Warriors deny Watson betting bonanza
14 August 2001
The New Zealand Warriors have denied multimillionaire owner Eric Watson is making a fortune by backing his own team. The National Rugby League (NRL) is investigating comments from Watson's wife, Nicky, that her husband won about $400,000 on the Warriors' victory over Penrith on August 5. Watson faces a fine of up to $NZ60,380 if it is proven he bet on his club. NRL rules state no official aligned with an NRL club is permitted to bet on competition matches. NRL chief executive David Moffett has sent Watson a "please explain" letter but Warriors chief executive Mick Watson - no relation to Eric - said the incident was laughable. "Eric Watson didn't have a punt on the Warriors," Mick Watson told the Waikato Times today. "It was a bit of sarcasm from his wife that was taken as verbatim." Model Nicky Watson told the Sunday Star Times "he'd given the boys a huge incentive". "They said they were doing a story on her lingerie promotion but kept hounding the one point about betting so she gave them a throwaway line," Mick Watson said. thanks to www.stuff.co.nz
