NFL in Australia

With Channel 10 getting the rights to show some NFL on FTA TV. It made me think about how popular the NFL is in Australia.

I have a couple of friends who follow it as much as we do, but there isn't many. I have other friends who have a team and like to see a game or score every now and then.

It is unfortunate that there aren't any live bars where you can watch NFL with other fans and get into it. It is basically watch the game at a house and get pissed with a handful of mates.

So to the point, how popular do you think the NFL is in Australia and does it have potential to be much more popular than what it is?

It has great potential and I always wanted to open a a sports bar called "Sportsunlimited" funnily enough. ;-)

No sports bars have ESPN for some reason and IMO, they have the games on at reasonable times for Aussies to go and watch during their lunch break.

I think the game has great potential and as the digital world expands, we'll see its populairty grow in Australia.

Who would be the most popular these days? I remember when everyone had Emmitt Smith but the Cowboys jersey is so bland.

I'd guess Brady and Manning would be the most popular these days although Clinton Portis seems to have a bit of cult following.

Maybe it was Transformers warping my mind.

im looking forward to when sports retailers start stocking nfl jerseys again

Only if they are the real deal.... Alot of 90's jerseys out there are cheap imports.

Get them off eBay... far cheaper in than in any store in Aus.

Portis has a cult following, but trying to get a Larry Fitzgerald jersey for a reasonable price on eBay took me about 2 months.

Before the start of this season I would have said Mike Vick jerseys would be the most popular.... so we might see Bush and Young jersey's???

I will treasure my 2005-06 Sean Taylor jersey for the rest of my life.

I was dissapointed at uni.

Since i go to uni in the city i was hoping there might be a bar somewhere in town where i could catch some NFL between classes with people who were interested. No such luck, i ended up recording the games and never watching them.

I am an avid NFL fan, I fell in love with the game going on 15 or so years ago as 12 y.o. watching the weekly highlights with Don Lane (how I loved that show - bring ol' Don back!). Tampa Bay were the joke of the league with New England, Dallas ruled the NFL and a game named Steve Young was making 49er fans forget about a guy named Joe.

Does the NFL have potential in Australia? Sadly, I don't think so.

We are flooded in the sports market and with the NFL, you either love it or hate it - there is no in between in my experience.

The problem for most Aussies IMO is that the game is too long and most do not understand (nor accept) the fact there are so many stoppages in the game and two teams to do a one team job (offense and defence). Let's face it, if the average Aussie had the choice to watch a fast paced, full contact and enduring game of rugby league that lasts for 80 minutes or the 2-3hr, stop-start NFL - league wins for the majority.

I think there is a small niche market for the NFL, though I don't think it will ever be mainstream in Australia.

I think the main thing holding the NFL back in Australia is the number of commercials they run during the games.

I know I struggle to watch it live these days unless it's a playoff game. Prefer to record it and skip over the ads. Even play some segments on 1.5 speed on the DVD recorder.

You guys are right. People aren't able to sit and watch a game for 3-4 hours. Most of us can though.

I do want NFL to become more popular so I can go to a bar in my Moss or Brady jersey without being looked at funny

Nice collection.

I have:
Warren Sapp - home strip
Derek Brooks - away strip J
ohn Lynch - home strip
Cadilac Williams - home strip (though he has been injured ever since on/off!)
Warrick Dunn - home strip
Vinny Testaverde - NFL retro throwback
Clinton Portis - Miami Hurricanes orange alternate strip
Edgerrin James - Miami Hurricanes green alternate strip
Willis MaGahee - Miami Hurricanes white strip
Devin Hester - Miami Hurricanes orange alternate strip
Sean Taylor - Miami Hurricanes green alternate strip

Well that makes 11, not 10! I forgot about the Hester uniform I picked up when over in USA just as he was making an impact as a rookie for the Bears ;-)

I see a trend!!!

I only have 3 atm:

Portis Broncos home jersey (screen printed)
Sean Taylor home jersey stitched (like the Cowboys the Skins wear white at home)
Larry Fitzgerald home jersey stitched

The U is may favourite college, but I have never gone out to get a U jersey... my sister wants me to get a Dwayne Johnson one.

Had a few mates round for thanksgiving friday, watched all 3 games, only complaints were the ad breaks.

When i was in the states last dec/january (playoff time was amazing), I went to the Giants v Saints game in NY on Christmas Eve, was an amazing experience, pity the Giants got smashed.

In Vegas I purchased a mens Large plexico burress home jersey, after i bought it i realised its way to big, will probably get it framed and hang it in my bar.

Then in NYC i went to the reebok store and got a kids sized xxl that fits perfectly, im a mens medium shirt over here. Tiki Barber alternate jersey (red).

I wear the Tiki jersey at the gym.

But yeah playoff time was amazing, i went to sports bar in NYC for the Giants v Eagles wild card game and drank with the locals, and arnt they fanatical.

many die eli, die chants.
