Northern Territory in JBC

The Northern Territory will watch the progress of the Western Australia side in the 2008 JBC as they consider following the same path.

Gary Launt, who resigned as the Manger of The Entrance following a $10,000 fine for playing an ineligible player in the round 21 clash with Cabramatta last year, is now General Manager of the NTRL.

The NT, which currently has 14 players in the junior reps systems of the NRL clubs, wants to provide an avenue for players to stay in the NT but play in a higher standard competitions. Thus, there is also a proposal to apply for entry to SG Ball and harold Matthews comps for 2009.

They're tossing up between joining the Jim Beam Cup or the Qld Cup by 2012.

They really should try to get into the Qld Cup, even if it means a stint in the JBC like WAR is doing now.

I'd love to see the Qld Cup extend into NT if only for geography's sake (also then I can go see them play :) )

IMO putting a team from the top end in a nsw comp when there's a comp in qld doesn't seem to make sense

Oh and by the way, good to see some progress in NT, Cowboys need to help any development there as they're the most supported team in the top-end

cheers

Interesting... Would think that if they followed WA's idea of starting in NSW as a way to "get ready" for the tougher QLD Cup which would be their permanent home... that this would make sence. Would also make sence for the N. Queensland Cowboys to do everything to make this venture a success, as it could be a natural source for Juniors and a strong fanbase...

do keep us posted.

NT in the Qld comp would be great, but I always thought they were a dead set AFL state. What are the player numbers like over there?

Darwin RL has 6 clubs with A Grade and reserve grade with all 6 games played at Richardson Park each saturday kicking off at noon with the last game at 7.30pm. Some of the age comps dont have that many teams, with older sides playing at Richardson Park on Friday night and the younger teams at one of the schools on saturday mornings.

The DRL is trying to get Katherine to put in teams this year but it is a 3 hour trip each way. The Central League (Alice) has 4 clubs.

Some players play both League and AFL because League isd played in the dry season at the same time as the cricket and AFL is played in the wet season.

I believe this could be a successful move for the NTRL if ample marketing is used to promote the game. When I last viewed national participation rates Northern Territory had a higher percentage of players based upon local population than NSW and Qld so the potential is definately there!

A few mates of mine live up there, they reckon it's at worst 50/50 between aussie rules and rugby league, probably more in favour of league if anything. Aussie rules is mainly played by the aboriginals.

Good luck NT. It's been a hard slog for WA to get into JBC and without the ARL's funding it wouldn't have happened. Hopefully they are succesful and it raises the profile of league in NT.

Well they must be going pretty good considering when Nine had the AFL tv rights they still showed the NRL first on Friday nights and the NRL footy show before the AFL one.
