NFL rookie dead at 23
From correspondents in San Francisco
August 22, 2005

MEDICAL examiners continue to seek a reason behind the death of San Francisco 49ers offensive lineman Thomas Herrion even as teammates, coaches, family and friends mourned his death at age 23.

Herrion, an NFL rookie, collapsed in the locker room during a post-game team prayer session following a 26-21 loss at Denver in a pre-season American football exhibition game yesterday (AEST).

"It's a sad time for everyone in the 49ers organisation," 49ers coach Mike Nolan said.

"Right now, we're looking for ways to help our players and coaches cope with this tragedy."

Herrion was immediately treated by team physicians, medical staff and paramedics.

He was given cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and transported to St Anthony's Central Hospital, where he died three hours later.

No cause of death has been announced. A preliminary medical examination was inconclusive.

"The results are still pending so we don't have any medical answers for you at this time," Nolan said.

A memorial service for the team to honour Herrion is scheduled for tomorrow. Janice Herrion told television station WFAA: "We were real proud of Thomas. He was a real joy. He lit up a room when he walked in. People had nothing but praise for him. He was a gift, a real gift."

Herrion had been on the field for the 49ers' 14-play, 91-yard drive that ended with Cody Pickett's 23-yard touchdown run with two seconds remaining in the National Football League match-up.

Nolan said Herrion shook hands with opponents after the game, talked with spectators as he walked off the field and joked with the club nutritionist.

Minutes later came his locker room collapse, which took place during Herrion was on one knee and holding hands with teammates while in prayer.

Nolan learned of Herrion's death only as the team was departing the area.

He gathered team members at the airport to tell them Herrion had died. Nolan also spoke to family members Saturday night and Sunday.

The 49ers will not conduct typical workouts for the next couple of days as they try to cope with Herrion's death. But Nolan said he things getting back to work for the upcoming season will help teammates and coaches deal with grief.

"Football will take a background," Nolan said. "I think being on the field is therapeutic, but not right away."

Nolan recalled a team meeting where a player was called upon to sing his collegiate fight song and Herrion, from the same college, leaped out of his seat and joined in, bringing smiles to all.

"I respected his play and work ethic. I always saw he had leadership qualities," Nolan said. "To see a player come out of his shell like that, it was kind of warming."

Herrion, who was a 1.91m guard weighing in at 141kg, was in his first year with San Francisco but had earlier played at the University of Utah and spent part of last season on the 49ers and Dallas practice squads.

He also played this year with the Hamburg Sea Devils in NFL Europe.

"We are deeply saddened," said Urban Meyer, Herrion's former Utah college coach who now guides the University of Florida. "He was an outstanding, quality young man.

"Elected as a captain by his teammates, he was loved, respected and admired by all of us." New York Jets rookie defensive tackle Sione Pouha, a college teammate of Herrion, was shocked by the passing of "Big Tex". "We were very close," Pouha said. "It affects everyone who came in contact with him, whether directly or indirectly. He was a guy you remember. You feel it."

I'm a huge NFL fan, but these guys are getting to big and unfit ( and not in relation to this poor bugger because nothing has been reported thus far), too drugged up on the juice....

I recall another young guy dying in similar circumstances for Minnesota a couple of years ago during training camp...

Somethings gotta be done.....

You really think? They are fitter than most of the population of America..

Dont jump to conclusions.

Either way, a very sad way to kick of the NFL season..

Not too much of a big NFL fan. His name was Corey Stringer, not to sure if it is a C or a K for his first name.

Minnesota are now using temperature pills for most of there players, the players swallow a pill that the trainers can accurately tell there core body temperature at all times. It helps for the big guys because obviously they would overheat quicker than the RBs and WRs for example.

The result of the data that Minnesota have collected is quite interesting because they have found out that the body temperature of some players actually increases after they finish there work out which shocked me I always thought that you cooled down straight away after you finish a work out.

Yeah maybe, but

a) that doesn't mean that they are fit

b) the average population of America don't spend large quantities of time bashing into other 300 pound human beings wearing losts of metal padding...

Sorry mate i didnt intend for my remark to be taken as me having a go at you. I was joking when i talked about being a big football fan. The reason I put his name in was for other people that wanted to read the story about him.

Im more worried by how little attention this has been given by the NFL as if it is just another daily occurrence.

I think thats half the problem - its not seen as the catastrophe that it really is - imagine if that happened in any Australian sport! There would be reviews, evaluation of trainings, trials, warm ups, warm downs - everything for months on end. Yet in America it only receives a few paragraphs here and there in selected media outlets.

The Body Mass Index says he was extremely obese, but it also says I am, and im not too far from a 6 pack!
And if your questioning how fit these guys are, they are incredibly fit, lineman at that level are very very fit. I remember they did tests on the Bronco's OLine a while back and they were considered close to the most complete athletes in the world.
Its sad that this guy passed away, very sad, but let wait til the tests on his cause of death come back before we jump to anything.
Korey Stringer took ephedra I believe to lose weight when he passed didnt he?

If you think these lineman are as fit as other professional sportsmen ( RL,RU,soccer, cricket, tennis etc etc ) then you are not facing reality.

How much aerobic fitness to these lineman do? They would be flat out running the length of the field.

Their training is strength and blocking drills ( lasting a couple of seconds only).

Do you think it would be possible for these lardo's to jog a mile??

I dont want to have a personal attack on someone, so if this comes across that way I apologise, but I find that extremely hard to believe. Either you have stuffed up your BMI measurements or you are having a lend of yourself.

Dude have you been to America or seen what these guys do and need to do to be in shape and play at the top level?

Have you played at an international level and talked to pro's and professional trainers?

I never said they were fitter than Rugby League players or AFL players or Tennis players. But you know nothing about what you are talking about if you think the cant run the distance of the field.

If you want to play in the NFL at the same position at this guy that has passed away, its a pre-requisite that you must run a 4.9 to 5.2 second 40 yard dash. That is incredible speed for guys of this size and strength.

I made the assumption that the media who were writing about this used the tables you find in textbooks or the things you see on the counters at chemists where you take your height and weight and it matches up to some supposed averages of what you should be.

What you said in your earlier post was

I'm saying that the above is not correct.

Speed, size and strength does not equal fitness.

I wasnt talking about fitness was I. I said "athletes". Just cause an AFL player can run around all day doesnt mean he is the best overall athlete. That would make a Kenyan Marathon runner the best athlete in the world and we know that isnt true.

Popular European and American Sports Scientists consider the standing long jump test to be the best indicator of overall athleticism. The world record is 12'5. All the Broncos Offensive Line did over 11'5.

One thing I have witnessed Lineman do is run 10 x 110 yard sprints all under 16 seconds with 60 seconds rest. Only one guy failed. This was a College team.

This is a little misleading - it is far from a unanimous school of thought that the standing long jump is the best indicator of overall athleticisim. It is part of the overall package, but there is no one agreed test that is accepted by all.

I never said it was accepted by everyone. But you have a lot of elite coaches who train olympic athletes who agree that it is.

Athleticism is about speed, strength, fitness, agility, explosiveness, flexibility and skills. NFL Players have the whole package.
