Nope, I haven't purchased one!!!

I hired a dodgy old ute on Saturday to move a fridge up to Newcastle. First time I've ever driven a ute - I felt pretty tough and blokey The day was quite an experience because

(a) it was pouring rain on Saturday so I was a drowned rat for the whole day and I actually had to help move 2 fridges - the second one was 25 years old and very sturdy and heavy!

(b) it was damn hard finding 3rd gear in the ute!

(c) I had to stop 5 times to adjust the tarp

(d) the cassette player in the ute wasn't working and the radio was stuck on Triple M so I had to listen to rock (or nothing) the whole time!

In fairness, Triple M wasn't too bad. I think I enjoyed about 5 songs:

"Harder to Breathe", Maroon5
"Can't Stop", Red Hot Chili Peppers (I may have the song name wrong)
"Rollover DJ", Jet
"You've Ruined Alll My Favourite Songs", Machine Gun Fellatio
"Sunsets", Powderfinger (an acoustic version!)

OK. Time for me to stop talking about myself ;-) as if that would ever happen

Speaking of feeling blokey: Your name....I take it that it derives its name from the famous cartoon character Astroboy? He wasn't very blokey though.....not enough testosterone flowing through his system. I don't think Astroboy was talking either - his mouth never seemed to be in-sync with the words he was allegedly saying. :-k

I was actually doing 120 on the freeway. But on local streets I stayed pretty slow, especially around corners!!

Nice pick up on the username derivation by the way after I set it up I thought I might be perceived to be some full on new age astrology girl. I do like horoscopes but I don't know much about astrology.

Driving a ute made me feel pretty tough for some reason. A very different feeling to driving my little hatchback! Though I have to say the ute really struggled up some of the hills on the F3!

Yes it's on Foxtel, Optus, Austar, NCable, TransACT. Not sure about any others.

Yes, I'm aware of this. That comment was a swipe at the cultural invasion of foreign television - from Americans ads with really bad dubbing of Australian voices, to Japanese cartoons and movies dubbed over with English voices - it's pretty sad really.

Next time I will insert a ;-) just to make sure. No wonder my comments are considered ambiguous - more emoticons are needed, it seems. ](*,)

I don't have an aversion to emoticons - I just follow the thinking that their use be confined to supplementary status - in addition to some words.

If you track through my posts, you'll find plenty of emoticons....... it is a very handy tool afterall.
I just have an aversion to posts which require the viewer to interpret what someone thinks, based entirely on emoticons with no text, i.e:

I mean, honestly, does this make for good discussion??? :roll:

But I can't see the problem with dubbing a Japanese cartoon with English.

However, if astroboy was never dubbed in English then many would have missed the experience of watching this show. I am sure that some meaning has been altered or lost in translation however I would argue that astroboy in English rates on it's own merits.

In my view, there is nothing wrong with sharing entertainment between cultures. For example Jackie Chan was one of the actors who brought kung fu movies into mainstream Western cinema. What about the large numbers of Caucasians who flock to Chinatown at the Lunar New Year to get involved in the festivities?

As for the negative connotations - it was intentional. There are negatives that come with cultural invasion. Cultural hegemony is a serious problem for Australians who like their identity - it is the loss of identity, the merging of culture into one super culture - albeit a hybrid one, but a super culture nevertheless.

It goes without saying that Americanisation of our media content is not helping - nor is the fact that we like our American cop shows more than the locally-made Blue Heelers etc (which seems to have just as much crime as localities 100 times the size of Moutn Thomas - I don't watch the show by the way!).

Don't underestimate the impact that this Free Trade Agreement will have on local cultural content. I'm not into 'the arts' etc, but as far as movies, television shows, songs etc - if you're not aware of their prominence in our society now, then you sure will be by the time this FTA kicks in.

There is nothing wrong with multiculturalism - don't construe this as an attack on the Americans, the Japanese, or any other major cultural, political or economic power.

But do we want to be Americans - I just want to watch them from a distance, not have people speaking in Americanised accents in my own country.

We don't usually use terms, cultural icons etc from China - so why America?
