the crossfire between the two groups of people firing gunshots at each other," the lawsuit said.

As a result, Esporlas, "sustained serious, catastrophic and permanent injuries," the lawsuit said. The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages.

Attorneys for Smith and Walker, 29, have said Esporlas "freely and voluntarily exposed himself to all risks of harm" by attending the party.

They say injuries suffered by Esporlas, who was shot in the leg, were not caused by the defendants.

Santa Clara County prosecutors have said they are considering criminal charges.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

Ravens RB Ray Rice arrested

By Jamison Hensley | ESPN.com

Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice and his fiancée were arrested and charged with simple assault over the weekend after a physical altercation at an Atlantic City, N.J., casino.
In the report, police said Rice and his fiancée "struck each other with their hands" but that no injuries were reported. Both were released with summons to appear in court, according to police.

Ray Rice is off to a strange start to what is the most important offseason of his career, Jamison Hensley writes. Analysis

"We haven't seen any charging documents yet," Rice's attorney Michael Diamondstein said. "There was an argument that included Ray. I can't give any specifics because we haven't seen the document yet.

"Once we're able to go through the evidence, it should wind up to be little more than a misunderstanding."

On Sunday night, a Ravens spokesman said the team spoke with Rice and that he and his fiancée returned home together after being detained.

Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome said Monday that neither he nor coach John Harbaugh has spoken to Rice, although he claimed they likely will do so in the next day.

"I don't know the situation," Newsome said. "I've only gotten what has been written. I've not had a chance to talk to Ray. I really don't know the situation. Up until I get all the answers, then that's when we make decisions within this organization."

Newsome did say that he expects Rice to remain with the Ravens in 2014.
"When I left my office 20 minutes [ago] and John had been in there 15 minutes before then, Ray Rice was still a big part of what we plan to do in 2014," Newsome said.

Rice, 27, signed a five-year, $35 million deal with the Ravens before the 2012 season. He is coming off his worst season with the team, rushing for only 660 yards and averaging a career-low 3.1 yards per carry.
