God i'll love if some team pays him a ton and then tries to play him in man

I think Carolina have done the right thing here, he's a zone corner who cant really play man, you dont break the bank for those guys. Kudos to Gettleman, he's a great GM

Pretty much, The raiders have Cap space don't they? Wheres Shiz when ya need him.
We paid decent money already in FA in a number of areas... We maybe tapped out...

It's definitely an area of need... And would free us up big time in the draft...

But I don't think we can offer him anything more than what Carolina did... And as trendy as we are at the moment as a preseason pick to make the playoffs... Carolina ARE probably the best team in the league.

Lots of intrigue as to why Carolina let him walk... Thinking about it... I think this could be a master stroke by the panthers.

Just my 2 cents... I don't think they value corners very high salary wise...

I get the feeling that they never really intended to pay him that franchise tag... they don't really value corners that high... Hence why they slapped a non-exclusive tag on him...

They probably never intended to pay him that franchise tag money and were probably hoping to slap that non-exclusive tag on him for awhile in the hope someone comes along and pays 2 first rounders for him.

That obviously didnt happen so they just cut it loose and let the market dictate his worth...

But releasing him this late takes away a number of options and really only leaves teams who have lots of cap room this late in free agency... And usually teams that have cap space this late in FA are teams who struggle to attract free agents so much that even big money doesn't make them attractive... Normally that means not very good teams...

So I guess the Panthers are hoping he now has to make a decision between Revis money in a bad team... or a more realistic salary in a contending team like Carolina..

If he had been available at the start of FA... All the good teams would have had more options to make a deal work cap wise from him IMO...

smart move by Carolina ...

That system doesnt need to pay corners big money
they dont play a lot of man, they dont single guys up and go one on one.

They need a physical corner who can jam at the line of scrimmage, disrupt timing and then can sit into zones, make some plays and tackle well. They're going to eat up the small stuff in the front 7, have the safeties cover deep and then your corners are playing qtr zones.
You can definitely find corners who can play in that system.

You dont break the bank for corners who cant really cover man to man.

I understand this move a little more after the crazyness from earlier today. means we should be able to extend both Star and KK this season or next and we should get a round 3 comp pick in 2017 instead of 2018 if he did sign the Tag.

still a shocking development and it's a shame that he was aiming for pluto when Gettleman was never going to give him that much. good luck Norman.

Exactly

Yahoo Sports:

While the Panthers respected Norman's performance in their zone coverage scheme, sources said an opinion lingered among some that Norman's skills weren't comparable to elite man-to-man cornerbacks in the league. The
specific concern was that Norman's lack of elite speed (he entered the NFL running in the 4.6-second range) and penchant for risk made him vulnerable. The belief was that Norman would always require a high-level safety capable of cleaning up his mistakes, and wasn't on the same level as the Seattle Seahawks' Richard Sherman, who also plays in a zone-heavy scheme. The sources said Norman was not viewed by everyone in the franchise as capable of shadowing an opponent's No. 1 receiver on a full-game basis, a la the New York Jets' Darrelle Revis.

Those types of players, full-time, man-to-man cornerbacks with top-shelf speed, rise to the top of the salary scale. Revis' $14.02 million-per-year salary reflects that, pacing all NFL defensive backs. One league source said Norman was seeking to set a new bar at the cornerback position, exceeding the Revis deal to the tune of $15 million to $16 million per year. The source added that the Panthers balked at those figures and were prepared to let Norman play out this season under the franchise tag price of $13.95 million. The source said the mindset of Panthers general manager

Dave Gettleman changed when the cornerback didn't sign the tag and ap

To be fair to Norman...

Revis wasn't worth his 14 odd million last season either...

he certainly played man coverage last season... OLD man coverage...

The way you've put it makes a lot of sense, must admit when I read the article I thought it would weaken the Panthers but you're right.

Have to agree nick. Always good playing in a strong division cause you know your team will be battle hardened by the playoffs.
