Norths-Souths arrangement?

Seems there's been a bit of fallout between North Sydney and Melbourne, and they're coming to an arrangement with South Sydney.

Norths 'a pub team'
By Steve Mascord
July 10, 2006

MELBOURNE chief executive Brian Waldron has slammed North Sydney as a "pub team" more interested in getting on the drink than playing football.

Waldron made the comments last night in response to the Bears' decision to end their feeder team relationship with the Storm in favour of a joint venture with South Sydney.
The Melbourne boss claims they dumped Norths - not the other way around.
"We pulled our players out of there two weeks ago because we were concerned about the level of professionalism in the place," he said.
"The feedback we were getting from our players was that they weren't much more than a pub team, that their players couldn't wait to get the game over with before going for a drink."
North Sydney chief executive Greg Florimo said: "Hearing those comments second hand is quite disappointing. I know it isn't true."
Florimo said the club would get more fulltimers from Souths than from the Storm.

"Melbourne also have a feeder team deal with Brisbane Norths and we have only been getting two, three, four players each weekend," said Florimo. "We need more than that if we are to compete."

This is from the North Sydney website.

MESSAGE FROM THE CEO
10 July 2006

In response to an article in this morning's (Monday July 10) Daily Telegraph, I would like to assure all of North Sydney members, supporters and sponsors that comments made by Melbourne Storm CEO Brian Waldron were totally unfounded, untrue and unacceptable. While we are not the organisation we once were, to imply that we are a 'pub team' is insulting to all involved in this proud club. We maintain levels of professionalism and integrity that are synonymous with North Sydney, and both players and staff give 100% in all that they do. Unfortunately for Mr Waldron, his head coach Craig Bellamy, who states that he was more than happy with the feeder arrangement, does not share his perception of our organisation. It is disappointing that the Daily Telegraph found these comments compelling enough to warrant a news story, however I am secure in the knowledge that our operations are of the highest standard and it is sad that the 18 months that we were with Melbourne Storm has ended on such a sour note.

Norths are better off without them, I can't imagine the distance geographically between the two being a great advantage anyway when it comes to the day to day running of the club. Bit rich for the Storm (all of 5 minutes old) referring to the mighty bears like that. I say good riddance. Any team owned by New Ltd cannot be relied upon for loyalty. The Souths deal would be the way to go, benefitting both Souths and Norths.

A deal with Souths will be much better for the Bears. Norths were only getting 2 or 3 player each week from the Storm but with Souths they will probably be getting 10+.

Who is Newtown to talk, they went with the Roosters. It was a financial decision. Maybe clubs would not be driven to this if PL was given more support.

There are less traditional teams because "traditional" NRL teams (Souths) are outsourcing PL clubs. That's the link.

See you at Bear Park tomorrow?

Souths should merge with Norths and relocate to the central coast. If souths don't want to merge then they should be relocated to western australia.

Kinda like the New Zealand warriors deal when we made the eight in year 2000 in our first year in Prem/league, only to be beaten by a penrith side that knew in advance they had to beat Cronulla by 30 something plus to overtake us, yet still did it no thanks to a dismal Cronulla effort knowing they were already in the eight in advance. Then coming from eighth spot to Penriths credit they made the grand final in 2000 only to go down to Canterbury Berries, of which both sides we convincingly beat during that same season.

Then dumped by New Zealand when they advertised money issues, yet gave us no players all season anyway just took.

Hoipe it works Bears. But then I rememver when Souths so called backed the jets. Already owing them 300,000 DOLLARS THEY SO GENEROUSLY LET US USE THEIR REDFERN OVAL TO PART PAY OF THE DEBT, ( THE SAME OVAL THEY WOULD NOT EVEN LET THEIR OWN PLAYERS PLAY ON ). Then said they would back us for the season in order to pay off the debt. They rang us TWO fricken weeks prior to season kickoff to say they had changed their minds, and were instead putting in a South Juniors side in the Jim beam Cup. Then rang up our good players at that time ( like club captain Garth WOOD ) offering them more money to play for them, and raped us 2 weeks prior to kickoff.

Understand you have to do something else though. Love NORTHS and hope they have found a conscious since then for your own sakes. ( By the way how is ex-Jet David FAALOGO going for Souths anyway fricken thieves ).......................

Newtown in 2000 were in the same boat as Norths were with Melbounre this year and last year yet Newtown were much more competitive. I think it says a lot about the respective PL clubs.

Norths will be better off in 2007 with Souths than they have been in 2006 with Melbourne. I just wonder what might have been. Melbourne are in talks with the Rip about being an exclusive feeder club in PL, Flegg, Ball and Matthews - something that Norths won't have with Souths but mayeb something they could have had with Melbourne had they played their cards better. It's all academic now. Norths will have a better PL team next year giving them resources to build their other teams. Best of luck Bears.
