Nines - a legit premiership?

Should the Nines be counted as a legitimate premiership. For example, you would say the Cowboys have won two premierships - one Nines Premiership (2014) and one October Premiership (2015). Or is this a dumb idea?

As legitimate as all other pre-season comps of yesteryear, and less significance than a minor premiership.

Cronulla. The last team to hold both the AMCO cup and NRL titles at the same time.

Any competition where a 44 year old slow as kiwi plays is NOT considered a premiership...

Its should be wiped ..

Interesting thread when I was thinking is the tournament worth putting on in the future because only a handful NRL clubs take it remotely seriously.

Can we count the Tooheys Challenge as well? Tooth Cup? AMCO Cup? World Sevens?

How about the City Cup they used to play in the second half of the season back 100 years ago?

Better yet... teams not taking it seriously and beating teams that do.

Panthers won 5 from 6. In 2 of those wins they rested all their big name players.

You can't really bag a team for sending over unknown players for this competition. Not when they humiliate teams who were legitimately trying to win it with their best squadsm

Its better to scrap it than have it as it is with teams like Penrith involved.
Its a great form of the game. I'd think about trying to get a competition up and running with teams that have nothing to do with the NRL. New teams. Basically exclude the NRL clubs. See if Fox and or Ten will put some broadcasting cash towards it. Then try to poach players from the NRL, English SL, State cups and Rugby (have a yearly draft). Sort of super league like but not in direct competition with the NRL so that star players could commit to the competition but still play for their NRL clubs.

Disagree, joy of nines is to see young players given the space and coaching freedom to express themselves. They have to take a 19 man squad. Id make it 9 first graders with 10 or more FG games under their belt. 2 "star" players and the rest can be young players looking to make a name for themselves. Nines is better suited to the fast non physically developed giants required in FG. In fact Storm and Panthers doing so well is a shot in the arm for Nines imo. It shows that you can get great entertainment and RL without a team full of first graders.

RL fans just need to get over the "it isn't real RL" and enjoy it for what it is. Same as the "it isn't Origin" brigade who denigrate IRL.

BBL has shown there is a very marketable place for alternative formats of a game.

Main difference between the 9's and BBL is that unlike cricket, the core game that the 9's is derived from isn't boring...

Penrith were a couple of incorrect calls from going undefeated despite the 'weak' team we sent. Meanwhile the cows took it seriously and sent there best players and got pumped in the quarter finals.
