Possible North v South teams
January 19, 2005

A NORTH v South rugby match would be a mouth-watering prospect – an unprecedented chance to see the world's best players on the same field.

The selection process has yet to be finalised, and with such an array of talent from so many countries, the most difficult problem would be who to leave out.

How do you choose, for instance, between Southern Hemisphere wingers as exciting as Doug Howlett, Joe Rokocoko, Rupeni Caucaunibuca, Lote Tuiqiri, Mat Rogers, Wendell Sailor and Jonah Lomu, provided he can get fit in time.

The answer may be to pick as many as possible on the replacements bench.

To ensure the widest possible appeal, the teams should contain players from the second-tier rugby nations like Argentina, Fiji, and Italy.

With the match almost certain to be played at Telstra Stadium in Sydney – venue for the 2003 World Cup final, it would be difficult to go past George Gregan as Southern Hemisphere skipper.

Ireland's brilliant centre Brian O'Driscoll, who may lead the Lions team in New Zealand this winter, appeals as a likely captain of the Northern Hemisphere.

Brumbies captain Stirling Mortlock said today he would be delighted to take part, though he would be no certainty to get a game.

"A Southern Hemisphere team would have a very, very strong line-up and there are so many great players that could fill each of the positions," he said.

"To be selected in the team would be a huge honour."

He said he had no doubt players and sponsors would support the plan.

Here are two possible line-ups:

POSITION NORTH SOUTH

FULLBACK Gareth Thomas (Wal) Mils Muliaina (NZ)

WINGERS Jason Robinson (Eng) Rupeni Caucaunibuca (Fij)

Shane Williams (Wal) Doug Howlett (NZ)

CENTRES Brian O'Driscoll (Ire – c) Tana Umaga (NZ)

Gavin Henson (Wal) Matt Giteau (Aus)

FIVE-EIGHTH Jonny Wilkinson (Eng) Stephen Larkham (Aus)

HALF Jean-Baptiste Elissalde(Fra) George Gregan (Aus – c)

No.8 Martin Corry (Eng) Sione Lauaki (Ton)

FLANKERS Olivier Magne (Fra) George Smith (Aus)

Serge Betsen (Fra) Schalk Burger (Saf)

SECOND ROW Fabien Pelous (Fra) Victor Matfield (Saf)

Paul O'Connell (Ire) Chris Jack (NZ)

PROPS Julian White (Eng) Os du Randt (Saf)

Pieter de Villiers (Fra) Kees Meeuws (NZ)

HOOKER Fabio Ongaro (Ita) Keven Mealamu (NZ)

REPLACEMENTS:

NORTH: Steve Thompson (Eng), Reggie Corrigan (Ire), Nathan Hines (Sco), Colin Charvis (Wal), Stephen Jones (Wal), Chris Cusiter (Sco), Clement Poitrenaud (Fra).

SOUTH: Jeremy Paul (Aus), Omar Hasan (Arg), Bakkies Botha (Saf), Richie McCaw (NZ), Agustin Pichot (Arg), Dan Carter (NZ), Lote Tuiqiri (Aus).

OZBASH,

I see the damage Larkham and Smith have inflicted on you and your loved ones has affected your thinking. They would be the first players selected in a WORLD 15 let alone a SH 15. Get over the hurt son, greatness cannot be denied.....Oh I forgot, U are a mungo first and NZEDER second & Rugger fan last.  :p :p

rugbug, i do admit that said larkham and smiff have caused considerable heartache this side of the creek but they are both past their collective useby dates and are destined for a commentators job somewhere in sydney.

i just hope i get to see the 2 hasbeens this year when the mighty chiefs destroy them ( again) in sunny hamilton.

aussie only real union legend ( the mighty ealsey  ) would be useful in the sth hemisphere squad just for his goalpost leaping abilities :D

It won't happen. THe risk of injuries is too high. And apparently there is a League vs Union match being organised, which won't happen either.

Would be a waste of time, everyone seems to be over fundrasiing for the tsunami.

OZBASH,

I just had a beautiful dream...with 10 secs left on the clock at Telstra and NZ ahead by 1, Smith steals a turnover and Greegs passes to Larkham and he ghosts over in vintage style for the winning try...Murray Mexted is in the box at the time and laments that these greats of the game are still in their PRIME...GOLD, GOLD. GOLD...it doesn't get any better than this.........      2005 and loving it.

Test stars come out for charity clash

Friday, February 4, 2005

It's all falling into place for Southern Hemisphere coach Rod Macqueen.

Following the lead of Australian captain George Gregan and Springbok counterpart John Smit, All Blacks skipper Tana Umaga and Wallabies deputy Phil Waugh yesterday jumped on board for next month's IRB Rugby Aid clash.

And high-profile winger Wendell Sailor also wants in as each Super 12 outfit came to the party by agreeing to release a single player for the March 5 tsunami relief charity match at Twickenham.

After the rockiest of starts to his plans of fielding the strongest possible side for the North-South world contest, a persuasive Macqueen is close to gaining his wish.

The former Wallabies coach received little support when the match was controversially scheduled during the second round of the Super 12 but has talked the New Zealand Rugby Union and NSW and Queensland into stunning backflips.

"It looks like we're going to have a top player from every province and that's a win for rugby," Macqueen said yesterday.

"It's important to the status of this match and of the code that we have a top-quality side.

"If you look beyond the initial issues that we've had it's come together very well and that's a credit to the (national and Super 12) CEOs."

The 1999 World Cup-winning coach, likely to announce a 22-man squad next week, admitted Gregan's decision on Tuesday to sign-on out of the blue had been crucial to his process.

Gregan converted a potentially third-string outfit into virtually the best available by missing a Brumbies home game against the Pretoria-based Bulls to play.

"It was a very good move of George to come out very early on but the other guys are their own men as well," Macqueen said.

Macqueen has consulted with Tri Nations coaches Eddie Jones (Australia), Graham Henry (New Zealand) and Jake White (South Africa) as well as the Super 12 unions about his preferred team.

He has also factored in leading Islanders, such as Rupeni Caucaunibuca, and Argentinians who would likely command front-row places.

Macqueen's main obstacle has been Queensland who are totally opposed to releasing preferred option Chris Latham but satisfied with allowing crowd-pleaser Sailor to miss the Reds' March 4 clash with the Blues in Auckland.

Sailor, one of four quality players vying for the Reds' two wing spots, is extremely keen to play on the sort of stage he left rugby league to enjoy.

"A lot of rugby players would dream to play in that game," he said.

"But Latho is so important to our team it's probably better if I go.

"We've got a wealth of riches on the wing that Queensland hasn't had over the last couple of years and it's only for one game.

"I just hope that Drew (Mitchell) or (Peter) Hynes don't score three tries while I'm away because I've missed a game before and spent the rest of the year on the bench after it," he joked in reference to Clyde Rathbone's three-try effort as a late Test call-up last year.

With versatile All Blacks flyer Doug Howlett expected to be released by the Blues, the Reds have some grounds to dig their heels in as Howlett can play at fullback instead of Latham.

NSW, boasting a surplus of back-rowers, made the decision to release Waugh from the Waratahs clash against the Sharks in Durban after Macqueen had pin-pointed the openside flanker for the clash.

"It's a real honour to be playing a part in this match," said Waugh.

"It's a great cause and I had no hesitation in saying yes when asked."

NSW chief executive Fraser Neill said: "To release players like Phil Waugh on our part and Tana Umaga from the Hurricanes shows great compassion and unselfishness considering the high pressure nature of the Super 12 competition."

Following Umaga's announcement, the NZRU have revealed All Blacks, believed to include Andrew Mehrtens, would be released to take part this week.

Southern Hemisphere officials, concerned by a lack of announcements from north of the equator, hope the support is reciprocated with Six Nations stars named as part of Clive Woodward's outfit.

I can't believe the Reds aren't letting Latham play.
Macqueen should say no to Wendell Sailor. He should be nowhere near any decent Southern Hemisphere side.

These things are great at letting young fans know that helping the extremely needy is a good thing.. I hope they focus on the charity side and less on the battle between north and south.

Latham plays in tsunami game
February 4, 2005

WALLABY fullback Chris Latham is the latest addition to the Southern Hemisphere side for next month's tsunami aid match at Twickenham.

Latham has been released by the Queensland Reds for the March 5 game with the Northern Hemisphere.

Australian captain George Gregan and Springbok counterpart John Smit, All Blacks skipper Tana Umaga and Wallabies deputy Phil Waugh are also part of Southern Hemisphere coach Rod Macqueen's lineup.

Wonder who else will fill up the rest of the SH?

The timing of the game is a joke. It is suited to the Northern Hemisphere schedule 100%. Players should not have to take time out from a Super 12 match, for some this could prove costly for the rest of the season.

I think whoever has organised this has stuffed up big time.

The Southern Hemisphere team has been announced.

Gregan leads charity team
February 17, 2005

GEORGE Gregan and Brian O'Driscoll have been named captains for next month's Twickenham tsunami aid match between the southern and northern hemispheres.

Australian skipper Gregan heads a strong southern team which was named overnight, including three Wallabies, four Springboks and four All Blacks.

The team: Chris Latham (Aust), Rupeni Cacaunibuca (Fiji), Jaque Fourie (SA), Tana Umaga (vice-capt, NZ), Sereli Bobo (Fiji), Andrew Mehrtens (NZ), George Gregan (capt, Aust), Jerome Kaino (NZ), Phil Waugh (Aust), Schalk Burger (SA), Ifereimi Rawaqa (Fiji), Victor Matfield (SA), Carl Hoeft (NZ), John Smit (vice-capt, SA), Omar Hasan (Arg).

Coach Rod Macqueen will name his reserves later this week as he waits on the availability of some Samoan and Tongan players for the March 5 match.

Gregan got the nod ahead of All Blacks captain Tana Umaga and Springbok skipper John Smit.

"We are fortunate to have many leaders in the team and the players are very enthusiastic about the match," Macqueen said in a statement.

"We have assembled the best possible team to represent the south in what is sure to be an historic and entertaining match.

"We would like to thank the unions and also CEOs and coaches of the clubs and provinces who have released their players.

"They have recognised the magnitude of this cause and put the tsunami match ahead of their own competitions, for which they should be congratulated."

Gregan is joined in the team by Wallaby teammates Phil Waugh and Chris Latham, while Andrew Mehrtens, Carl Hoeft and exciting prospect Jerome Kaino complete the New Zealand contingent.

Last year's International Player of the Year, Springbok backrower Schalk Burger, Jaque Fourie and Victor Matfield are South Africa's representatives.

Fiji's flying wingers, Rupeni Caucaunibuca and Sereli Bobo, will give the northern defence plenty of problems and are joined by national teammate Ifereimi Rawaqa, while prop Omar Hasan is Argentina's sole contribution to the team.

Northern hemisphere coach Clive Woodward gave a hint on his plans for the British and Irish Lions tour to New Zealand later this year when he appointed O'Driscoll.

He will be joined in the northern hemisphere team by fellow Irishmen David Humphries, Paul O'Connell and Malcolm O'Kelly.

Chris Cusiter, Simon Taylor and Gordon Bulloch from Scotland have already been named in the north team.

"We have a fantastic group of players that are being invited to play and I am looking forward to choosing the starting XV," said Woodward.

"It is important to get a top quality team to sell out this fixture.

"Well done to Rod Macqueen on those players that he has named to participate in what will be a wonderful occasion for a great cause."

The proceeds from the match will go to the United Nations' World Food Program (WFP) to support its vital work in the long-term rebuilding of the Indian Ocean region devastated by the Boxing Day tsunami.
